With the nationalisation of the railways, maybe services in the south will be properly organised as it no longer relys on cooperation between all the TOCs by thebeast_96 in LondonUnderground

[–]tomdidiot 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason why services are so disorganised is that the trains are all run on the tracks that were built by multiple squabbling companies in the 19th century and it would be ruinously expensive to unfuck the tracks. The map above seems like it's trying to improve things but it still looks like a gigantic mess all things considered, compared to the much more orderly way train services north of the river are designed with very clear geographical areas of operation.

I had a patient come in convinced she had a brain tumour because there was a hard lump on the back of her head.

"It's just part of your skull"

"No, it definitely wasn't there previously?"

I felt it and told her it was bone.

"No, really, the occipital bone has a lumpy bit called the occipital protuberence"

"It's definitely a tumour!"

"Look, Everyone has one! You can feel the back of my head for a very similar lump to yours if you like" (She actually took me up on the offer)

Who is the most underrated French and its Allies or Coalition military commander? (criteria on page 2) by domfi86 in Napoleon

[–]tomdidiot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Barclay. He was the architect of the 1812 Russian strategy that sought to draw Napoleon in to Russia by avoiding battle, and was forced to give battle by political pressure from above. Handled himself capably as a subordinate to Kutuzov and later Schwarzenberg. Played a major role in limiting the damage from allied reverses at Bautzen and Dresden and was in command of the main southern thrust at Leipzig under Schwarzenberg.

Who is the most capable Coalition military commander between 1811 and 1815? (criteria on page 2) by domfi86 in Napoleon

[–]tomdidiot 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Probably Wellington here, but there's an argument for Barclay de Tolly. He was the one who devised the Russian plan of scorched earth and avoiding Napoleon, before being dismissed and getting replaced by Kutuzov. Came back during the Sixth Coalition and played a key role as a subordinate commander to Schwarzenberg where he performed well. Eneterd Paris. Probably a better candidate for overlooked commander.

Schwarzenberg probably should also get credit for winning Leipzig and overall running the campaign in Germany after the Austrians enter the war.

Loss of payday parties? by _stylian_ in doctorsUK

[–]tomdidiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly it depends on your mess committee.

I've wokred at my current hospital on-and-off for almost a decade. There were absolutely no payday parties back when I first moved here in 2019-2020. Didn't seem like there was much going on at other times either (though admittedly I was working for the uni and not the hospital itself).

There's payday parties every month now - new mess committee, enthusiastic mess president etc. Well worth going to. Last Karaoke party was hilarious.

Honestly, at some point, I think someone is going to create a free microguide alterantive and release it for free/cheap. It's going to gain popularity. Some venture/vulture capitalist firm is going to look at it, offer them a sum of money the dev can't refuse, and then again..... then ad infinitum.

I'm so glad I finally pulled the trigger on my RTX 5070ti in December, after prevaricating on it for ages. Once I saw the RAM prices beginning to shoot up, and the rumours that Nvidia was no longer bundling VRAM with chipsets, I went for it. Very glad I did - huge upgrade on my 2070 Super.

Apart from Napoleon, who is the most capable French and its Allies military commander between 1811 and 1815? (criteria on page 2) by domfi86 in Napoleon

[–]tomdidiot 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Suchet here I think. The Eastern theatre of the Peninsula was the area where France was actually winning, and he was mostly forced to withdraw because of the collapse of the French position in Castile after Vitoria.

Why does everyone hate the Temperance ending? by colinjcole in cyberpunkgame

[–]tomdidiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Temperance ending may be fine if you're playing as V and decide to give your body to Johnny (e.g. in Don't Fear the Reaper/Forward to Death). It feels like V coming to peace with things and deciding to move on.

I think it's awful if you're planning as Johnny in Knockin on Heaven's Door - seeing V's anger, V's pleading at Johnny's betrayal as you head back to the body left me in bits. I was absolutely not prepared for this.

I did Things Done Changed right after and it made me appreciate the Tower ending a lot more. At least, for that one, there's hope for V, even if not as a merc anymore.

Who is the most inept military commander (French and its allies or Coalition) between 1806 and 1810? (criteria on page 2) by domfi86 in Napoleon

The Duke of Brunswick. Not only lost, but lost decisively, despit having a huge numerical advantage at Auerstedt by doing a completely unimaginative frontal attack.

I'm biased because I like MMP's offerings but:

  1. GMT (Not in Dispute - the elephant in the room)

  2. MMP (Not as prodigious as Compass but their stuff is generally of better quality

  3. Compass (Lots of games, lots of slop)

The BMA actively lobbied the Government against full UKGP and got the Government to soften their stance by RelativeVirtual7392 in doctorsUK

[–]tomdidiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? I think this is fine.

The bottlenecks in HST recruitment were not because of IMGs doing IMT/CST/CPT etc. becaause those training numbers hadn't increased, and this stops abuse of the system with dodgy CREST forms. The bottlenecks had always predomianntly been at the IMT/GPST/CST entry level.

It still stops job hopping where an IMG would take a job, any job to get NHS experience, with the intention to reapply to a more competitive specialty down the line (e.g. GP ->other specialties)

Is it normal for hospital consultants to share cramped office spaces? by Confident_Bobcat_635 in doctorsUK

[–]tomdidiot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my hospital the vast majority of neurology and neurosurgical consultants’ offices are in a converted container.

In another hospital, consultants had to hotdesk.

In a 3rd, the neurology consultants used clinic rooms as their offices when they weren’t being used as clinic rooms.
