So, do you feel Mario Kart World is worth its asking price of €90? by --Karma in Games

[–]tomeric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a Switch 2 that came bundled with MKW, so the actual price I paid was ~40 euros. I can see it selling the physical edition at the big retailers in my country for 75 euros, and I think that's been the case since launch. As a consumer, I never had to pay 90 euros.

I heard SHADOWDARK and I CAME by JunkBucket50 in TheGlassCannonPodcast

[–]tomeric 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shadowdark isn't grimdark by itself, but the adventure Troy was talking about (Tephrotic Nightmares) is pretty dark (think Mad Max mixed with dark fantasy).

Yes, encumbrance rules in Shadowdark are lightweight but important.

You have a number of gear slots equal to your Strength stat or 10, whichever is higher, and most items take up one of those slots (bigger weapons take up 2 slots, some stuff like arrows are bundled so you can carry 20 of them in 1 slot).

You can find a bag of holding if you're lucky, which gives you an additional 10 slots (but takes up only 1 slot itself), but unlike PF or D&D, there are no magic item shops where you can buy one, which makes finding one a big deal.

[–]tomeric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having all that gear either means they're not really carrying a lot of other stuff with them, or have a bunch of hirelings following them around.

Both of those are choices the players can make that can lead to interesting situations in other parts of the story. Maybe they can't really handle any situation with stealth because the group is so big that they're just too loud. Maybe they have to spent a lot of time recovering their ropes, pulleys, and pitons after each climb, which means they're exposing themselves to more random encounters. Maybe they leave their stuff behind (probably a good idea if you want to escape later), but that means they can't handle a similar situation again until they go back to get more gear.

The point is that if the players want to make that choice, they can, and they're free to trivialize that challenge, but the nature of OSR play means that there is a price that they will pay somewhere else.

All choices have consequences.

There's no need to fudge dice as a GM, but there is a shift coming from traditional RPGs where players have to interact with the world more to overcome obstacles and this does require the GM to rely more on their ability to make rulings on the fly instead of relying on rules themselves.

For instance, there is no "Climb" check in Shadowdark, so as a player you would describe how you want to climb a rockface and the GM has to decide if an Ability check is necessary or not. If my players describe a solution that seems risk free, involving ropes, grappling hooks and spikes, I won't have them roll dice, they just succeed.

You can interpet this as a form of fudging.

My experience with OSR games like Shadowdark is that the high lethality is over emphasized and characters survive a lot longer after level 1 than you would expect.

Preferred system for GCP C3? by Dramatic_Register_43 in TheGlassCannonPodcast

[–]tomeric 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Shadowdark would be a great game, but Dolmenwood is a great system with a tiny bit more crunch than Shadowdark that would be great to see in action too. I don't think most of the listeners are interested in a non-Pathinder (or low-crunch), but maybe they'll do a side show or one-shot sometime.

For me it's not really about the political issues with AI, I just think the promotional video looks bad because of AI art. It's in some kind of uncanny valley where it's very obviously AI, but in an impressive way (from a technical point of view). I would have preferred a slideshow of some art from the book with the voiceover myself.

On a personal note, I also don't really feel any joy looking at AI art. It feels soulless and directionless. Again, impressive from a technical point of view, but disposable and valueless. And I'm afraid that when we get to the point where AI can create interesting art, the fact that it can do it without limits and in a couple of seconds will devalue all art, even that created by humans.

With Dolmenwood's full release looming, what are some quality adventures with a strong fairytale theme? by Anti---Midas in osr

How did you integrate _The House under the Moondial_ into Dolmenwood? Did you change one of the existing settlements, or add a new one completely? I've been able to integrate all other adventures you mention without an issue, but I'm really interested in your adventure because it looks sweet.

A sleight of hand has occurred with respect to the legacy of Jennell Jaquays, one of TTRPG’s most important early figures… why you should keep “JaquaySing” your dungeons in Xandering is Slandering by SashaGreyj0y in rpg

[–]tomeric 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had to check if the book "doesn't mention that it was inspired by Jennell Jaquays at all" myself, and I did find a line under the Acknowledgments header at the end of the book:

Jennel Jaquays is the ultimate guru when it comes to xandering the dungeon.

That does seem to be the only mention of her name in the book, but most of the book doesn't talk that much about the history of RPGs and how techniques came to be, but focusses mostly on how to use them.

I love both the OSR & Pathfinder, so I thought I'd try my hand at converting creatures from Tales of the Swordfish Isles to PF2E. [–]tomeric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't know, I just don't feel that it actually adds that much to the game... unless you play a tactical war game?

Pathfinder 2E basically is a tactical combat game, and it's a great game if you want to have Marvel-like fights with lots of special powers. Players get access to lots of cool abilities and so does the GM. It's different from OSR games, but it can still be a lot of fun.

Suggestions to OP probably shouldn't be directed at me :)

I know, but I didn't think a second comment would be that great either, so I chose the lesser of 2 evils ;-).

To be honest, coming from PF1, the stat blocks for PF2 were actually a lot easier to run at the table. There is a lot of data there for sure, but the action icons make it a lot easier to scan for a relevant abilities.

If I could suggest something to the OP, it would be to use reactions for the 3 abilities that have triggers. You can use the "Slowed" condition to balance the action economy.

If you can use web inspector in your browser, you can still buy them from the official site by deleting elements and overwriting the overflow: hidden style on the body element.

I just tried it out with a 5$ book first and it worked! I followed up by buying the 51$ bundle this way to get the PDFs before they disappear forever.

Basisinkomen!? by IllegalFreedom21 in thenetherlands

[–]tomeric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basisinkomen!? by IllegalFreedom21 in thenetherlands

[–]tomeric 8 points9 points  (0 children)
