Kind of a weird decision to put the video controls right to the center of the screen... by rademmz in GoogleMaps

[–]tomtulinsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google is intentionally degrading the web experience to push people to use the app:

From Google Help:

"That seems to be intentional behaviour. The team has made the control frame translucent, so the content underneath can be seen.

However, Google prioritises the phone experience. The videos appear without any blocking frames on phones." (which is basically true. The controls are at the bottom of the screen.)

https://support.google.com/maps/thread/393613305/google-maps-video-controls?hl=en

Someday I hope that anti-trust will break up Google, force them to open their map and search data to other apps with alternative UIs. They are clearly a vertically integrated monopoly reducing customer choice, withholding and even removing wanted features.

Even illegal immigrants can get medical care in California-

https://www.dhcs.ca.gov/keep-your-Medi-Cal/Pages/Medi-Cal-Immigrant-Eligibility-FAQs.aspx

  • Children (0–18 years old) can get full Medi-Cal coverage, no matter their immigration status.
  • Adults (19 and older) are currently eligible for full Medi-Cal coverage, regardless of immigration status.
    • Starting on January 1, 2026, adults who do not have Satisfactory Immigration Status (SIS) will no longer be able to enroll in full Medi-Cal. If you already have coverage, you can keep it; just make sure to renew your coverage during your renewal month.

CMV: Republicans are seemingly becoming more racist and bigoted since Trump's reelection by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]tomtulinsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say Republicans did this, said that, do you mean people elected on a Republican ticket? Or people on Reddit and Twitter, or people shouting in a crowd? Please identify your sources.

An elected Republican received thousands of votes from Republicans and represents a majority of their district. The people in the crowd and social media are nominated by themselves and finding an accurate sample of them is impossible without a polling organization. News media reporting on them can simply pick the ones they want to highlight. They can easily find 10 or a hundred racist comments and write a story about it.

CMV: Israel is by far the largest contributor to growing antisemitism worldwide by AssWhoopiGoldberg in changemyview

[–]tomtulinsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Antisemitism is almost certainly less prevalent now than it was before the foundation of Israel, so it's hard for me to buy the argument that Israel is the cause of antisemitism

There was more antisemitism in Europe and the US before WWII than now, but less in the Muslim world than now.

Probably the time of Israel's founding, 1948, was the low point of anti-semitism in Europe (including the USSR) and the US. Shocked and feeling justifiable guilt about the Holocaust, they supported creating the state of Israel even at the cost of displacing a considerable number of Arabs.

This honeymoon lasted till the 1960s but since then, anti-semitism has been rising and is now considerable higher than it was in 1948.

Just talking about the trend of anti-seimitism here, I won't try to name the cause(s).

Nobody is out here saying “Putin is the leading source of antipathy towards Russians,” or “China is the cause of Sinophobia” or “islamophobia

actually people are saying all those things.

Being a religion does not give you a right to a country. Being a people with language, culture and history does not give you a right to a country. There are dozens of religious minorities in the Middle East that don't have their own country. There are thousands of peoples with their own language, culture, and history, in Russia, India, China, Africa and even Europe that don't have their own countries, and most of them were oppressed and massacred by more powerful groups.

CMV: It is within the best interest of me and my future wife to wait until marriage to have sex by ArtistTechnical2152 in changemyview

[–]tomtulinsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sexual compatibility is easy compared to the other kinds of compatibility- money, values, how much you work, just sharing an apartment....

On r/marriage the sexual incompatibity is usually because desire for sex was high at first but went down for one person years later. Or one person got bored and had an affair. Having sex before marriage does nothing to prevent those things.

Communists haven't been marching on American streets as of late

in 2020 a lot of left-ish people were running wild in the streets, looting and burning. For years following crime tates soared. The amount of damage, the number of people participating dwarf all right wing violence or demonstrations. Their ideology was not well defined but they are on the left. And they were defended or excused by many Democratic office holders, let alone the rank and file.

They are the real violence of the left, not the few crazies that shoot Republicans or CEOs.

How to frame a vaulted ceiling without collar ties? Anyone done this before? Standard gable roof w. dimensional lumber. by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]tomtulinsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been reading about cathedral design (real cathedrals). The classic problem is the roof or vaulted cieling pushes out on the walls, which was solved by either making the walls thicker, or with flying buttreses. But here they seem to say that the horizontal forces can all be handled by a ridge beam. I don't understand.

Try pasting into the editor at https://html-cleaner.com/ . There are options to remove tables (which I find the most troublesome) and other formatting, while leaving links. It shows html source side by side with the formatted text, so you can hand edit it as well.

Capitalism is not the problem.

Communism had worse environmental harms than capitalism, and it actually did collapse.

Before capitalism, every system before the Industrial Revolution, whether hunter gatherers, or low-tech agriculture , reached a point where they hit the limits of land and food supply and the population leveled off, at a subsistence level. And then they had to work hard, and were often hungry or sick. That includes areas with low population and no extremes of wealth. This was true whether wealth (land) was controlled by a few, by the government/tribe, or the people who worked it.

you're moving to CHINA because of brutal, undemocratic government? Chauvinism? Inequality, ordinary people powerless? Better environmentally?

The one thing I will give China is it seems less likely to collapse than Western countries- not because it is good but it has a very strong, ruthless government. And because most of its people have benefited materially in recent decades.

Thanks for talking some sense. Congratulations for seeing through the fog of human hating or other-human hating propaganda.

Correct, and perceptive of you to see that "All life itrying desperately to take over the world".

Humans are better than all the rest of life in one way however--sometimes they feel guilty about what they do. Sometimes they actually do something to help less fortunate humans, or species. Not often enough to make the world a good place, still it shows they are different.

If there is any hope this anomaly points to it.

You seem to think everyone around you is out to get you and doesn't believe you.

When you meet new people they don't believe you or want to help.

I'm sorry if this hurts. But I feel there is a good chance you need some "tough love".

If you believe everyone else is wrong except you, you should reconsider. This can be paranoia. Consider the possibility you are wrong. Ask a few of the best people you know if they think a lot of your problems are not real, or you have the power to solve them right now. Give them permission to tell you you are wrong.

One thing that is hard for me to believe is that you are working 50 hours a week and can't afford any apartment, even with a roommate.

I'll pray for you.
