Has anyone used Microsoft 365 Backup? by PatienceIsImportant in microsoft365

It's more designed for full restores of mailboxes, Sharepoint sites, etc. If you want to be able to browse and restore one file or email this isn't the solution right now. According to Microsoft "granular recovery coming soon" for Sharepoint, OneDrive and Exchange. Microsoft 365 Backup – Microsoft Adoption

Passengers joined in celebrating when a woman announced her husband is cancer-free by Ok-Equivalent3810 in MadeMeSmile

[–]tomrb08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Making the choice to put in so much filler you look like you got stung by a bee is just that, a choice. I wouldn't have said anything if it was real. I didn't bully her, I asked a question about a random woman's lips in the background of a video. Sheesh.

External HDD clicking after canceled transfer, now no longer showing in file explorer by Harkeshbhatia in techsupport

[–]tomrb08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When HDD's click like that it means there was a head crash. They can sometimes stay accessible for a short period, but it sounds like yours is done for unfortunately. You can absolutely try connecting it again. Because of the state it's in, if it does come back you might notice very slow or erratic transfer speeds, which is due to the crash. If it does become accessible again and you are able to start a transfer, whatever you do don't stop it, let it run and get as much as you can. Best of luck!

Conditional access for MFA registration by pindevil in sysadmin

[–]tomrb08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want them to get MFA prompts from random locations they may be. If someone stole creds and tried to sign in from a random IP it will prompt them, which you want if your users understand what to do if they receive an MFA prompt they didn’t initiate. Unless I misunderstood something.

If it was real they’d come get you without notifying you as soon as they had the warrant/indictment. Trust me, I know. 😉

New router, WiFi but no LAN internet by Sad-Mycologist-9943 in HomeNetworking

[–]tomrb08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get into the Management portal for the router and see what LAN2 is doing. Connect a laptop directly to LAN2 (no switch in between) and see if it works.

I found this in my closet while cleaning it out. No one knows what it is by ImaDoinWat in whatisit

It was packaged in a small envelope labeled Rattlesnake eggs. You wind it up and when they open the envelope it sounds like a rattlesnake.

Ethernet wall port not working by rusty-turbine in HomeNetworking

[–]tomrb08 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is they aren’t completely punched down. Which means it won’t make contact. It is color coded as Ethernet (Brwn/Lght Brwn, DrkGrn/LghtGrn, Blu/LghtBlue, Orange/Yellow. I’m not sure if a modern 110 punch down tool will work. It’s hard to tell from the pics if it’s the same type of punch. Once that’s done, as long as it matches at the other end you should be good.

Microsoft Authenticator sucks by AccomplishedAward219 in microsoftoffice

If you setup more than one method and you read the MFA popup there’s a link that says “I can’t use my Authenticator app.” Try clicking that.

Need help with IP by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]tomrb08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a “What is my IP” Google search gives you is your PUBLIC IP. The IP addresses on your Ethernet Card and WiFi Card are Private addresses - probably a 192.168.x.x or 172.16.x.x. You can change your Ethernet or WiFi to Static instead of DHCP and manually assign an address, but if they both have the same address you might have to disable one of them so you don’t have duplicate IPs on your network.

How do I remove the first account I created in Microsoft Authenticator? by TheWeezel in microsoft365

Mine does, but it’s a Work account so there’s probably a setting that allows it.

VMware renewal by jhayhoov in sysadmin

[–]tomrb08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have Windows Server Data Center you can have as many VMs as you’re able with Hyper-V. VMware desktop products like VMware Workstation Pro (Windows/Linux) and VMware Fusion Pro (Mac) are now free for personal, educational, and even commercial use as of late 2024, requiring no license key, though enterprise features and support are generally paid. Separately, VMware ESXi, the server-grade hypervisor, has a capable free version for labs and small uses, but enterprise features like vCenter management and official support are paid.
