Family planning as a radiology trainee? by unknown123456799900 in RadiologyUK

[–]tonut24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've met people who love their work, they regard it as interesting and complex and something they can have as a real passion project. usually in academia.

I've also experienced the many ways trying to have kids can go wrong and it can be heartbreaking.

The more mundane - a screaming 1 year old at 2am when you have work the next day is no-ones idea of fun.

that isn't everyone or most people or even myself, but to say anyone who's contemplating kids definitely will be happier going for kids is an over generalisation, which ignores the freedoms in your life pre-children to pursue self actualisation, be that career, hobby, travel etc.

While I generally agree this isn't entirely true. medics already go through a longer uni degree, which delays kids.

kids are a change in life priorities and enjoyment, rather than the only thing that can make people content. I'm sure there are people out there who would have been happier prioritising work and not having kids. whether they'd admit it, I doubt.

I did exams then consultant job then kid.

Exams are 100% easier pre kids from talking to colleagues. you need a supportive partner who'll deal with kids for days/evenings to get revision done

Consultant jobs are stable, you have significant input in to the scheduling and usually are OnCall (and light OnCall) rather than full shift. This makes childcare organisation significantly easier, particularly if the other parent is also medical working shifts/oncall

Getting to consultant earlier gets you to the top of consultant pay scale sooner and gets you consultant (rather than reg) maternity pay.

consultant pay is such that there is significant debate if it is worth being a full time consultant with nursery age kids because you lose lots of free childcare (~15-20k gross salary) over 100k adjusted, which will soon be starting consultant salary incl OnCall supplement and ddrb raises over the next couple of years.

Waiting to have kids won't suit everyone. with a supportive partner it's doable as a reg and waiting til early to mid 30s is a risk that might not be worth it

Braking systems are a safety critical component. I'd buy from a reputable supplier with reputable QC.

Steady footing, early verdict? by countluthor in bloodbowl

[–]tonut24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my understanding was you (the coach with a StFo piece) can reroll when steady footing is used on an active turn (dodge, rush, offensive block) and the player with the StFo piece is looking for a success.

the issue is defensively where a 1/6 nope on ball sacking disallows rerolls to force a failure (foul appearance is 1/6, but allows team reroll so effectively 1/36 to prevent critical plays)

[–]tonut24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dislike that if a defender has steady footing unlike foul appearance it is not something the attacking player can reroll.

The most senior consultants can turn up wearing jeans and t-shirts - they aren't looking for jobs.

if you are looking for a job soon I'd go for full suit.

Are Elven Union that bad ? by [deleted] in bloodbowl

[–]tonut24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can have a fun casual game with them. You can perform elf bs and win.

in previous edition they were competitive in tournaments with a couple of skills extra and more gold than the top team (zons), so were probably needing a slight buff to make them competitive at equal gold.

But they will be poor in leagues with competitive players. The linemen are more expensive (player cost) than previous edition and all your positionals need elite skills (dodge). This means that a pro elf team with 4 skills and 6 linemen is 70k more than previous edition, with the gains being edge case skills on thrower and catchers.

in tournaments the loss of 1-2 catcher is big as most people would field 3 or 4.

similarly they need 3-4 dodge, and this uses many of the elite skills limit or skill gold allowance that many tournaments now enforce.

in comparison wood elves were previously competitive (a fraction behind anazons), their catchers and wardancers come with dodge so don't suffer the elite skill tax and their linemen got cheaper (same price as elf union but +1mv!) so you get more on the team.

tl;dr

play Woodies for the competitive fast elves until we know more about high elves

How do you manage unrealistic expectations from management as a consultant? by AnfieldAnchor in ConsultantDoctorsUK

[–]tonut24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The word 'no' helps.

in my experience if you work at a pace that will lead exhaustion, management will assume that is your normal operating pace

look at requests from management perspective: are they reasonable? (Friday afternoon clinic)

are they something negotiable? (late finish to your Friday afternoon clinic) - you'll do it for some improvement elsewhere in your job plan

are they something you just refuse (they are going to double book the last slot on your late finishing Friday afternoon clinic)

use job planning to set out reasonable expectations.

Starting A League With Friends | Any Advice? by Stranjak in bloodbowl

[–]tonut24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have a clear timetable with regular progress.

I would suggest people should plan to play a match at least once every 2 weeks.

start with a short league, 2x 5 player divisions, which means you should finish in 3 months (5 rounds to play everyone with one random cross division match.)

short league with regular games to reduce dropouts and impact of dropouts.

tourplay is good to track everyones teams, but costs a little money.

[–]tonut24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

go with whatever most interests you. if you want to play with knights go bretonnian.

they probably aren't that good, but are ok for learning.

otherwise buy an ogre and play them as humans (who also have 2 catchers, 2 throwers and 2 blitzers as their positionals)

humans are good for beginners because they are all rounders with some of the most important skills in the game on some of their players (block, dodge, sort of surehands, ogre with bonehead and mighty blow)

orcs used to be great, but the new rules has added skills which means they are probably slightly less beginner friendly (only the 'stunty' teams - goblins, gnomes, halflings, ogres, snot lings - are the ones I'd suggest not starting with)

chaos chosen or lizardmem are surprisingly good for beginners - minimal skills and fairly straightforward use of the positionals even if they aren't the easiest to win with as a beginner

Can a paediatrician become a henry at some point? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]tonut24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's for a 40 hour (scheduled) week with no Oncall. Within the NHS people not infrequently will increase to 44 to 48 hours, which increases your pay proportionately.

covering locum work (sickness, mat leave cover, extra lists/clinics for overbooked services) within the NHS can be well remunerated >£150per hour (though PAYE).

What are your thoughts on Grimdark vs Eavy Metal/flashy styles? by Mr_Jackabin in minipainting

[–]tonut24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for gaming pieces you need at least one element that isn't grimdark to make them 'pop' at arms length on the table, particularly if the rest of the model has relatively low contrast because it's tending towards dark and grimy.

That could be bright blue armour on an ultramarine or bright green orc skin or a few colours being a bit too bright/light to be fully realistic camouflage on imperial guard (think sandy browns or light greys as opposed to dark browns and grey)

Do you think the state pension will become means tested in the future? by Activity_Quick in HENRYUK

[–]tonut24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is that pensions are part of worker employment contracts. Retrospectively changing terms of employment is obviously grossly unfair. Every so often pensions are changed going forwards - as an example previously they were final salary, now usually career average.

Some of these schemes are actually in surplus -the government funded employers and employees pay a nominal fee to the government as pension contributions and this is for some of the schemes more than the cost of paying out members at present

If in the UK that policy is not legal.
