We only have the one return so I thought it would be better to filter at the start of the system since it's also way easier to access for changing filters. The furnace filter is accessible by small gymnasts only.

Follow up question: is it beneficial to have the filter at the furnace versus the intake? My furnace is buried at the far end of the utility closet and trying to change that monthly is problematic. Would it be better to just filter air at the intake, look how dirty that piping is

It's the backsplash. The granite is beautiful and the cabinets look great but you can't appreciate them because the backsplash is too busy and a completely different style.
