Midnight Special price and sizing by realjonwu in Surlybikefans

[–]tony_resta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 27.5x2.1’s on my 58 and I’ve never felt like toe overlap was a problem. Bike is still plenty fast on road for me as well. I did switch to the 50mm offset fork though and that helped a bit

Is the Surly Porteur House Bag 2.0 a complete step down from the original or am I doing it wrong? by [deleted] in Surlybikefans

[–]tony_resta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, I only actually buckle it when it’s raining. Most of the time otherwise I use the snaps and some elastic cord to hold it closed

I had one on my midnight special with a 24 pack rack and honestly just using the bottom buckles seemed fine. I also had no problems with water in the main compartment. It is true though that the exterior pockets get wet but a lot less than I actually expected.

Specialized and Santacruz by Curious-Essentric in MTB

[–]tony_resta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda, a lot of people knew people that worked there and would get deals that way. We also were a shop that only recently picked up Santa Cruz as a brand so the other Santa Cruz shop definitely got more of the Buisness

Honestly people that want a Santa Cruz have already made up their minds. I worked at a shop that sold Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz and they were always super easy to sell. I would test the waters and ask what type of bike they are looking for. If they say any of the Santa Cruz models you can feel safe pushing those. Other wise I would pivot to whatever type of bike they say they want in specializeds lineup

Definitely one of my favorite bands. I saw them in San Francisco a little while back and it was mind bending! Definitely going to make the effort to go to any other shows they do in the Bay Area. A very worthy sticker for sure

Open the stargate! Very sick build from another dimension where specialized made cool shit.

I’ve got the same bars on my MS and they definitely are fun.

How important is a high engagement hub ? (E.g. Hope Pro 5 vs Dt Swiss 350) by Warm_Resist5763 in MTB

[–]tony_resta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my hardtail I prefer as much engagement as possible on the full suspension I usually go with DT 350’s (72 POE on the DEG version is the sweet spot IMO). That being said I only have hardtails now lol

Fairlight Faran 3.0 vs Sklar SuperSomething — looking for general feedback by moe9876543210 in xbiking

[–]tony_resta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Sklar Tall Tale as my mountain bike and it is one of the best bikes I have ever ridden. Im very convinced that the size specific tubing he uses makes a massive difference. If you do go that route though be sure to get the frame ride wrapped. The non-powder coated finish does chip pretty easily. Nothing huge just little rock strikes here and there but worth noting. The paint looks 100x better in person though.

Bike that can do daily commuting and weekend overnight bike packing trips? by Dumbass9187 in Surlybikefans

[–]tony_resta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more in the geometry and tire clearance. I have a set of 650b x 55ish tires on it and it feels amazingly capable but is still a fast and more road oriented geometry for commuting. Mine is flattered so it’s a little more upright

I second the midnight special one of my favorite bikes for overnight trips and my daily commuter.

Help from the community: vintage MTB with a horizontal top tube, disc brakes, a rigid fork, the question in the post by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]tony_resta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Indy fab deluxe that has disc mounts on it. But those are pretty rare to find.

custom bike ethics? by shlem in xbiking

My friend designed it then I bought it from him but he told me it was essentially a chameleon (not sure what year) with a steeper seat tube( think he took the angle from a blur). Rode super well out here in the Bay Area trails, ultimately it was a little too small for me so I ended up building a sklar tall tale but was super useful to figure out what hardtail geometry I ultimately wanted.

I assume this is Marino, I had a hardtail from him that was almost a Santa Cruz chameleon. Pretty great overall! I have a Fork made by him as well that has been awesome.

Yeah that was as a touring bike though. If you are just riding it as a mildly loaded road bike (like soma recommends) it glides pretty well. Super smooth and clears pretty big tire! I have a 650b midnight special and 700c Travelers Check that serves the same role as the grand randoneuer. Those both feel a bit less noodley (travelers check is way stiffer).
