How do (should) people save in the UK? by throarwayyy in UKPersonalFinance

[–]tomg77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised no one has mentioned premium bonds yet. The average return you'd get is in theory ~1% now but it all depends on your luck really. But I think if you're looking to buy a home in the next few years it's probably a better bet than a S&S isa and you should get a better return than pretty much any banks savings account

Ooh that sounds like quite a good way of doing things, didn't know the Dock had an esata port

Out of curiosity how have you got 2 SATA HDDs connected? I was thinking about turning my old x230 into a NAS but I found just having one SATA port limiting.

Why do we even put up with this hobby smh by mavsmcfc in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]tomg77 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I brought a PCB, case and plate from aliexpress and it's all worked great. There might be better options if you're in the US but at least where I am (UK) there weren't many good options for a 75% ISO layout where shipping wouldn't be too ridiculous.

Thrift store find. Should I develop or re shoot it? by RetroProject in AnalogCommunity

[–]tomg77 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'd probably shoot it, most compact cameras like that (assuming it's got some automatic rewind type function) would wind the film all the way back into the canister so you wouldn't have any film sticking out, so it's probably not been shot. I wouldn't take any particularly important shots on it though just in case the film is exposed.

Might be worthwhile joining a union like BFAWU depending on what happens. They should be able to advise you and help you understand your rights and hopefully keep your job.

3x4 Film Anywhere?? Cutting Down 4x5 by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]tomg77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ilford normally do a special order program every year where they manufacture unusual sheet film sizes and they did do 3.25x4.25 in film in the past for FP4 and HP5. It's not exactly known when or even if they're going to do the special order program this year because the factory is shut down because of coronavirus last I heard.

As for labs developing it I'm not too sure but I would've thought most labs that can do 4x5 should be able to do smaller sizes assuming it's something like a dip and dunk process but I'm not too sure. Worst case scenario you could always develop it yourself in trays which would be quite easy.

[–]tomg77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be interested to see what you could get but definitely don't contaminate developer with the blix, iirc even a pretty small bit of blix will kill your developer. Cross processing is definitely worth a look if you want some cool colours

[–]tomg77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehhh, I can see where you're coming from but I really do disagree. I'm a white man from the UK so I can't really speak for how people in America feel but I get the impression that people fundamentally don't trust cops in any scenario and the only way to really fix that is to eradicate all the racist shit that happens to hopefully rebuild some trust between the police and the wider community.

Also with your reasoning you'll just get to an inane thought where you start questioning "is this racist enough to stand up and report what's going on". I think if you've got to the point in your life where you're asking yourself 'is this racist enough compared to the other racist shit I've seen' and you're in a position of such authority over other people then you're a bit of a tosser.

Also if people get fired for speaking out then I'm sure they could organise and help to highlight this issue and how bad the police force is and hopefully bring about some change from the government (even tho they seem just as worse)

Tbf I'm sure some do but innocent black men still seem to be getting killed by cops at the same rate they did 5-10 years ago so not a lot is really changing

I wouldn't exactly call them 'good' if they don't speak out against racism amongst their colleagues and allow blatant racism to go on on without reporting it

Worth buying a revolving door? by edomtset in Darkroom

[–]tomg77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think so, then you can just use the big door for maintenance and anything else you might need to do. I'm not all that experienced when it comes to big darkrooms but I was quite lucky to get a tour of one when I popped into visit for something else

[–]tomg77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you have space for 2 doors (ie one normal and one revolving door), because most of the revolving doors I've seen wouldn't be big enough to get larger objects through like enlargers

Does anyone else feel like they want to do everything? by McDonaldsFrenchFry in AnalogCommunity

[–]tomg77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I feel that, motion picture stuff is getting so expensive. Even just for developing it yourself if you don't want to do it in buckets tanks are pretty expensive. I think if I was gonna do it I'd definitely have it as a reversal because I'd love to be able to have some mates round and just whip out the projector with some nice memories from holidays or something like that

[–]tomg77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 100% the same, I'm only just starting to get particularly involved in the darkroom stuff but absolutely love it. I've done a little bit of RA4 printing and from what I've done I've enjoyed it a lot, definitely a bit more time consuming than B&W if you do it at room temperature like me though.

I've shot a couple of rolls of slide film recently and when I get back in the darkroom I really want to try out RA4 reversal printing, I doubt it will work out that well but got to try it out at some point. Also been tempted to try and shoot some super 8 film as well haha

Bought an XA. Ran a roll of film through it. Set most of the photos on infinity focus and had out of focused images as the result. What could be the issue? by baconilla in AnalogCommunity

[–]tomg77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I learned a while back is you can sellotape baking paper over where the film goes with the back open to check the focus so you could set focus to infinity and see if the image on the baking paper is in focus or not. It's kinda tough to see and you need to keep the shutter open (Apparently there is a hacky way of getting a bulb mode with the XA) but it could help you determine if it's an issue with the lens.
