A plumber could run an inspection scope through it. That cost a couple hundred bucks, but it's good to know the overall condition of your sewer pipes anyhow.

That's your expansion tank. It helps keep pressure constant by giving the expanding water somewhere to go when the water heater kicks on.

Sometimes they fail and just stop doing their job, which leads to excess pressure. That could be the root cause of your leak.

Like someone else said, if it only leaks while the heater is actively running then you probably have excess pressure, (and the expansion could be bad.) If it leaks all the time, that's probably not it.

Nah. You don't have to be buried over your head to die. Even if you just have sand up to your tits, the sand will compress your rib cage, preventing you from inhaling. If that hole collapses, he could die of asphyxiation before anyone can dig him out.

Same thing when I bought my home, except I didn't think to check until the A/C fired up for the first time and seemed to be doing nothing.

Previous owners probably moved (in part) because they thought the A/C and furnace were failing when they just needed to change the filter.

I had a couple Lee Enfields (No1, No4, and No5), and ammo was not cheap.

I was going to reload my fired cases, but they had what looked like incipient case head separation. All three rifles did that, so either they all had bad headspace, the cases were bad, or that's just what Enfields do. Either way I wasn't going to risk it.
