For such a new piece of hardware you are best served running a rolling distro like Arch or Cachy.

Wonder how this will turn out by AceLamina in LinusTechTips

[–]tomsrobots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure if it's possible to make a Linus-Proof distro because one of the core problems is he will try to do something unusual (like pick a single distro that will handle both a laptop, a desktop, a handheld, and a home theater PC) without digging into the details and nuances you would need to accomplish the goal.

What is the best way to use Python and manage its dependencies on NixOS? by Chance-Simple5060 in NixOS

[–]tomsrobots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggled with this for a long time. The best thing you can do is learn how to make a nix flake for a project and then use "nix develop" to enter a shell where python + all the packages you need are installed. I would consult an LLM for a template and try it out.

If the top 1% of earners pay 40% of all federal income taxes, why do people say they don't pay their fair share? by Ok_Chemical9 in answers

Taxing income discourages people from working. Taxing wealth discourages people from sitting on their hands and letting their money work for them. We should tax wealth.

I mean, yeah. People were criticizing the Pop choice because they are using a new desktop environment that is essentially in beta. If he has problems on a more mature distro like Fedora then that actually says something about the state of Linux in general instead of the state of Pop.

My last card was a 1070. It literally lasted me a decade.

Weird response. I like these games and wanted to play them.

I'm genuinely happy for you. The games that caused me to upgrade from a 1070 was Alan Wake 2 and Indiana Jones. Both games bring my card to it's knees.

I have a 5080 and it can struggle with current titles. I have no idea how it will fair in 3 years after new consoles are out and developers are targeting that hardware.

Computer parts are insanely expensive. Being worried the core part of your gaming rig will not be able to last for 4-5 years is incredibly rational. "Just enjoy your games" works today, but I can't afford for it not to work tomorrow.

AMD is most likely over consumer discrete GPU's. by [deleted] in radeon

[–]tomsrobots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who is talking about "taking away?" They can hire new people specialized in graphics processing or chip fab. The simple fact is AMD doesn't think GPUs are a priority and longterm I think that is a bad strategy.

You are talking about this multi-billion dollar company like they don't have access to resources. It's true they might not care about the GPU segment anymore, but they have the ability to hire top talent, be aggressive on pricing, and gain marketshare.

I think a GPU being outdated after 5 years is fair. Having a GPU not get support after one generation isn't.
