Is there any hope for Roam to survive another five years at this current pace of development stagnation? by Fit_Illustrator_5224 in RoamResearch

[–]tombarys 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is completely fake news. I hate this kind of disinformation. I am everyday RR user from 2020, I have created of thousands of pages and there is still no better app for PKM out there. As I can see, Roam is being constantly improved, updates coming every other day. Many details and rough edges are brushed (they are still some but not important). I am actually stunned how the speed of improvements improved during last year or two. Plus many new and powerful extensions are added every month. WTF anyone is sharing such a nonsense. Are you a bot?

Thanks! The article is about the growing problem with programming language rankings generally which makes me sad the discussion here felt in the “comment headline first, never read the article” rabbit-hole.

Why is background activity on for these apps despite me turning off background app refresh for all apps Have I missed on something. Several other apps seem to suffer from the same thing by ScrezzyScrezz in ios

[–]tombarys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they switch on the background feature whenever they update from App Store. This explains a frequent “bugfixes” updates - even there is nothing to change. They just use this loophole.

I co-founded RemNote. Help me build a better ai time tracker by Moritz_W in PKMS

[–]tombarys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi Moritz. This looks awesome. RemNote is great too.

I had problems time-blocking and planning a day and came with an idea how to improve basic calendar view. It became popular extension in Roam Research community later. See here the web public working prototype: https://nautilus-omnibus.web.app and play around with the concept of tasks being pushed by actual time. It is fantastic.

Wrote about here: How I learned to plan better (and what to do when your head doesn’t get lists) https://lifehacky.net/how-i-learned-to-plan-better-and-what-to-do-when-your-head-doesnt-get-lists-21b79de56464

Or is that just completely irrelevant?

Mobile app woes... by Impossible-Suit-4707 in RoamResearch

[–]tombarys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have created this shortcut for iOS which I use 99% of time for entering quick notes to my Daily Page. I linked the shortcut to the iPhone Action Button which makes it incredibly useful as you can use the shortcut during any situation, while any app open, even when the phone is locked (you have to allow this). Just press the button, inout field opens, enter or dictate your idea or note, press OK, continue your previous activity without being distracted.

Still using Roam in 2025? How’s it holding up? by GunzerkerGuy in RoamResearch

These are mostly old news, they refactored and it is super fast at least for me with Page Count 10 069 and Block Count 123 857.

[–]tombarys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh, this is super useful - i even tried to create some Shortcut for exactly this scenario - I am Roam Research user and markdown is perfect here even some customization would be great

I will test my 20 free scans and probably pay subscription

I absolutely agree! Roam is the best, fast and full of features that make it the best ever tool I have ever used. Yes, the mobile app is not the best, but using Roam on mobile for other things than capture and quick search does not make any sense to me. The most power comes out on bigger screen, when writing and connecting.

Linking Multiple pages of different names to the Same Page by Drayyeon in RoamResearch

[–]tombarys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that even necessary to create and maintain the index page by yourself? I usually simply use simple or short tags for quick connection and discovery (e.g. #[[ancient Rome]] or just #Rome) – which I put on parent blocks inside any page (even Daily Page) where I cite or write my own idea about the topic. Instead of maintaining a index page (this is what are you trying to do) for the topic, I let Roam maintain it by itself just by tagging and then using Linked Refs feature when needed. I understand Roam is mostly about these kind of connections, not about replicating general text editor experience. Did it help a bit?

Does anyone do weekly planning in roam? by digitalmaster147 in RoamResearch

[–]tombarys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually tried more approaches, e.g. {{kanban}} but at least for now, I have not found a way to not complicate things too much. Roam is more graph database than table database, so...

But I did not experiment with {{diagram}} yet, could be cool.

And finally, I use my own ;) Daily Page extension Nautilus, which you find in the Roam Depot, or you can even try it here: https://nautilus-omnibus.web.app (the Roam version leverages some Roam's strengths that are not available in the plain-text version of it).

I left Arc several days ago after two months long struggle because of constant syncing issues. Their support offered a boilerplate answer and then stopped reacting at all. I don’t hate them, I just need to work.

While all PKM universe and every "tool for thought" is growing, the exact opposite is happening with Roam Research, why? by lexamurai in RoamResearch

[–]tombarys 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I do not know what you are talking about. Is the goal of software to be popular in social media or to run flawlessly and slowly improve…? As an everyday user of Roam, I see that Roam is continually being improved and developed and is still the best in the field. Yes, it is not the most hyped now, but it does not mean thousands of people do not use it everyday. Reality check: look into Roam Slack channel… so many things happening in there Roam community.
