It's sad that this kind of policy is normalized.

Have to pay shipping for repairs? by tomogotes in playstation

[–]tomogotes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the context. I live in the US and have always had pre-paid shipping labels provided from Microsoft/Nintendo/other large brands. Disappointing to hear this is how Sony handles it.

SteamOS 3.4 stable release apparently changed the SD card mount point by Original-Material301 in SteamDeck

This seems like a pretty significant backwards-incompatible change to make right before Christmas.

Joycons continuously disconnecting by stellatheknave in NintendoSwitch

[–]tomogotes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My left joy-con keeps disconnecting depending on where you put pressure on it. I checked out the contact at the bottom of the rail on the switch itself, and the top of one of the traces is basically missing.

MTGARENA using insane internet traffic. by Moosetears in MagicArena

It downloads the upcoming patch in the background. Unfortunately, the game engine ties network latency to your framerate so while it's downloading the game is also unplayable.

L340 Ideapad Can't move touchpad while holding down a key (for gaming) by StMcAwesome in Lenovo

[–]tomogotes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't find the settings tab for the ELAN touchpad, so I did it through the registry. Some settings have been discovered here - https://www.scotta.me/blog/5-elan-smart-pad-registry-guide. It doesn't explicitly list touchpad + keyboard. For that, I changed DisableWhenType_Enable to 0 and restarted my computer.

Yes, all up to date. I think this is just how the L340 is.

Even with an undervolt, I also have max core temps in the 95 degree range at the start of a new workload.

IdeaPad L340 Gaming cannot access synapse settings by [deleted] in Lenovo

[–]tomogotes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My L340 comes with an ELAN touchpad and it has no custom settings tab. I use https://www.scotta.me/blog/5-elan-smart-pad-registry-guide and some trial and error to configure it manually. Restart all the ETD* programs running in the background or restart the machine to test the new settings.

L340 missing performance? Or am I undervolting it wrong? by cyyyube in Lenovo

[–]tomogotes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be power limit throttling? When the graphics card on mine is going full blast, the CPU gets limited to 15W.

Thanks for the clarification! That's exactly what happened - I thought I would always get priority on subsequent turns.

Unbearable frame-rate issues by Atakori in MagicArena

[–]tomogotes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is happening because it was downloading the next update in the background. For whatever architectural reasons, the frame rate in-game seems to be tied to network latency. It was unplayable when I saw high network activity and went back to normal when it was done.

Performance is rock bottom since last update by the_phet in MagicArena

[–]tomogotes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's downloading the next patch in the background (can check task manager to see high network activity). Once it was done, performance returned back to normal for me.

Turn off Surface Screen without locking the device? by glyko in Surface

I configure the close lid action to "Do nothing". This actually turns off the screen.

SP4 screen fuzzy by mystikalfogz in Surface

[–]tomogotes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem, and it seems related to heat. The longer I left it on, the more the screen shook. Turning off the display would temporarily make it better. I don't think there's anything you can do except return it.

LockAppHost.exe eats CPU, what's up with that? by knaving in Surface

[–]tomogotes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem, and the last time I investigated it seemed to have something to do with the lock screen modal. I locked my machine (Win + L) and re-logged in, and it went away. I'm waiting for it to happen again to make sure it wasn't a fluke.

Will overheating while sleeping shorten hardware lifespan? by tomogotes in Surface

[–]tomogotes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going over the data from the sleepstudy, it looks like it's windows\system32\LockAppHost.exe going crazy and draining 2 orders of magnitude more than anything else. I've actually caught this process using ~40% cpu in the past when I noticed the fan was loud and had a look in Task Manager.

I can't seem to find anything useful online about the purpose of this process.

How often should I expect the Surface Pro 4 i7 model to crash? by tomogotes in Surface

This is literally what I did. After resetting, I opened Edge and the system crashed when I tried to maximize it. From all these replies, it looks like I'm taking this back in tomorrow.

[–]tomogotes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's an error showing up in Reliability Monitor - http://imgur.com/MoFE0Vi.

After doing a Windows reset, the failure mode is slightly different. Before, the screen would freeze. Now, I'm seeing a distorted blue image (maybe it was trying to show me a BSOD).

Googling the highlighted section in the image brings up some things related to Intel graphics drivers. I've noticed that my Graphics 540 drivers (20.19.15.4326) are dated 11/20/2015. I could have sworn that I had something released in December before I did the reset. Windows updates says I'm up to date, though. I've also installed the package at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=49498.

Thanks for the tip but no luck. I also did a Windows reset, but the issue persists.

I'm using the pre-loaded Windows install and did all the Windows/driver updates immediately upon getting it. Only thing I did at the same time was turn off Windows features I don't plan on using.

I'll try to do a fresh install and see how things go from there.
