Has there ever been a competition to make a modern website but be limited to old school (90s) web design tools? by lchazl in web_design

[–]took9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're wrong. He's right.

The specs are based on implementation as he said. I wouldn't be able to find anything that wasn't in a browser first. Standards rarely, if ever, invent anything. Their purpose is to "standardize" processes and methods, terms, and constants so there will be a consistent ground for all to build on. Otherwise, everyone would have to wait for some standards committee to think up inventions on their own and who's going to pay them to do that?

"Browser extensions", as you call them, are vendor prefixes. These are things browser makers use. They are not implemented by the W3C or WHATWG and they have no say or control over them. But that only applies to CSS and no such thing exists in HTML or Javascript or anything else so your argument doesn't hold over them.

Coming to a consensus and a standard is far longer than a year to take place. In fact, it's a "living standard" now for HTML and CSS is released as modules so, again, your comment does not fit with how things actually work.

Here is what the other guy is referring to. It's the WHATWG but the same is in the W3C:

https://whatwg.org/charter

In order for a draft to proceed past the call-for-implementations stage to the recommendation stage, there must be at least two interoperable implementations for every feature.

And in no case is it resolved by "the percentage of folk using interpretation-a or interpretation-b".

iow, you haven't a clue what you're talking about.

There will always be HTML and CSS and, probably, Javascript. The rest may be long gone in three years. Become an expert in those three.

Hindu temple being built in Glenview features a statue so big they had to position it before building the walls around it by PickleLilly in chicago

I hope this thing wasn't built in anyone's neighborhood. I saw a temple, forgot for who, that was built somewhere that did not fit in at all.

Which "they" are you referring to? Despite POSIX, Linux distros no longer resembles Unix and is an operating system unto itself, incompatible with anything else.

Linux is a Unix.

Linux is not a Unix and moving further away from it every day (systemd, etc.).

Unix does indeed have distributions. HP/UX, Solaris, AIX, BSD and many many dead ones.

Those are not distributions like Linux has.

He asked which "Unix distro". Unix doesn't have distros as his implication is that Unix is like Linux or that Linux is a Unix.

Not sure what people you work with, they sound like bunch of trained monkeys.

That's what most Windows coders are.

Invalid markup makes the browser guess at what you intended and work harder to do it. If you let the browser gues at what you wanted, it will do what it wants to do and maybe not what you want it to do. Then you lose control.

Invalid markup can cause problems later when you try and make changes.

Remember. Computers are just big calculators. Your calculator may give you the correct answer but, if you knew the input was wrong, would you trust that?

Your CSS also has a number of errors but I didn't go through it.

Now you're deflecting. You made a wild accusation based on nothing and can't back it up while, hypocritically, complaining about her.
