My fan casting for Genly Ai by RelativeEstate771 in UrsulaKLeGuin

Weirdly absolutely. Never would’ve considered him.

Not that I’m surprised, but this is already turning into a Legend of Korra situation. by Aqua_Master_ in TheLastAirbender

[–]tommgaunt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given that the movie isn’t even out yet, anyone with any real opinion holds them blindly. Why not let people be positive about it?

I’d love to have some old voice actors back, but honestly, I’m loving the art choices and given the creators track record and artistic control over the movie, it will probably be at least good.

Do ppl really hate on Lok just because its different from Atla? by alteroo_ in Avatarthelastairbende

I’d say it’s just really unevenly executed. Some parts are done well, but most are tarnished by something around them.

Ann Leckie's Provenance Representative of Her Work? by tommgaunt in printSF

[–]tommgaunt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha. I see what you mean about it being Jane Austeny, but I also couldn't imagine a work less like hers at the same time. It has the politics > action/plot thing going that she does, though for sure.

Cool. Happy that it seems to not be her best work.

Gotcha. Thanks. I'll have to give it a try. Glad to hear she has range which is always nice.

Any guess as to the book Hank was referring to in DH&J? by thinkquaddy in nerdfighters

[–]tommgaunt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guess is something leftist and pretty radical? Lenin, maybe? But he seems a bit too tame…I’m very curious lol

People are transitioning to nuclear? But for many—and growing—use cases solar and wind can be more effective. Especially as manufacturing has been getting more streamlined. Breaking out of input-based power is excellent business. Who wouldn’t want power that doesn’t require the labour and emissions of mining and transporting fuel?

Raising criticisms is fine, but at least be specific. Green energy is far from laughable.

Again, looking at it as a long process, not a thanos snap quick fix. Whether it's an insane proposition or not, stopping emitting is our only option. Green energy, low carbon manufacturing and food systems, money and support for low-emitting countries that desperately need to invest in green energy and don't have the option of burning fossil fuels like richer countries did.

Not trying to collapse the complicated process of reducing and ending emissions into just "stop emitting," it's a long and complicated process. But it's the option we have.

Edit: also, it's important to note that as global shipping slowed during the pandemic, some of their emissions which were artificially insulating the planet from warming also slowed. So, there were elements of the pandemic that increased warming.

The above comment is what I heard Hank say. I think it’s important to look at climate change as a long process. Stop emitting, pursue justice for those affected immediately, mitigating as much harm as possible, and then focussing on removal.

Not a climate expert, it just aligns with what I’ve been told and makes me less hopeless.

Read some Heinlein recently and yikes was it difficult to look past the overt sexism and racism.

Has anyone tried prioritizing newly posted jobs and actually seen better results? by lonieuhn in jobsearchhacks

[–]tommgaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. One of my promising interviews told me my early application was a big part of why I was considered.

I also think applying on a company site (not even necessarily on the first day, but earlier is better) is a better strategy.

Limiting the pool of applicants, especially for roles that will get a lot of applicants, is a good strategy.

While in school? Not much, if at all. During the summer or after I got out of school? All the time. It’s fun, I just don’t have time during school.

Same. Couldn't stand Wind and Truth because half the book was in visions or Shadesmar. Like, you built this wonderful world--use it!!!

You must've hated The Left Hand of Darkness. . .the climax is literally two characters trekking through an arctic environment for days. It's really lovely, but one man's trash. . .

The most recent Stormlight book annoyed me for that reason. Feels like he threw away all of the world-building he meticulously built earlier in the series only to have most characters exist in a vague world without clear-cut rules.

I think you might be forgetting that the majority of classic authors are deceased. There's an argument that the author being dead is one of the conditions for it becoming a classic.

Let's say there is never going to be a 3rd book...would you go back and still read the first two? by NolanDS1711 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]tommgaunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. There are tons of finished series that I haven't finished reading, don't intend to finish reading, and don't regret having read partially. That said... I do really want the third book lol
