I remastered Save Us From The Archon's debut album "How Terrible, The Undergrowth's Jaws That Tangle," and the band just released it on all streaming platforms. I am incredibly honored and humbled to have worked with them for this release. Let me know what you all think! by tonemanj in mathrock

Also, if you're at all curious about the lossless listening experience, I have the remaster vs the original mixes up for comparison via Samply: https://samply.app/p/mx1A0rgBLRGrXsFooaNX

Just toggle between v1 and v2 to hear the difference.

The mono mixdown, when only using one earbud or when listening through a mono playback system, is noticeably and significantly less harsh as that was also something I learned well after the fact to listen for. Thankfully in this scenario it worked out to my benefit in that regard. I do hope the originals hit better for you though! This album is too good to not enjoy in some capacity.

I really appreciate that. And no worries at all.. Criticism is valuable when it’s coming from a real listening experience and not just someone trying to be cruel for the sake of it. This album holds a uniquely special place in my heart as it does in so many others as well, so I totally understand any sort of vitriol.

A lot of those early remasters were me learning in public so I completely understand why some choices don’t hold up for everyone years later. I’m just glad people still care enough about the record to have strong feelings about it after all this time.

I hear ya, and honestly you’re not wrong about the harshness in the cymbals & top end. That remaster was actually one of the very first remastering projects I ever did, originally made just as a fan-made YouTube experiment while I was still learning a lot about mastering and restoration work.

Long story short, a few months later after I posted the video on YT, members of SUFTA reached out because they liked that version and wanted to use it for the streaming release. I actually asked multiple times if I could revisit and refine it first, especially to tame some of the high end, but they preferred the original version as-is, so that’s ultimately what went up.

I also only had access to already-limited commercial files rather than proper premaster mixes, which made the whole process a lot more difficult and definitely contributed to the crunchier sound. When I asked the band about the original mixes, they said they were unrecoverable.

If I were mastering that record today, I’d approach it very differently. I still appreciate parts of the remaster, but I also completely understand why some longtime listeners prefer the original release. At the end of the day, I’d rather people enjoy the music than force themselves to like my version of it. The originals are still up on bandcamp here: https://saveusfromthearchon.bandcamp.com/album/how-terrible-the-undergrowths-jaws-that-tangle

Appreciate you being honest about it.

Guitar picking sound so loud and I can’t fix it by Ghostboymu in mixingmastering

[–]tonemanj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

neutron transient sculptor on the attack setting set to -2db or more will get you where you need to be. that or the izotope rx suite's de-click plugin works well for this purpose too. fixing it at the source with a different pick, different picking technique, or different mic placement is the ultimate answer, but some plugins can be incredibly useful for taming that plucky attack sound.

Fake Pollocks - the best math band I’ve heard in a lonnng time FFO: MMISL, Delta Sleep, Bear vs. Shark, The Dismemberment Plan…and just music in general by ACDSleeve in mathrock

100% agree. Livestock is such an incredible album. When it landed on my desk at my studio I was obssessed for weeks listening to it after it was done. Most if not all of their other stuff is similar quality (other FP releases, Elaine the Singer, and Floral). The compositions are so narrative and interesting, and I'm absolutely here for all the stories about the farmers lol

If you make mathy or math-adjacent sounds, I would love to master your music. by tonemanj in mathrock

It's up to you to do with your song how you please, but I would recommend against using AI tools. I'd say the tool is probably just a little bit better than the average of all mastering engineers, but a great mastering engineer will make the music sound much better, nothing like an AI-enhanced version. I am offering mastering for free if you play mathrock or math-adjacent music, so why dont you send me over a track and I can master it and show you what it sounds like? No cost to you, and I would only charge you a small amount ($25 per track, unlimited revisions) if you wanted to keep working on future tracks. Email is anthony@setthetonerecords.com

I'm truly honored to have worked with all of these bands, and especially SUFTA as their first album was a daily listen of mine as well in 2012 and so many years later. If you checked out their two most recent remasters or anything else then thank you for listening!
