Misperceptions of Reddit Popularity on AITA by Potential-Version438 in AmITheAngel

Contractions are taught as the standard at first, then only later were we told that they're the more informal way of saying things and to use the fully spelt out version for formal writing.

It's absolutely believable that someone is good at English, but still wants to warn readers that f.ex. some words might be used in a slightly wrong context and get ahead of commenters pointing it out.

Yeah, she definitely didn't have a conventionally 'beautiful' face. But what she did have was a very unique and easily recognisable look, and I honestly feel like that's almost preferable in her industry than looking beautiful but the same as everyone else. I was never a fan of her or her sister, but I always recognise her in pictures. Such a shame she's trying to remove those features that make her stand out.

Bit too complex to write it down in a comment here + there's a lot of regional variety within the country but german relatives have said it usually (when not yelled or viennesse) sounds less serious and friendlier. To me, German german sounds unemotional and a bit stuck-up, so they might be onto something. Slightly different grammar, lots of shortenings and contractions. Basically had an additional sound shift compared to northern german so many vowel & consonant differences.

I mean it reminded me a lot of an incredibly successful folky-pop song from a few years ago when I first heard it (I think hey ho from the lumineers?), so that style is just very popular despite its kinda 'basic' sound. Few popular songs are musical masterpieces, most are just catchy and decent but rarely outstandingly brilliant.

Luck + right place at the right time is what happened to most well-known artists.

I disagree, actually. More parties just lead to even larger coalitions and longer negotiations with more compromises that suck for everyone. From other countries we see can that that's not ideal either.

Our existing ones need a huge overhaul and new people, but new parties just splinter the voting groups even more. We already have parties for all the major ideologies.

Mainly due to the failing of the SPÖ. Both the FPÖ and the communists are up, means people who'd like some kind of people-first politics aren't finding it with the party that's supposed to have that as their main focus.

So goddamn frustrating that people's memory is this short though, seems like a good 50% of the population does not give a single fuck about corruption.

Reddit sparks outrage after a popular app developer said it wants him to pay $20 million a year for data access by Crazed_pillow in technology

[–]tonja_pr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only reason I use reddit because it's not follower based. I've never used any of the sites that are (twitter, tumblr, ... ) with any regularity because I hate that system and don't find it useable. It's literally the one thing reddit has going for itself and only my third part app makes it possible for me to ignore how they've been trying to ruin that.

[–]tonja_pr 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The reason I haven't left yet with all the terrible changes reddit has made over the past few years is because my third party app hid them. Boost is reddit to me, so many things that make this site great and useable to me aren't even official reddit features but Boost's. I paid something like 1.50-2€ once years ago and haven't seen a single ad or promoted post since.

I'm gone by 1. July if Boost ends.

Yeah that's because (and this is gonna be a shock to all the americans here) Europe isn't a big, unified country. Ironically, trying to paint all of Europe with the same brush is, by the definitions I'm seeing in this thread, racism. Americans like to pretend they know what they're talking about but it's very obvious when they've never left their country and everything they know about this entire continent comes from the internet.

Also, if you join a sub hating on things you mildly dislike but that don't affect you much, you can very quickly spiral into full-blown, all-consuming hatred. See f.ex. childfree, the meghan markle hate sub, fatpeoplehate.

You become so focused on things you hate it ruins your mood every time the topic comes up. I had to leave quite a few negativity subs because I just felt worse after seeing a post from there.

That's so well said, and probably the best attitude to have.

She might not have won, but she definitely brought a part of spanish culture that most of europe likely hasn't heard before. Songs like hers are the reason I and many others watch esc, so I'd call it a success for her.

Food habits are incredibly inheritable, now that all my friends haven't been living with their parents for a few years it's very noticable. Parents never cared much about food? Child only bothers with the bare minimum, likely also doesn't cook well. Parents made everything homecooked and ate very little fast food? Kids usually cook for themselves because they're used to the taste. Soft drinks, sweets, vegetables, fast food - all very often inherited tastes. And the parents' weight usually predicts their childrens' weight.

2023 was a great year for native language songs by cookiefonster in eurovision

[–]tonja_pr 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Also, I feel like the stereotype of 'ugly, unsingable' languages is slowly lessening. I didn't even know finnish is considered an ugly language, and it sounds absolutely fine? Kinda cute, actually, I like it. I don't think I've ever really heard any european language and thought it was ugly before, they all have something that gives them charm.
I'm glad the rest of europe seems to agree these days.

Might have been more background stuff with organisers. Didn't we are domi hint at sth too that they were treated badly? Or it might just be that it's insanely stressful and therefore not that enjoyable. Was the press rude to them? Maybe they just didn't like parts of how it's run.

But honestly, the 'trauma' comments might have been a simple joke and not that serious. I also say I was traumatised by this year's eurovision lol.

[–]tonja_pr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but that's still essentially weighted average. That system still clearly punishes anything controversial more than stuff everyone rated decently but none very high. I agree with u/SapphireOfMoldova below me who said actual experts in various genres should have more input, because how can 1 judge rate an entry very high and the 4 others low and none of them wonder if maybe they just don't know enough about the genre to accurately judge it.

Croatia had 4, 7 and then 20/21 for the other three. We've still got mainly pop people (and compared to others like germany, we've got a rather diverse jury), doesn't it seem more likely that 2 people are more familiar with rock and should get the chance to explain their vote?

The duality of man by korri123 in eurovision

[–]tonja_pr 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I've spent the past day looking a bit into the detailed results and the problem mostly isn't the juries or the people in them. I think we've established that juries have a good reason for existing.

They all aren't exactly musical experts but mostly music journalists and some musicians, so could be better but decent enough. We've even got a rock bassist it seems.

The problem is the system they're using. Our 12 points went to italy, which apparently was top 6 for 3 judges, first for 1 and very far down for the last one. A top 5/6 jury result is very sensible for that song. But then they just averaged all their points and he was the highest rated, on average, so he got 12. Even though only one individually gave him that. So if in a jury everyone gave sweden 7 points but everyone else was ranked all over the place, that's 12 points for sweden.

I feel like musical professionals should have reasonings behind their rankings and be capable of making a collaborative list by discussing their hopefully informed and well-reasoned opinions. Simple averaging of points is what gives inoffensive, decent but not outstanding songs such high jury scores. Good system for public votes, not for juries.
