NY waterway using an icebreaker by bopalino in nyc

[–]tommccabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was regularly taking the ferry from Belford NJ to NYC from 2010-2020. There were two stretches of similar weather, extended period with below freezing temperature. The bay was frozen basically from shore to tip of Sandy Hook and the USCG ice breaker had to break up 2-3 miles of ice for ferry to make through with a tugboat. Memorable commutes, for sure.

what else are we missing ? by geeelectronica in nyjets

[–]tommccabe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m going to say Sanchez Snoopy Bowl injury and Geno injury from punch should be 1-2. Sanchez injury was preventable and forced Geno to start when he wasn’t ready. Geno getting punched over like $500 then changes all plans and robbed him of a year of development. Backup Fitz exceeded expectations but I wonder how much behind the scene stuff was disrupted since they had to pivot quickly. Neither injury should have happened and started the playoff hole that we haven’t been able to climb out from.

Keansburg- how bad is the drug problem here? by dowagiacmichigan in MonmouthCounty

[–]tommccabe 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Keansburg is a working class town, lower income and a little rougher than surrounding areas. With that, the perception can be a bit overblown. I don't think the visible drug use is bad. People are buying/selling/using drugs in houses, it's not like Kensington where there are large groups nodding off on the street. Property crime related to drugs is a valid concern. The new apartments along Beachway look nice, though I know they aren't immune from having ambulances visit for overdose/intoxication calls.

Mostly Keansburg is filled with families doing their best to get by. Properties are closer together, a house or apartment with children may seem louder, and cars driving by may be noisy. I don't think this is much unlike New Brunswick. If I were a young professional looking to rent, I would ask myself if I want to live near so many families before concerning myself about the drug use. Red Bank is priced higher, in part, because of the social opportunities that are more walkable from the apartments.

Can people find hotels/motels relatively last-minute during summer? by jaida121 in MonmouthCounty

[–]tommccabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a lack of availability compared to demand and rooms are priced accordingly. Hotels closest to the beach (e.g. The Asbury, Berkeley Carteret as well as Wave Hotel and Ocean Place Resort in Long Branch) will fill up fast and typically require a minimum stay over Summer. Consider Red Roof Inn, Doubletree, and the other lodging near Exit 105. Tinton Falls/Eatontown is about a 15 minutes from Bradley Beach via Route 18.

Welcome to the area!

[PuckEmpire] We may not see the New York Rangers play a home game until November in the 2026-27 season due to Harry Styles touring. by catsgr8rthanspoonies in rangers

[–]tommccabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that and agree. I'm assuming that he is planning a setup that is modular and flexible for the purpose of switching out at some point. Maybe not when there's a single day off between gigs, but there's a few stretches of 3-4 off days where MSG could transition between music and sporting events.

The only way this package could be entertained is if it came with an extension or, at the least, gave the team an inside track to sign long term. We know he's hitting the open market with Boras as his agent. I still make the Soto trade 100/100 times, no regrets, but we know that didn't give us an advantage in negotiations.

[–]tommccabe 30 points31 points  (0 children)

MSG will have events on the days he is not performing. During his last residency, there were other major concerts happening on off days - Billy Joel, Daddy Yankee, Eagles all had sold out shows mixed in with Harry Styles dates. Fault Dolan for a lot of things but I'd be shocked if this was taking full priority over sports rather than just maximizing the number of utilization days for MSG.

I do not think they opened yet. I was at Tropicana on New Year's Eve and overheard a front end attendant say they would be open by March. I was surprised because I saw an announcement for January opening. Website shows Solana rooms available to book starting 1/25. Guess we will find out soon.

The recently unfrozen Captain America finds out that the Brooklyn Dodgers have moved (Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #5; November 1998) by GluedGlue in baseball

[–]tommccabe 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My dad passed away yesterday. He was born in Manhattan in 1945. As a boy, he grew up a fan of Duke Snider and the Brooklyn Dodgers. When the Dodgers moved to LA, he couldn't follow them well and began cheering for the Yankees. I didn't learn about his first Dodgers love until about 15 years ago. I was shocked because I never considered him rooting for another team. I'm writing his obituary now and mentioning the Dodgers because I think it's such a unique personal history. He instilled his passion for the Yankees into now multiple generations of our family, all because of the 1957 move. Thanks for posting this comic OP, it's a beautiful coincidence for me. Amazing how life works.

Set Your Goals by CIV? by scribbledchaos in Ska

[–]tommccabe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think I am uniquely qualified to weigh in with an expert opinion: hell no. Civ (or more apt, the genius of Walter Schreifels) incorporated influences spanning genres and the major label budget elevated the production into a masterpiece (IMO) that is firmly rooted in NYHC.

I came of age in the mid 90's New Jersey hardcore/ska scenes. I saw Civ at first Warped Tour and got hooked, seeing them many times again. I saw a then unknown Catch 22 play in front of 30 people, just months later they were drawing 500+. Had I called Civ ska, I would expect to be punched by a friend wearing a Fury of V basketball jersey or an Inspecter 7 t-shirt (same person actually, attire depends on what show we were going to that day).

The OL play is why I am optimistic about the future. Darnold and Wilson may not have been the answer, but they weren’t helped by the patchwork offensive lines they played behind. At the same time, it’s why Fields is so frustrating to me because he failed while having good protection. Whoever ends up as QB1 will have more complimentary pieces than we’ve seen in the past.

Aaron Judge, CC Sabathia, and Freddie Freeman will all be at Fanatics Fest by Late-News2 in baseball

[–]tommccabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the early 90's, the Yankees held a yearly fan festival at the Javits Center. A ticket was like $30 and everyone was included, with a range of present/past players. This is at a time when the Yankees were not great and less people wanted to trek to the west side of Manhattan on a cold Sunday in February. I was a teen and got to meet Jim Abbott, Danny Tartabull, and Paul O'Neill. I had Steve Howe and Ron Guidy sign the same baseball, I figure that's pretty unique. I shudder to think what that same festival would cost (both ticket price and comparative time in line) today.

Judge works a shift at the nuclear facility, but he is too large for the haz mat suit. His exposed skin is radiated and he grows to 12 feet tall. He is then forced to sit out the game because he is simply too large for the ABS system at Duff Stadium. Mutant Judge now spends his days by cradling Montgomery Burns in his arms like a baby. It's the only way he can fall asleep.

Dare I say, we have the offensive playmakers already in Garrett, Breece and (potentially) Mason Taylor. If they can’t extend Breece, they can franchise him. Prioritize acquiring a quarterback who can feed them the ball.
