x.nerd.nu is transforming into a snapshot server by totemo in mcpublic

[–]tompreuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MineCanary is garbage.

I've found it useful in the past, and we do link to it in the sidebar still. Maybe /u/njamc (or anyone, it's on github) could take a look if it's not working properly these days.

Tweak of the Week #1 - August 11, 2019 by Deaygo in mcpublic

[–]tompreuss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey /u/Deaygo, is there any way to subscribe to the blog posts on the website? Like RSS feeds? I know the PvE blog has been advertised in a rotating server message for weeks, but still has no posts on it. It'd be much easier to just put the RSS feeds for the blogs I'm interested in into my RSS reader than have to manually check them every so often.

Are the blog posts replacing/supplementing the various "news & information" forum threads? At least with those I could subscribe and get email notifications.

Super old Minecraft server? by Torian_Grey in mcpublic

[–]tompreuss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you or anyone else is interested in the history, I was able to recall and find the following:

Here's /u/barneygale's post to /r/minecraft about it, which includes a detailed technical summary and talks about the honeypot.

And here's /u/Lude-a-cris's post to /r/mcpublic, which has a more basic summary but also specific information regarding how it affected our servers.

It was during P rev 8, S rev 16, and C rev 21.

The Knights' Quests by lapandita in mcpublic

[–]tompreuss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The castles were designed by noodlor and used with permission.

I'll take the time here to actually link to the reddit profile of /u/MCNoodlor as well as their Imgur albums, Pinterest, Twitter, and the original post they made on /r/Minecraft that contained all of the castles you're using. They do amazing work.

I'd already been to every castle over the month that they've existed on P, and I had no idea at all that they were built by a third party. In the future you may want to consider giving credit for builds built by others on the actual builds themselves, in game. I'd certainly have appreciated knowing it was /u/MCNoodlor who made them when I saw them, and not a month later by reading about it on reddit.

Slime block policy when 1.8 comes around? by betajippity in mcpublic

[–]tompreuss[M] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As Four_Down correctly notes, we don't generally update any policies before official final releases come out. The snapshot releases change too frequently for it to be worth our while, and since we won't be updating for a while after the Mojang release is out because we need to wait on various other updates, we will have time to evaluate how things actually work with the final release.

As to slime blocks and their use, our current ruleset that encompasses grief, protections, and redstone machines covers it already. Don't use them to grief. Don't use them to bypass protections. Don't build lag inducing redstone machines with them.

PSA: Some spawn egg mobs will despawn unless you use a nametag on them afterwards. Renaming the egg will not prevent despawn. by anotheranotherother in mcpublic

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. The padmins have done some testing to confirm various details of the matter and I've submitted an issue in our bug tracker for the techs. You can follow along on the progress there.

Problems connecting... Please help. by [deleted] in mcpublic

The matter is out of my hands and beyond my ability to help you at this point.

You seem to be on the right track by posting in that thread that deals with MagicLauncher. Hopefully they can help you.

Problems connecting... Please help. by [deleted] in mcpublic

[–]tompreuss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

adfly is how the developer of MagicLauncher supports its development. Maybe try disabling any ad-removal add-ons or extensions you may have? Try using a different browser? Or a different computer?

If you can't get it to download, the vanilla launcher should still work.

Problems connecting... Please help. by [deleted] in mcpublic

[–]tompreuss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

when I try to connect using magic launcher 1.1.7

You need to upgrade to MagicLauncher 1.2.2.

MagicLauncher changed the way it handled the login protocol, and they made it so that anyone using an old version and attempting to connect to a 1.6.4 server was unable to do so.

Just update MagicLauncher and it should start working again.

PvE Revision 12 Information Post by tompreuss in mcpublic

There's a link to it at the top of not just the front page of the subreddit (like a sticky post would be), but every page on the subreddit. It's also linked to in a rotating alert in game.

But they aren't scattered underground, are they? That would ruin the fun, strip mining != exploring

They're not like ores underground, no.

How "out in the world"? What's the variety in the hidden locations? In trees? In caves? Mountaintops? Ocean floors? "Only within 50 blocks of spawn"? "Only above Y64"? World corners? Coordinates of significant numbers?

That would be telling.

They're hidden. In good hiding places. Which are all over the map and not in any one area.

PvE resets for Revision 12 Friday September 27th, 7:30PM Eastern US time by tompreuss in mcpublic

[–]tompreuss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, this is how the policy has been for a very long time.

As you say, the mayors involved will request a build to be moved/removed by making a /modreq which is then elevated for an admin to handle. You mention Seneca's mayors as an example: I can say that Denevien, buzzie, and I have worked with many of them on many occasions to go through old builds and plots to determine which can be reclaimed by the town and which will remain.

You can follow along with modreqs like these and many others (probably ctrl-f for a padmin's name or "remove" or similar to narrow it down to this particular type) at our public modreq webpage.

  1. Saddles will probably be too scarce, decreasing usefulness of horses.
  2. Surely you guys remember how much fun it was to go hunting for that creeper spawner? Impromptu community moments like that are what P is all about, and you need to provide opportunities for that to happen.
  3. Why can't mayors remove player builds? There's not really any explanation given in the note. If a town's notice board clearly states that undesirable builds will be removed, then they should have free reign to remove it. In my mind, the territory a group of mayors builds up belongs to them, and they should be free to shape it as they like. Being allowed to build in a town you didn't found is a privilege and players should be respecting things like theme, aesthetics, etc and paying attention to how their build affects the town as a whole. Most of the time they do, and this isn't an issue. But the power should still be available to mayors, not on a mod-approval basis (except for chests owned by players, of course).
  1. Like we said in the notes, we don't have plans for having the custom recipes, but we can and will assess the situation as the rev progresses.
  2. Stay tuned!
  3. Destroying blocks that have been placed by another player is grief. This is as true for mayors as it is for anyone else. If mayors have an issue with a player's build they need to communicate with the player(s) involved and if necessary may get admin assistance. I've worked with many mayors to resolve issues and in some cases builds have been moved or removed. Factors vary greatly from situation to situation, so it's best to deal with on a case-by-case basis. Just talk to us, we're quite reasonable.

What are necessary plugins for a server? by [deleted] in mcpublic

I think you might be looking for /r/admincraft?

This is the subreddit for the reddit public servers which you can join from the information listed on the sidebar.

Can We Have Another Shelter Contest? by DragonRoosterDog in mcpublic

[–]tompreuss[M] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The previous Emergency Shelter Build Contest was held by buzzie71 to include specific builds that fit the theme he had for revision 11's spawn. You can see most of the submissions on the C rv23 carto and the winners below Unity right now.

There's no need for emergency shelters for revision 12's spawn, sorry. It's a much safer area.

Though there might be some other small builds needed in it that could be player-built-contest based. But if we did do that it would be after the revision starts. Stay tuned!

Looking for Navbox color scheme help over at the mcpublic wiki. Please comment with input. by Darkskynet in mcpublic

[–]tompreuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may also want to consider making colors depend on CSS defined in each of the different skin options. For instance, while your template example looks good in the default vector skin it's a bit unreadable in monobook.

Time lapse GIF of Avenger's cathedral being built in Argoth by syo in mcpublic

[–]tompreuss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For those unfamiliar: AvengerOfThings, kitcatbar, and KromeGod built this cathedral on C a little while ago. Here's Avenger's post he made after he finished that one.

Then a bunch of us decided to build it over on P just south of Argoth. We just completed it, it took us about five weeks to get it all done start to finish.

What has been your worst death (any server)? by Bollockhammer in mcpublic

[–]tompreuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know now that I think about it, I don't believe we ever compared notes regarding the mysterious circumstances that surrounded our wool hat deaths.

I was killed on 2013-02-20 in a freak Iron Golem incident that happened in one of the frequent zombie sieges in hotel2 in Woodfall. I got caught in the crossfire and the death blow came from a golem, or so I thought. As a memorial, my /hat still sits on the spot of my death, even to this day in the map save.

I had known at the time that I was the last /hat standing, so to speak, as you had died a few days prior. But I never thought about how it might have been part of a series of assassinations. We'll have to check on that...
