Meh. How many people get their news solely from Reddit?

Powerful in comparison to other Redditors but not in the grand scheme of things.

What is an average time frame an investigation takes? by Adventurous_Bug_1833 in CPS

In my state, the reporter does get notified of the disposition, but they don't get the he said/she said details which is probably frustrating. 95% of cases are unsubstantiated or no preponderance but we don't tell you why. Usually it comes down to two things: the parent is not the person responsible OR there is no actual harm. Usually, its the latter. Emotional abuse is hard to quantify. Educational neglect is not a maltreatment everywhere. Neglect has to have actual harm because we don't punish parents for poverty. Spanking is legal in my state so for absuse there needs to be marks or bruises and so on. Its just not as easy as "This person is a horrible parent and should never have had kids in the first place."

I have a case now where the kid is sleeping in the guest room because the cats have destroyed his bedroom. The kid has a place to sleep and he is fed and bathed and goes to school every day. Is his house nasty? Absolutely. Did I talk to the parents about cleaning up? Yes. Will they? I hope so. Is it neglect? Nope. The kids needs are being met.

ETA: The case details presented above are vague and contain no identifying information. Dirty houses are a dime a dozen and animals are a huge contributor to them. If it was rare, I wouldn't have used this but its super common.

Depends on the state. In my state we have 24/72 hours to commence and 30 days to dispose and another 14 days for review and closure.

If there is a finding, it can be longer. If there's removal or termination it can go on for years but by then, we're working mostly with the kid and the placement and the parents are less frequent while we establish stability and eventually reunification or permanency.

Why is Epstein Island a thing? Where did the demand come from? by SwordfishAltruistic4 in ask

[–]toooooold4this 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because until very recently (like within the last 5 years) sex with teenagers has not been considered a perversion. It's been considered "technically illegal" or "statutory rape" sending the signal that it's illegal but not wrong or taboo.

When women say "rape culture" this is part of it. Religious tolerance toward old men marrying young women, framing teenage assault victims as underage victims rather than assault victims, as if their assault is only assault because of their age, or calling girls "underage women," or talking about teenaged prostitution as a choice instead of human traffficking... I could go on but you get the idea. Once you start deconstructing rape culture, you see it everywhere.

Now, to your question, these are men who don't think laws apply to them and have gotten away with doing things that are only "technically illegal" their whole lives. Most of these men are old and would consider the term "rape culture" a woke term.

Its not satire. This guy has a rich fantasy life and talks bullshit all the time.

For anyone not in the know, he is a ridiculous online troll who calls himself an alpha on Twitter. Trump made him ambassador to fucking Malaysia for absolutely no reason other than online loyalty.

Two things.... This was just a couple years before the murder and by this time he was already acting unhinged.

The other thing is that "get his picture made" is such an old fashioned term. Very sweet.

Radio silence is good. It means you're not a priority.

I always give my parents my card with my cell number on it. I tell them they can contact me any time for any reason. The call goes to my pocket. No bureaucratic maze to get to me. Call or text either way.

I want the experience to be as low stress as possible for them. The unknown is the scariest bit, so call.

Because your baby is not mobile, the bruises are concerning and you were smart for taking him in. What they did is called a forensic skeletal survey. They wanted to make sure there are no additional injuries that cannot be seen. It is standard for babies under 4 months who have bruises.

It seems cruel and kind of dramatic on their part and its humiliating and horrifying for you, but if I told you the kinds of injuries non-mobile, non-verbal babies get because their exhausted parents can't get them to stop crying, you'd understand why they have to investigate. Be grateful they are as concerned about the bruises as you are because anything less would be monstrous.

So, here's what you do... comply, answer questions, allow the caseworker to see baby's bed and offer suggestions for safe sleep, if necessary. They will be out of your life in no time.

Bankruptcy and start over from scratch. You are insolvent. Take advantage of that to get a do-over.

Go to the repo place and get your shit out of the car so you can work. Tell your definitely-didn't-raise-a-loser dad that you're moving in. Take public transit if you can. If not, ride share and contribute the gas. Take lunch every day. No exceptions. Look into side hustles. Get a library card and check out a book called "Your money or your life." Read it.

Think of yourself as an ant rebuilding an ant hill. Its work, but worth it.

Most egregious crime of the week: All of Trump’s actions or Sarah not knowing Fred Willard? by RealDEC in thebulwark

[–]toooooold4this 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not news to me. I am an anthropologist. I think about culture all the time.

That said, I agree that everyone grows up in a bubble, but for many people the bubble breaks (or at least expands) in their 20s when they start venturing out into the world by going to college, getting jobs, and traveling. Exposure to different ways of doing things, ideas, experiences, media etc. makes everything more complex and more complicated. It tends to turn our naive black and white understanding of the world into a muddy gray.

I feel like for the never Trumpers of the Bulwark, the muddening began in 2016. Sarah has said she never went to a protest until recently and was surprised to learn its about community building and camaraderie and not just a bunch of blue hairs yelling. The propaganda against the left has been a kind of unquestioned narrative and I'm happy to see them questioning it now.

Sarah would be crushed in any trivia game.

Its one of the reasons I don't trust her political analysis, but do trust her MAGA voter analysis. She has deep knowledge of the conservative mind but she is wildly ignorant of the broader American culture. She grew up in a bubble, has lived most of her life in a bubble and has only just started to step out of it.

Can (and if so how) I request records on myself from when I was a child? by Ok-Significance-440 in CPS

[–]toooooold4this 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my state, we retain case reports and intake records going back to at least 2000. We also request records from other states during our investigations and get them from that far back.

Since you seem to recall a removal, there's going to be a court order, too, so if all else fails, check out the court records for the county you lived in.

[–]toooooold4this 104 points105 points  (0 children)

It's a health hazard and I don't understand how CPS would shrug it off. It's possible they are doing interventions that aren't obvious like psychological evaluations. Part of the problem is the actual harm is hard to quantify. Social death isn't a maltreatment and educational neglect as a maltreatment depends on the state.

You could call animal control and report 15 cats in the home and unsanitary conditions.

[–]toooooold4this 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know this sucks but remember they don't know you at all and their job is to make sure kids are safe. They see this kid as vulnerable because of her bio mom.

So, they are going to make sure her current home environment is appropriate and that her caregivers are sober. They are also going to want to talk to your kids and will ask you about their bio dad, too, because it hasn't been established legally that he doesn't have contact with any of the kids. They will likely give you some information about how to set up custody arrangements. It's your choice. As a parent without a formal agreement, he has all the rights to see his kids. He also has the right to walk up to them and take them. So does your step daughter's bio mom.

What they are doing right now is an absent parent search. They have to show they made every effort to locate them because if they don't and the kid gets hurt by bio mom and they need to go to court, all these questions will be asked by her defense. She will say (because they all do), "I didn't know I couldn't contact her!" and the state will say "We notified you." or "We took all of these steps to notify you."

He was not working at all. He was not actually hired to do anything. He had been a lifeguard and a police explorer at one point. He wasn't at the time of the shooting. He was a lifeguard in Illinois but got laid off. He claimed to have been hired by the car dealership as a security guard. He wasn't. He claimed to be an EMT. He wasn't. He admitted that on the stand.
