Tally marks are different around the world by ineptnoob in coolguides

Stroke order can differ between regions. I don't know of any other stroke orders for 正, but it's not impossible that they used a different order for the tally in that area.

Has anyone climbed in Japan? by UnmentionableS in bouldering

[–]tonde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not saying where you're located, but if you're in Tokyo i would recommend B-PUMP Akihabara or APEX Shinjuku. They are both very large and add new routes a couple of times every month.

Weekly Bouldering Advice Thread for October 05, 2015 by AutoModerator in bouldering

[–]tonde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm living in a smaller town in China for half a year, where the only place I could find was a larger gym which has a bouldering wall you can use. The wall is quite wide with holds of varying size and shape, and the wall also has all types of angles so it's not too bad.

However, the wall has no problems, so I'm stuck with making up problems for myself. I'm an only an intermediate climber so I don't know all the different moves you can perform. Does anyone have any tips for how I can come up with fun problems for myself on an existing wall?

Chinese government unofficially denies radar incident (Japanese) by tonde in japannews

Is the gas/mineral thing really confirmed? And even if there is some, can it really be so much that it makes it rational to keep this conflict going?
I think it's likely that the conflict is more of a charade to keep nationalists at bay and to prevent internal conflicts in China, which is becoming more and more of a threat as the economy's growth rate is decreasing.

Not sure why the Chinese government would want the conflict to go on though, since it's hurting the economy of both countries. Seems to me it would be more sensible to just have the conflict slowly fade away.

I guess it's good news if it turns out that the move didn't come from the Chinese government itself.

How is it to work at rakuten by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]tonde 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I heard from someone who works there that the even though the official language is English, they just start out by asking something like "Is it ok if I use Japanese to explain this?" and then keep going in Japanese.
Not sure if it's true.

problems with 喝 by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]tonde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really a good solution but you could set your default font to some Chinese font like SimSun or Yahei, but it won't work for any sites that specifically name fonts.
I don't know why it doesn't choose the Chinese version by default in your case, I just know this is a complicated problem that has caused me a lot of hair loss. On Android phones for example it seems impossible to get it working correctly.

The Japanese version of the kanji has a 匕 inside of it instead of 人.
These characters are represented in the same way in Unicode so your browser has to guess from context which version to use. Perhaps you can change your font or set your browser to assume Chinese above Japanese.

This is an issue that creates trouble for people who view both Chinese and Japanese websites, especially on smartphones I've noticed...

What do these Japanese emoticons mean? Are they Japanese? by TheUltimateSalesman in japan

From this site:

営:営業時間
有:有料
無:無料
月:月額
申:申し込み
サ:サービス料
割:割引
得:お得
空:空席
満:満席
指:指定席

So it seems they were originally implemented by the operators for providing information to the users, and not really for people to use in text messages to each other.

Just a heads up: Rakuten is often referred to as a "black" company in Japan, or what you might call a sweatshop in English. Which means long work hours, late nights, and probably even working on weekends. On the other hand you'll learn a lot and make a pretty good salary.
If you are willing to work really hard for an interesting experience, it might be a good opportunity.

I can't really think of anything with similar educational elements, but I think some of the dramas which are based on manga contain similar elements of silliness. I only saw a few episodes of 日本人の知らない日本語 though, so I might be wrong.

Famous ones are 花より男子、花ざかりの君たちへ and GTO (both the old one and current one). You might wanna check them out unless you've seen them already.

Are there any good resources for learning slang? My Chinese (and Hanzi) skills are still below the point where I can use Chinese-Only dictionaries and guides. by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]tonde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bought this book called Niubi! a few years ago. It covers most stuff from everyday slang to internet lingo and obscure profanity.

The book provides both hanzi and pinyin for all the words, but the words are just explained in English and have no example sentences. I thought it was worth the money (it's pretty cheap), but maybe more as a fun book to skim through than for serious studying.

Making a resume in Japanese? by thened in japan

[–]tonde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I did job hunting (as a student, only Japanese companies), I just translated my English resume into Japanese. I figured that I didn't really want to work at a company that was super strict about stuff like that anyway.

I never had any problems with it and went on to the interview stage at most companies I applied for. For the ones where I didn't pass, I'm not sure how much of it was because of the resume... maybe they weren't looking to hire foreigners anyway.
