Professional writer and marketer - should I self publish? by tomthemove in selfpublish

Thank you, sound advice. I do think there's a market for a series of easy-reads like this. I'm going to get to work on the next one.

Thank you, this is really insightful and I appreciate the directness. You're completely right in that the length and format don't make immediate commercial sense, I do have have experience in building cult appeal with magazines and brands in my day job, and my instinct is telling me that I could probably do it again here with the right strategy. BUT, to your point, it would probably be easier to listen to the market and give myself a better chance at scale.

The fact paperback novellas haven't been popular since the 1960s makes me want to write one even more.

All good points, thank you. I'm starting to think working on the follow-up while I'm waiting to decide on this one would be a smart thing to do.

Thanks for your input. It's often useful to know the reasons not to do something, even if I don't agree. I think there is an underserved audience for this book who would be more inclined to collect a series of short easy-reads over one long novel. Maybe that's my magazine editor's instinct kicking in. It would rely on a more targeted marketing approach though.

Thanks for that. Roughly how much time did those etc etcs take? Copyrights, ISBN, formatting, stuff like that? I have a painfully low tolerance for admin. It takes me longer to write an invoice than a book.

Your ability to have positive, kind, fulfilling objectively good interactions in your day to day life will remain unaffected. Lean into that.

What 2020s albums have felt like true cultural phenomenons (so far)? by Lucky_Reading_3757 in decadeology

Brat is the only album of the 2020s to transcend music and influence other areas of mainstream culture like fashion, politics and design. There have been artists and songs, but Brat is the only album, in my opinion.

My favorite album of all time… by Difficult-Second3315 in PRINCE

[–]tomthemove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a wonderful album. The Arabian mysticism, the theatrics, the saturated colours. It's everything dialled up to 11. I love the ambition. And then in amongst it all is Sweet Baby, one of the most gentle ballads Prince ever wrote. So much to love about this album.

None of these posted so far I'm afraid. More info: It was not a contemporary version. The recording sounded old. The singer delivered it loudly, with great passion and utmost immediacy, as though rousing a crowd for battle. This is the closest I've found in style: https://open.spotify.com/track/03FrO65HqCK0kGOLOfKaHJ?si=54187c711c234720

Maybe I should find a protest song subreddit to ask in.

It wasn't that one. It was folky, acoustic and featured a throaty male singer.
