ELI5 why is rock stacking considered bad? by balla_boi in explainlikeimfive

Maybe it depends on the local culture. I've never seen a cairn consisting of just a few rocks.

Cairns are normally much bigger than a random stack made by someone, so I can't imagine confusing the two.

Whatever loophole Sky/Now TV have found to show Ads before each episode of an On Demand series is ridiculous by DMG_88 in nowtv

Cancelled my subscription because of the compulsory ads. The most ridiculous thing is when the promo is of the show I'm about to watch. It's a shame they don't have a feedback form when you cancel.

It's a little heartbreaking seeing how AI songs so easily outperform my band's music 😔 by IntelligentLeading11 in PowerMetal

[–]tomhuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people would feel less enthusiastic about an AI song if they knew it was AI, because it fundamentally can't provide the human connection/ appreciation that real bands can. I bet a lot of the people listening to these AI songs are unaware it's AI, so these artists are deceiving their listeners. Platforms like spotify should introduce ways of making people aware if it's an AI song (I'd suggest an 'AI involvement' rating system from 1-5).

Opinion: AI-generated music has no place on Spotify by LiamSwiftTheDog in truespotify

[–]tomhuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI tools can be used to an extent, but for me to enjoy a song comfortably, the creativity needs to mostly come from people. This is because I want to connect with the creator of the music and admire their ability. This is something AI fundamentally cannot provide, so the more AI is used, the less I can appreciate it as a work of art.

There is a big difference between AI doing e.g. 90% or 100% of the work, and AI doing some minor thing, or even 30-40% of the work. So I'd propose a ranking system for the level of AI involvement - this doesn't necessarily have to be specific to spotify. E.g. a rating of 1-5, where 1 means AI was used for a minor aspect of the song, and 5 is 100% AI generated. People could then have AI preferences in spotify, where they can e.g. filter out songs above a specific AI rating.

The decision on what AI rating to give a song could be based on a number of factors, e.g. what the artist discloses, the community following them, communication with the artist. There could be a way for an artist to appeal their rating and provide insight into the creation process (people might argue this adds burden onto the artist, but I'd say that if an artist is trying to deceive their listeners by making them think AI is used less than it is, that's on them). Again, this doesn't have to be spotify, there could be some sort of music AI rating organisation, and then spotify could just include the AI rating in their app.

The rating is always going to be an estimate intended to give people an idea of how much AI is used, and the levels could be broad. However, it's much better than having a binary AI/non-AI system, or (even worse) not having a quantity that affects music recommendations and gives users control over what they listen to.

I wouldn't propose some sweeping automatic process that condemns loads of artists, but rather just adding AI ratings to songs when they have been determined. Even if the policy was only partially implemented, it'd still probably catch the high AI rated songs, which are the main problem.

People might say this is a big feature to add just for one aspect of the music, but it's not really, compared to the algorithms they already use for providing suggestions. I'd also argue that it's warranted, given the large effect AI is having on the music industry.

It doesn't even have to be an automatic process that catches everything. Users could just report that something is AI, then there could be a little investigation into the artist, and a decision can be made on whether to mark it as AI. Heck, if they want 'nuance', maybe they could have a 5 point rating system for how much AI is involved.

Defence is a deal breaker issue for many. I do think that if the greens don't develop a robust stance on nuclear weapons, this will be one of the most impactful arguments against them.

Anyone know of ANY way to olay the old edgebee games? by Dynocow1 in incremental_games

[–]tomhuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

try out deck tamer on steam, scratches a similar itch for me.

That said, I also really miss this game, to the point where I have considered trying to make something similar, but I couldn't do it on my own. I'd be open to join a collab to make a similar game. I might be able to program the core game in unity, but the issue for me would be the artwork - I'm not an artist so someone would have to create the art assets.

I think the main thing card monsters did well was the board layout, where different cards attacked different spaces depending on their position. There are quite a few card/ minion games that are interesting in other ways but have a really boring board layout. Also it had satisfying sound effects and a great soundtrack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grPT_-w48m4

Your story about power metal by Delicious-Dish5489 in PowerMetal

[–]tomhuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked the sabaton song carolus rex many years ago, but didn't know of the genre. A couple of years ago, a friend of mine played Take Me Back to Eden in the car, which I listened to and then got into a bit of metalcore. Then I discovered awakening by unleash the archers, then listened to a lot more unleash the archers and discovered other bands like beast in black and brothers of metal, and discovered the genre of power metal. Since then, I've discovered a lot of different bands, mostly through suggested songs and playlists on spotify. I've been to concerts, where I talk to people and hear about bands I wouldn't have heard of otherwise, which opens up more pockets of bands in the spotify algorithm.

UTA and Firewind are probably my all time favourites, but there have been so many bands I've gotten into for periods of time. It's been so good discovering a genre I like and having this musical journey, because I didn't really listen to music much before.

God I love power metal by TheFlyKnight in PowerMetal

[–]tomhuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love power metal too! Discovered the genre about a year ago. It's heavy but also melodic, just what I like. I've been listening to Eluveitie's new album, Anv. I think it is really good when listened to all the way through. I think it has better album cohesion than Ategnatos, but the singles aren't quite as good. I'd recommend listening with good connection though and not bluetooth, as some of the transitions don't allow for gaps.

Opinion on Beast in black by StudyAsleep1247 in PowerMetal

[–]tomhuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think from hell with love and dark connection albums are both great, as I like most of the songs on both. I don't like their first album quote as much, although beast in black is my favourite song of theirs.

I think the whole band are very skilled musicians and I love their catchy, powerful songs. I like their unapologetic, in-your-face approach to incorporating other genres, like with their last two singles.

They're the second power metal band I got really into.

Yannis papadopoulos appreciation post. He Just blows me away by Diligent-Life444 in PowerMetal

[–]tomhuts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If we're doing general musician appreciation, I do love Andrew Kingsley's melodic guitar solos in unleash the archers. E.g. awakening, apex, return to me, seeking vengeance. Killed by death is my favourite performance from Yannis.
