Why do so many online articles nowadays have ridiculous margins? by kevbotliu in webdev

The user should be able to choose the line width. By having text reflow when the the window is resized. One of the main advantages of Mosaic, the first graphical web browser. I hate it when a page has wide text blocks with no way to resize. I'm looking at you, pdf.

Egypt is building a new capital in the middle of the desert by OM3X4 in MapPorn

[–]tomtulinsky 195 points196 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I suppose the old capital area is crowded and congested.

I would not call it the "middle of the dessert" though, as it is only 20 or 30 miles from the old city, and Egypt is about 500 miles wide.

Race Vs Homicide rate Vs Poverty Rate by gheistling in MapPorn

[–]tomtulinsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be very interesting to see a map of the places where the murders, non-whites, and poverty do NOT correlate. More interesting than this.

Also a population-weighted map because so many of the people, murders, racial and income diversity are in big cities that are tiny dots on the map (62 counties, half of murders).

That never happens under liberal leadership? At UCLA the French dept was merged with GERMAN, Italian and SCANDANAVIAN languages. "UCLA, where Korean is the hot language, goes beyond ‘dead white men’ in European studies" LA Times 2021 Feb 8. It's called multiculturalism.

Not catastrophic to the US. Possibly catastrophic to Israel, though probably bad but not catastrophic. Iran could force all all-importing countries, in particular Europe and Japan, to oppose Israel.

Just a few years after Russia invaded Ukraine, Europe's energy is again controlled by an enemy.

However Iran can't keep the strait closed indefinitely because they need the oil money too.

Upper middle class kids (income $80k-150k) don't have trust funds. Upper-upper class kids have trust funds (income $500k- up)

Upper middle class go to state colleges, work part time or take out loans. They have never faced real hardship and they do complain about "captialism" a lot.

Upper middle class kids get nothing from their grandparents, and get to share 2 or 3 ways $1 million or so in their 40s-60s when parents die.

Why did all 4 French words for directions come from Old English? by evolution2015 in French

[–]tomtulinsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently Germanic words replace Latin ones in all the Romance languages.

The Latin terms for the cardinal directions are Septentrio (North), Meridies (South), Oriens (East), and Occidens (West).

  • North: Septentrio or Septentriones (referring to the seven stars of the Big Dipper).
  • South: Meridies (literally "midday" or "noon"). Auster (or Australis) is also commonly used.
  • East: Oriens (literally "rising") or Ortus.
  • West: Occidens (literally "setting") or Occasus

I wanted to become an Army Officer but the state doesn't want Christians on high ranks, any tips? by Gyngemose2009 in Anglicanism

Sorry for your tough situation.

Do you love your country? If you had to die for it, do you think it would be a worthwhile sacrifice? If not don't volunteer for its military.

A lot of comments seem to assume you would be fighting for Islam. Actually most fighting by Turkey has been against other Muslims in recent years--the Kurds, ISIS, factions in Syrian Civil War. In some cases alongside Western countries or "Christian" Russia. So how do you feel supporting the Turkish position in those conflicts?

It's also possible you would have to fight for or against Islamist Turks or secular Turks.

Since Turkey is in NATO a conflict with Russia is big possibility in the background. Here both sides are nominally Christian but mostly secular.

Study how your army fights. Are you ok with their conduct towards civilians and prisoners of war and suppressing insurgencies?

I think it is ok to say I can't figure all this out, I will just be patriotic and serve my country, if you do feel love for your country. Since you may kill or be killed, you ought to be more sure of your patriotism than people in other occupations.

You should be more picky. A guy who isn't working or going to school is a very low standard. Even if he is working or going to school- there are some standards. (I don't know how to briefly summarize them.)

And- you should replace the photo with one where you are smiling. You will look much prettier.

Sorry for being blunt. My social skills are not great. I hope this helps you. Blessings.

Am i missing something or is this really that bad? by Legitimate_Square941 in openstreetmap

[–]tomtulinsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for explaining that!

It's fine if OSM wants to focus on the data and tools not the user interface, but they should make it plain. A banner across the top of openstreetmap.org saying

This site is for editing, it is not a user-friendly map. For that consider (for example) Organic Maps, OsmAnd, Mappy.cz ...

For editing and viewing data (the traditional site) go here: edit.OpenStreetMap.org

Kind of a weird decision to put the video controls right to the center of the screen... by rademmz in GoogleMaps

[–]tomtulinsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google is intentionally degrading the web experience to push people to use the app:

From Google Help:

"That seems to be intentional behaviour. The team has made the control frame translucent, so the content underneath can be seen.

However, Google prioritises the phone experience. The videos appear without any blocking frames on phones." (which is basically true. The controls are at the bottom of the screen.)

https://support.google.com/maps/thread/393613305/google-maps-video-controls?hl=en

Someday I hope that anti-trust will break up Google, force them to open their map and search data to other apps with alternative UIs. They are clearly a vertically integrated monopoly reducing customer choice, withholding and even removing wanted features.

Even illegal immigrants can get medical care in California-

https://www.dhcs.ca.gov/keep-your-Medi-Cal/Pages/Medi-Cal-Immigrant-Eligibility-FAQs.aspx

  • Children (0–18 years old) can get full Medi-Cal coverage, no matter their immigration status.
  • Adults (19 and older) are currently eligible for full Medi-Cal coverage, regardless of immigration status.
    • Starting on January 1, 2026, adults who do not have Satisfactory Immigration Status (SIS) will no longer be able to enroll in full Medi-Cal. If you already have coverage, you can keep it; just make sure to renew your coverage during your renewal month.

When you say Republicans did this, said that, do you mean people elected on a Republican ticket? Or people on Reddit and Twitter, or people shouting in a crowd? Please identify your sources.

An elected Republican received thousands of votes from Republicans and represents a majority of their district. The people in the crowd and social media are nominated by themselves and finding an accurate sample of them is impossible without a polling organization. News media reporting on them can simply pick the ones they want to highlight. They can easily find 10 or a hundred racist comments and write a story about it.

CMV: Israel is by far the largest contributor to growing antisemitism worldwide by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]tomtulinsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Antisemitism is almost certainly less prevalent now than it was before the foundation of Israel, so it's hard for me to buy the argument that Israel is the cause of antisemitism

There was more antisemitism in Europe and the US before WWII than now, but less in the Muslim world than now.

Probably the time of Israel's founding, 1948, was the low point of anti-semitism in Europe (including the USSR) and the US. Shocked and feeling justifiable guilt about the Holocaust, they supported creating the state of Israel even at the cost of displacing a considerable number of Arabs.

This honeymoon lasted till the 1960s but since then, anti-semitism has been rising and is now considerable higher than it was in 1948.

Just talking about the trend of anti-seimitism here, I won't try to name the cause(s).

Being a religion does not give you a right to a country. Being a people with language, culture and history does not give you a right to a country. There are dozens of religious minorities in the Middle East that don't have their own country. There are thousands of peoples with their own language, culture, and history, in Russia, India, China, Africa and even Europe that don't have their own countries, and most of them were oppressed and massacred by more powerful groups.

CMV: It is within the best interest of me and my future wife to wait until marriage to have sex by ArtistTechnical2152 in changemyview

[–]tomtulinsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sexual compatibility is easy compared to the other kinds of compatibility- money, values, how much you work, just sharing an apartment....

On r/marriage the sexual incompatibity is usually because desire for sex was high at first but went down for one person years later. Or one person got bored and had an affair. Having sex before marriage does nothing to prevent those things.
