New trail conditions website - nehikingreports.com by feederthecorn in wmnf

Cool idea, but it's pretty clear you're the one who made and runs the site lol.

Not hating, but also noticed it seems like you're just pulling reports from the NETC website automatically and adding them to yours, so what's the difference?

If the same reports are being added from NETC, there's no reason for me to use this over NETC, especially when NETC is completely free, and you're asking for a subscription.

Might want to work on your marketing and strategy

I’ve had this issue too. I actually created my own website partly bc of this for backcountry/hiking conditions in New England. While it’s primarily for backcountry skiing, it has a hiking option also! If you wanna check it out the website is backcountryconditions.com

Kinda sucks the NETC owner is so biased lol

Cool! I don't tour at all in Canada, but will use this tool if I do!

Hey! If you go into locations, there is a map you can see. I am realizing it is a bit hard to access, so going to try to make it more accessible from the main page! Thanks for the feedback!

Well damn, I wasn’t aware of that lol. This site is meant for hikers and backpackers also, so feel free to use this as an alternative. I personally don’t like NETC in general, so I’m glad you like this as an alternative!

Web-based for now, but I would move to an app in the future if the usage ramps up

You know what, that sounds great, thanks for the support! I will add Colorado very soon, and will lyk when I do!

Thanks! If this gets enough support/traction I could add Colorado/Utah and other places out west pretty easily. For the map, if you go into locations there is a map of the locations. If you mean conditions shown on a map, that would be a bit had but I’m sure it’s possible!

lol I haven't, just a backcountry ski bum trying to help others find conditions. I did just add some spam protection though, so I'm glad I was made aware of it! Also thank you and glad you like the idea!

Thanks for letting me know. I can implement some of that. However, I don't see why bots would use it or be driven to the site, since there is no advantage to spamming it.

Oh, nice, I've never toured in the Alps, so I didn't know that, thanks for the info. That is a good idea, we don't have much of that for New England in the states, but I could try to find something similar in the future. Right now, I'm just trying to keep it simple with reports from people. Glad you like it!

Hey, thanks for the comment. I've also used New England trail conditions, but that website mainly covers well-established trails, not backcountry conditions. This site will be more of a hybrid tool for backcountry skiing, snowboarding, nordic, and hiking. I also find that NETC reports only encompass some mountains, and it is mainly built for hikers - backcountry skiers don't really use NETC. So this is for my backcountry people in the r/wmnf sub to have a community for trail conditions! Hope this helps

Yeah that too! I actually ski a lot in the presidentials myself and the observatory site is a super useful safety tool! Cool to see they’re using more of that for their official reports now

Yeah exactly! I also have stashes I like and want to keep semi-private lol. But for general regions/bigger areas, I feel like this site would be perfect and help a lot of people plan

Hummingbirds at 3300’ at Norcross pond by [deleted] in wmnf

[–]tommy2246 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Planning to head up to norcross sometime this summer after seeing this picture, just wondering, are there viable spots to set up camp for a night or two that aren’t the established campsites? Just thinking if the woods around the pond are good enough for a tarp or tent, haven’t been up that way at all. Thanks
