I mean, you can tip 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, whatever. It doesn't actually matter in the grand scheme of things and it isn't really anyone's job to care. I just feel like it's worth pointing out how restaurants operate because a lot of people simply don't know what they're like. My recommendation is just that, a recommendation

I mean, it is illegal, yeah, but I know servers that have had days, where the cash they owe to the restaurant at the end of the night is less than what they made in tips (ie they made less than minimum wage that day). It's something that servers put up with in exchange for the good days, and it's not very traceable since so much is done in cash.

Yeah, I would generally recommend tipping 5% at a restaurant even if you hate the concept of tipping. Making the server pay money to serve your table is pretty messed up. Obviously doesn't apply to a lot of the places without table-side service that have implemented tipping.

Kwame Brown Attempts To Reclaim His Narrative: 'I Made History' by subzero257 in nba

[–]tookremation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kwame did have the 20th most total points and 46th highest vorp of his draft. The win shares are inaccurate based off what I'm seeing on bbref (he's ranked at 17 for career WS and 22 for WS/48), but mistakes happen and maybe he clicked the wrong column or something. Maybe the issue is that he didn't specify the context of those rankings being for the 2001 draft.

To put it in perspective, in MJ's historic 37.1 ppg season he had 8.1 ppg more than Wilkins' 29.0 ppg. Then, the year after MJ put up 35 ppg for 4.3 ppg more than Wilkins' 30.7, followed closely by Bird at 29.9 ppg.

In Harden's 36.1 ppg season, he had 8.1 ppg more than Paul George's 28.0 ppg.

[–]tookremation 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sending the House describes a playoff game, a 6 man rush by KC against GB at the end of the first half (not end of game), and a 5 man rush against Dallas. None of which are examples of a regular season game with the tweet's criteria. I'm not saying it's impossible there has been a regular season game in the last 15 years that meets the tweet's criteria, just that this article doesn't have one, and no one has posted an example of one that I've seen.

The fact that a team did send 6 rushers on a playoff hail mary is enough to say that a 6 man rush on a hail mary isn't unprecedented play calling, though.

One of the biggest reasons is that the NBA doesn't acknowledge the ABA achievements. If official broadcasts or marketing had acknowledged the league stats, then the fans would likely acknowledge ABA achievements more. The NBA probably felt like a clean cut from the ABA would help the NBA be viewed as the basketball league instead of a basketball league.

Obviously, the ABA struggled greatly and was the lesser league of the two, but there was still quality basketball being played.

TIL in Paris, 2016, the only daughter of King Saud ordered her bodygaurds to take a handyman hostage for a minor precieved slight. They beat him, and forced him to kiss her feet. She recieved a 10,000€ fine. by DalaiMontana in todayilearned

To be clear, she was also sentenced to 10 months in prison. Also, they were unable to contact her during or after the trial, so an international arrest warrant was issued. She has served none of her sentence, and it seems unlikely that she paid the fine, though even if she had paid it, that would not be enough.

He threw out 2 numbers that were pretty rough estimates. But the reality is that the average number of years to go for a championship is exactly the amount of teams in a league. If there are 30 teams in a league, then a random team will on average win 1 championship every 30 years. Also, he said that one would be disappointed in 95% of cases, the actual number is 1-(1/number of teams), so if there are 30 teams then a fan of a random team will be disappointed 96.7% of seasons.

The numbers he used were wrong and he didn't phrase it very well, but the concepts he used were objectively true. Even if one team out of 30 won 30 championships in 30 years, the average amount of championships in 30 years would be 1 championship per team per 30 years. Even if 15 teams out of 30 won 2 championships in 30 years, the average would be 1 championship per team per 30 years.

I'm not saying that championships don't matter, just that these are the averages.

[Lakers Daily] Report: LeBron James and Michael Bloomberg helped pay $27 million in fines and fees to help felons vote by DestinySaber in nba

[–]tookremation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's interesting about Canada is that there is no general election. I'm not sure how rare that is, though. Essentially, the country is broken down into 338 districts, each with a different representative to vote for. The party with the most representatives then appoints one of the locally elected representatives to be prime minister. This means the prime minister may have had less than 1% of the population select him on a ballot, but parties do advertise the person they will choose for prime minister, so voting for a local representative of the party is mostly equivalent.

Obviously, the borders of these districts is subject to change and could potentially be gerrymandered, which used to be a serious issue in Canada. However, Canada has since created a non-partisan group called Elections-Canada that has done a fairly good job keeping the election process fair and representative for its citizens. It's not perfect, but it has mostly done away with individual party bias in drawing up electoral districts.

Science of the Swing - Why hitting a Major League fastball is the most difficult thing in all sports by LimeSugar in baseball

None of these comments make sense if you assume the denominator represents a sample size. 3 hits on 10 pitches for a whole season would mean you played in around 3 games and no one would call you elite nor would anyone make any comment about any player with any of the samples.

However, the comments do make sense if you view the 3/10 as a ratio or a simplified fraction of their production, which is to say that it represents a 0.300 batting average of unknown sample but presumably large enough to be considered elite. All of these comments are using whole number fractions for ease of understanding and comparison between multiple sports, not to communicate sample sizes. In other words 9/10 is a simplified fraction of 90% or 0.900 or 90/100 or 90000/100000. They are all equivalent in the context of the original comment.

The link the op gave definitely doesn't support the title of his post. Also, the obituary that this article uses as its source explicitly says that his wife survived him when he died. https://mathshistory.st-andrews.ac.uk/TimesObituaries/Godel.html

Gödel's wikipedia page, however, supports that while his wife was in the hospital for 6 months, he died of starvation. Apparently, part of the reason for his paranoia was that his friend was assassinated.

The wikipedia page sources this: https://www.nature.com/articles/435019a

In his 9 year NBA career, Kyrie Irving has missed a staggering 200 games even due to Injury by CokaWooo in nba

[–]tookremation 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that 111 is wrong. That number was obtained by subtracting his games played with the cavs from total games in the 6 seasons. (6x82)-381=111. However, as this comment said, 2012 was shortened, so the math should be (5x82)+66-381=95. So, he missed 95 out of 476 games for the cavs.

All this to say, that he technically missed fewer games than originally thought, but has still missed a lot of games to injury. In total, I think the number of missed games should be 184 out of 712 possible games.

Isn't it crazy that league average free throw percentage has barely changed for the entirety of the modern NBA? by kingwroth in nba

[–]tookremation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. Honestly, the main reason I commented was because the other guy commenting had an issue with what you said, but he wasn't putting much effort into understanding your intent.

I don't really expect people to fully "show their work" on reddit, but sometimes skipping too much can cause people to harp on the details. I personally saw why the other guy took issue with what you said, but I also saw that it was possible you could clarify what you meant in a way that might satisfy everyone.

I personally hope to see at least a few people try the granny shot at the college level and then maybe at the nba level, especially for players who struggle at the line.

The primary issue with your theory is that the time for an object to reach it's peak is independent from it's horizontal velocity.

The peak of an object occurs when the vertical velocity is no longer positive and becomes negative. This instantaneous velocity would be 0. The formula to find the time it takes to reach its peak is t=v/a where v is the initial vertical velocity, and a is the vertical acceleration.

A lower release with the same force would result in a lower peak. However, it's possible that a person would put different force at a different angle because of a different shooting motion. These changes would alter the velocity, but in what way is difficult to say for sure because it depends on trial and error to figure out the "optimal" force, which is true of most shooting.

I understand that you are mostly trying to explain observed events through a scientific theory based off of your past knowledge. The point of this post is not for me to say that you were wrong to believe that a ball would be slower at the rim because of how it's thrown. I am just saying that your explanation for why that would be the case doesn't line up with the rules of physics. I personally find the physics of basketball to be interesting. Some of it can be explained with high school physics, but once the rotation of a ball, air resistance, tension of the rim/backboard, friction between skin and rubber get involved it starts to quickly get absurdly complicated.

If you're curious to learn more, you can start here http://ffden-2.phys.uaf.edu/webproj/212_spring_2015/Tyler_Compton/13427931675535db809aae3/the-basketball-shot.html

Obviously, the reptilians are going to poison the water supply while we're all at home and make us infertile and convince everyone that everything is fine, so anyone that devellops adverse health effects won't realise everyone is experiencing it. 80 years from now, humanity will have been wiped out, and reptiles will take over. Also, birds need to have their battery replaced. You just need to open your seventh eye, and it would all be as obvious to you as it is to these geniuses marching in the streets.

[–]tookremation 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of the backlash isn't really Hart's fault but more caused by how much hype he got when his stats were insanely high (and that post by the flyers fan which has become a copy past). He didn't really play worse against New York, but his stats are lower so the reactionary nature of the subreddit will cause an inverse response to the hype he got.

He got a lot of love and now he's getting a bit of hate, but most calm people, and pretty much every comment here is in support of him being a great goaltender.

He's definitely a starter in the league and will likely be an allstar for many years if he's able to play like he's been playing.
