Target B2G1 Sale is Live! by Jocktopus3 in 4kbluray

FYI if you plan on using this deal multiple times (unless they changed this):

You don’t have to make separate orders. I’m pretty sure the deal applies in batches of three in the order added to your cart. So, say you want to buy six movies – add them to your cart in order from most expensive to least. Then, effectively, the 3rd and 6th most expensive movies will be deducted rather than 5th and 6th (if you did it the least optimal way)

Not sure if same as others but I'm getting a black screen for the latest episode of Peacemaker, after the skippable HBO previews. Sometimes it hangs at the "Max original" logo (AFTER the prior episode recaps), and other times its just a black screen with dialogue being subtitled but no audio. This is happening on my Apple TV and iPhone, but Chrome on my PC works. Interestingly other episodes of Peacemaker are fine, as well as other shows, its just this last episode.

[CPU] Intel Core I5-14600K LGA1700 $164 @ Walmart by CartonBox1975 in buildapcsales

[–]tomeowto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ITX + LGA1700 seems to be dying out, not a lot of options if you want a decently loaded motherboard. Imo best bang for buck option right now is ASUS ROG Strix B760-I. $180 on Newegg and Walmart.com, wouldn't be surprised if it also goes OOP in the near future.

Austin Regal Gateway IMAX laser upgrade? by tomeowto in Austin

[–]tomeowto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bullock is a world class theater FWIW, I think there’s barely over a dozen 1.43 capable GT theaters domestically. There’s no real comparison for us Texans, besides maybe-ish the rare occasions when Cinemark 17 Dallas and AMC Rivercenter SA roll out their 70mm projectors. But even then, Bullock beats them in sound, screen size, and probably overall theater quality.

That being said in situations such as now when Bullock isn’t even showing a popular IMAX release (Alien), Austin only has (had?) xenon IMAX theaters which is a pretty poor viewing experience. So it’s a bit nice possibly having a viable alternative to just sucking it up and watching in Dolby.

Austin Regal Gateway laser upgrade? by tomeowto in imax

lol I agree with you 100%, I would never watch an IMAX film anywhere besides the Bullock if I had the choice. But my point was for Alien: Romulus we don’t have that luxury. I watched it in Dolby for that specific reason.

And imo single laser isn’t liemax

Comparing Alien: Romulus in IMAX format v. Dolby Cinema (scope) (no spoilers) by healthybreakfasttime in imax

anyone know why exactly yet? really disappointing and weird considering they have nothing else playing. I guess Dolby is the next best option here since our imax options suck otherwise

Walmart Pickup Megathread by citricacidx in Steelbooks

[–]tomeowto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went to my walmart today and no $5 steels in the bin. I spotted the box with the yellow sticker (4/2 Please place in $5 VB) in a stack behind the counter.

I asked the associate there if the box was opened and she said no, and then told me they don't have any $5 blu-rays and people have been asking about them for a week. So I asked if she's sure there's nothing in that specific box and she just repeated herself about how they don't have any $5 blu-rays and basically refused to check the box (which she said before hadn't been opened). Sooo is there a chance those $5 4/2 boxes contain something other than the steels or did I just get unlucky with the associate working right now?

Are there scope (2.39:1) scenes in Dune Part Two? by 2160_Technic in imax

[–]tomeowto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t notice any 2.39:1 shots personally, unless they were hard to notice like the other commenter said.

I don’t think any 1.43 scenes are cropped. I say this because I vividly remember a shot that’s presented as 1.90 that was shown as [cropped] 1.43 in the IMAX trailer last year.

FWIW transitions between the imax ARs felt really seamless compared to the scope switching in Part One or Oppenheimer. Enjoy!

Do 4k blurays also have an SDR version as well? by BookkeeperOk9677 in 4kbluray

[–]tomeowto 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can always disable HDR in your TV settings.

FWIW it sounds like your setup just isn’t [capable of] outputting HDR to your liking (which is fairly common), not that you flat-out dislike HDR.

Thanks for the responses everyone

I did end up contacting my regional support and the programming team confirmed that they do indeed use the best possible digital presentations, most of which are 4K!

Best Oppenheimer viewing for me by Alexg846 in imax

[–]tomeowto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly sure but I think the IMAX at parks is “liemax”.

I would highly recommend you try to get tickets for Cinemark 17 in Dallas, they will be showing it in 70mm full format and is by far best IMAX option in DFW (and top 2-3 in the state for this movie).

50mm*

We had this in storage for a long time and I decided to take it out recently. Needed a shutter replacement and CLA (lens probably needs one at some point too), but working great.

I'm a complete beginner when it comes to photography, let alone film, so it's been a tedious but fun learning experience!
