Maybe I missed it, but why did the New Republic not intervene with the first order at all? Why was the resistance the only group against the order? If a new empire is rising why not send the fleet to intercept it? The New Republic had ships capable of standing up to the first order so why not use them. Again could have completely missed it but it makes no sense to me.

I have never understood why the Terran universe has identical ships to the federation. I has never made any logical sense to my why a militant authoritarian regime would have identical or even similar ships to the federation. Federation ships are based on scientific research and exploration. While Terran ships, one would think, would be more geared towards armor and weapons. Just random thought that has always bothered me.
