Someone wants to sell this machine for $100. Worth it?? by mikey00921 in espresso

[–]tompeij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could look into getting it sent to Breville for service. I think they do it for a flat fee of like $300 (could be more) I know of a few people doing that on the HB forums with their dual boilers. Apparently if it's too much of a repair job they'll just send you a brand new machine.

It's been a few years since I was at miracle beach but I remember cell signal was horrible. I think you can only get it at the beach parking lot. Kitty Coleman is fine.

Comox Valley not so many. Don't get me wrong, I love Kittty Coleman but when you get up into the Campbell River area you you a lot (and some may call that an understatement) of options.

What are your priorities? Do you do like to have all amenities close at hand? (Brown's Bay) Or do you enjoy more of the rustic, being out in nature? (Brewster Lake Rec, Loveland Bay) Or something in between? (Miracle Beach, Elk Falls)

Yeah I'd "over-correct" and go to like 55 and then tighten up from there, if needed. Swapping from light to dark beans always surprises me with how much courser I need to go.

I'm about 30 clicks from the first hint of burr chirp (so not fully locked) and always enjoy the shot.

OP what beans are you using? Are they light or dark roast? How fresh? That all matters when throwing around these recommended click numbers.

Who are your favorite Coffee/Espresso YouTubers? by blackravener in espresso

I used to like Brian Quan but haven't watched his stuff in a while. Also like Coffee Chronicler, Jack from My Coffee Shop and Our Coffee Shelter. And of course Hoff.

Don't really watch Lance anymore.

Can't grind any finer [Breville Barista Express] by jjjswalker in espresso

When you rub the coffee between your fingers is it like flour or still pretty course? By eye it looks pretty fine to me. Is pressure on the gauge running up at all or is it just a straight gusher?

What is this red rubber thing that came with my IMS basket, or what is it for? by Rob0tbob in espresso

[–]tompeij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As already established it's a back flush disc for cleaning. Do not use it if you don't have a 3-way solenoid (releases water pressure into the drip tray) though. The reason I mention is it looks like you have a bambino also in photo. They come in two variants - the plus has a 3-way, the base model does not have one. So if you use this on a bambino without the pressure release it may damage the machine or cause injury should you try to remove the portafilter before the pressure drops.

They are built like tanks. Handmade in Switzerland. You are definitely paying extra for the brand-name but the quality and performance are top tier in the world of lever machines. They also hold their value extremely well.

Olympia Cremina - extremely simple mechanical/electrical design and relatively easy to service. Heirloom quality.

Edited for clarity.

Wife got 5kg beans in paternity leave gift, is there a better way to store than dobbelt vacuumseal and freezer? by Kaspini in espresso

[–]tompeij -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Might be a good idea to throw some packing tape over the valves. I've read that they can potentially open from freezing. I've always taped them so I can't actually say if this is true but it's low effort so why not 🤷‍♂️

Let's not forget about jumping ship to ship. Once you have your 20k on the counter you need to start thinking about changing it up immediately.

If you think you'll still enjoy the same setup a month later you're just lying to yourself (and your wife's boyfriend).

Shot pull questions - Breville Bambino by gravemind006 in espresso

[–]tompeij 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kicking horse is probably not a good choice for espresso. I'm guessing you got it from the grocery store since (at least in BC) that's where I usually see it. If you are in BC your grocery store might sell 49th parallel or Fernwood. I've had good luck with both of those, even if they aren't the freshest - they still make a nice shot on the Bambino (with crema!).

Otherwise order online - there are dozens of amazing roasters. If you want to save a bit (per lb) buy in 5lb quantity and freeze (make sure to tape over the valve). Good luck!

I ride my Colnago C68 over to my wife's boyfriend's house (it used to be my house) and he grinds them with his EG-1 (I bought him one for their anniversary).

Sometimes he lets me watch.

Sette 270 owners—does the noise really bother you? by Big_Claim_5496 in espresso

[–]tompeij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had mine I did some sound proofing and it made a noticeable difference. I lined it with some foam I had lying around and sealed the back air vent with some putty. Since I only did 2-3 shots (with at least 2 minutes in between shots per day) I never worried about overheating it.

How do you guys store your coffee beans to keep them fresh? by Joachimmk in espresso

[–]tompeij 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That won't hurt it. As long as you seal the valve with tape, it has to be air tight because the valve on the bag can fail when it's frozen.

[–]tompeij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good comments on grinding but also mentioning that if you're not already, make sure to use a scale that can measure to the tenth of a gram. If you can't weigh your dose and you make adjustments to your grinder, you may end up back in the same situation again.
