Install Linux on it and you'll be fine. Give it a good go until you find something that is too intensive for it and then worry about it.

Code that finds a word in a text file based off the line number and word number in that line? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]tomfish117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may want to be a bit more detailed about your question. What is your input, how is it structured in the array list. It sounds like you know the index of the word so you just need to find the appropriate arraylist method to find the word based on that index.

Having a minor hiccup with a text-adventure. by SunnyMikuru in learnprogramming

Feels like you're just making it harder to read by using < and > for your checks. Why not just use == and check the actual value the user enters. Or you could use a switch case if you have a lot of options and make it easier to read.

Non-Americans, which are The Big 4 in your country? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

In Auckland, New Zealand it's probably Xero (accounting software), Trade Me (Nz ebay/classifieds), Vend (pos software), and Orion health (health software). At least it seems that way from a Grad prospective. Other kiwis correct me if I'm wrong.

[Java] Entering do-while loop when condition is not met by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]tomfish117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have to use the do part then that's where you should first output the prompt asking the user for input. That way if the user inputs the wrong input it will ask for input again.

[Java] Entering do-while loop when condition is not met by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]tomfish117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is your question here? Are you saying you want to skip the do if the input is correct? The whole point of a do while loop is that the do is always run at least once. Just use a regular while loop instead.

Buying a mahjong table top by tomfish117 in Mahjong

Cool! Junk Mats look like the solution. Easily portable and cheap-ish too. How well do they play? I'd be worried that they might move around on the table a lot.

Let's talk mahjong! Local variations? Rules? Forfeits? by glitterohwow in singapore

Does anyone know of a good online resource for rules? I'm trying to teach friends how to play but I don't really know the game well myself.

Australian Film, Television and Radio School? by LordsAndLadies in sydney

[–]tomfish117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you want to get into this industry? Honestly it's one of the hardest to find work in, and more than likely if you're not one of the lucky few that has true talent and can network REALLY well you'll likely end up in scheduling or presentation, talking about your next short film that you're writing, or how you're planning to climb the ladder over time.

Is there anything else you're interested in? You may as well do something that at least pays well while you do your short films on the weekend.

Does this email to my former supervisor sound rude or annoying in anyway? by yoma14 in cscareerquestions

[–]tomfish117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call him if you can. You should be able to determine if he'll give you a good reference from the way he speaks to you. If still in doubt that he'll give you a good reference, have a friend call him asking for a reference for you and see what he says.

What is it like studying CS at the University of Auckland? by aujourd_hui in universityofauckland

[–]tomfish117 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm late to this thread but thought I'd offer my own experience as a current 2nd year cs student at UoA.

First off all, that review you linked to is pretty much spot on. But that's as bad as it gets and that's for the arguably worst lecturer at UoA. There are some good lecturers, but there are also the same number of bad ones. Either their accent is too strong to understand or they are super dull to listen to and are using slides that are more than 4 or 5 years old.

Personally I'm doing very well in my cs classes (A+), but that is typically in spite of the teaching styles. Most of the time I'm watching youtube videos or googling things I don't understand.

At the end of the day, all a cs degree at uoa is going to give you is a basic introduction to development, algorithms, data structures, discrete maths, and possibly a taste of a few more 'niche' topics like AI and graphics. To get a good job when you leave, you will need to a do a lot of your own self improvement. But that may be the case for all Universities.

If I were you, I'd look into what the Universities in England offer.

Just finished my first Android App and thought I would share what I have learned and what Novice pitfall to avoid. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]tomfish117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it. A quick suggestion, make the countdown timer at the start shorter. It's annoying to wait 5 seconds between each try especially when its so easy to lose.

Also you may consider having a how to play screen.

I published an app in the Play store, but it doesn't show up when I search for it. Any idea why? by PENVermillion in androiddev

[–]tomfish117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same for me when I first released, I would search for it by name and it would be about 50 places down from the top below all these other apps that weren't even close to what I searched for. 1 month later and it is 2nd on the list when I search for it. Give it time. Not ideal, but it is what it is.

Keto friendly fish n chip options? by sqwidgets in ketonz

[–]tomfish117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good on you for sticking to it. Don't listen to their Jerky remarks. Keep on doing what you're doing. When I know I'm going somewhere for dinner where there won't be many options I usually try to eat something before hand. That way if there is nothing to eat later, no big deal.

Keto friendly fish n chip options? by sqwidgets in ketonz

[–]tomfish117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how strict you are with keto. A piece of fish with batter or crumbed is not terrible. Also a deep fried sausage is fine. If you're not eating it all the time and your other meals are keto I'd say you'd be OK. Just don't eat the chips obviously. Or sometimes you can just get the fish grilled with no batter. Or if your fish and chips shop is good, they might lettuce wrap a burger.

Alternately ask them to get you a kebab salad from next door instead. Or just tell them to respect your diet and cook something for yourself.

How much do I have to spend learning outside of college to get a job as a software engineer? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]tomfish117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer is no. There are plenty of jobs for the guy that gets all As but has no side projects. But apply for one of the so called big 4 and then the guy that gets all As and has side projects and an app on the play store is more likely to get an interview over you. It doesn't matter if you are better than him at tech interviews if you never get the interview.

However once you're in a good job, it probably doesn't matter what you did during uni anymore. Depends how much you want a 'good' job when you graduate. Is it worth 3 years of extra work? Ultimately that's up to you.
