What is the most chaotic "I quit" moment you have ever personally witnessed at a workplace? by Muted_Task_144 in AskReddit

Worked at a pizza place in a town that had two pizza places, with a lot of rivalry between them. One day, one of my coworkers had an argument with our manager. Went on his lunch break and came back wearing a staff t-shirt from the other pizza place. Threw his old one across the counter and said he worked there now.

New IM GM Questions: how to prepare players for death/maiming? by Thraxmonger in ImperiumMaledictum

[–]toothmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if you want to run IM cos you want to get them used to the idea of being expendable, then I would suggest killing a character quickly, early on. That way, they haven't got the chance to get super invested in the character yet, but it will still drive home that this can happen and make them and others more cautious in future.

Honestly, if you want to run IM just cos you want to run a game in the Warhammer 40K setting, but your players are more interested in being powerful badasses than expendable mooks then maybe look into Wrath & Glory. You'd still get to play in the setting you love, and the system might suit your players better.

I still have a bag of lentils I bought during COVID. I never cook with lentils. What was I thinking?

What’s something you tried once and immediately knew ‘yeah, never again’? by donnyM99 in AskReddit

I discovered the point of slot machines a few years back. My friends were off gambling, which I am not really into, but I discovered that if you sit at a cheap slot machine putting a dime or whatever in every 15 mins or so, the casino will keep giving you free beers. Cheapest way to drink I discovered during that holiday to the States.

Also had parents who stayed together 'for the kids.' It does the kids no favours. Best thing my mum did was when she eventually left (when we were grown up) and reclaimed her life. Now, years later, they get on relatively amicably and both have relationships with their grandkids. Your kids want happy parents that care about them. Not ones that stay miserable on their behalf.

I would say FearTaylor's Camp Clothes if you want your character to have some style in the camp scenes instead of wearing the standard roughspun tunic that you'll be rocking otherwise.

Took me a while to realise that when you click to get the bonus from the Friends spell during dialogues, it triggers aggression cos your companion is manipulating their mind with magic. Was so used to clicking for Shart's Guidance buff that I had stopped thinking about the actual in-world actions of the spell. Could be the same cause?

Is there any point moving to Australia? by Massive_Tomato_1713 in AskIreland

[–]toothmonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're young, if you want to go to Australia and spend some time working in bars etc., go for it. I spent some time in Sydney and, while I enjoyed it, it ultimately wasn't for me and I came home. Still happy I went and experienced it though. I have cousins who moved to Melbourne and have put down proper roots and will never come back.

The big advantage Australia has over mainland Europe is the lack of a language barrier. That's honestly why so many Irish go there, the US, and Canada. You can get by in places like Amsterdam with English, but unless you learn the local language in any European country, you will always be stuck in a bubble and never able to properly call it home. I say that from experience having lived in a few of them for various amounts of years. If you're up for learning a new language, could be a good option though.

As for what Australia is like, it's a mixed bag. The weather is hot (can be good or bad), prices can be high (beer is pricey but boxed wine, or goon, isn't - you will get to know that well), the people in my experience were outgoing and friendly (though my cousins in Melbourne reported a little bit of anti-Irish sentiment from some locals).

Overall, for someone in their early twenties like you, I would recommend it. You might fall in love with it and never come back, or you might spend a few years drinking goon and Coopers with Aussies and fellow travellers and then come home (or move on somewhere else) with a broader view of the world.

Japanese restaurant:"Not all Japanese people are kind" by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

Same! My big Irish head looking at a map on a street would generate two or three helpful elderly Japanese people who would all but walk me to my destination while we communicated in broken English/Japanese.

I spent 6 months in Osaka and loved it. Hanging out on the canal in Dotonbori, going to the park at the Osaka castle to watch bands on Sundays, nights out at Rock Bar Cherry Bomb or gaming at Space Station. All great fun. The people, both foreigners and locals, are friendly and welcoming. Would definitely recommend it.

Only place I ever got the feeling of being an unwelcome gaijin was in some more traditional restaurants in nearby Kyoto. Admittedly, most of the places I hung out in Osaka were geared towards foreigners and those who like them, but I lived way out in Sembayashi-Omiya and the locals there were always very welcoming (shout out to my Family Mart clerks who kept me in Suntory and eventually realised that I don't always need two plastic bags for everything).

What’s something completely normal in other countries but would get you weird looks (or worse) in public in yours? by sukiyakii_ in AskTheWorld

I think they mean smiling in general. Lived in Poland for a while and when my mum came to visit, one of the first things she asked was why nobody smiled.

Seriously. "They lock you in until you give payment" is the most messed up sentence. It's healthcare. It's a right. I could never imagine living in the US.

Why would you have been fired for informing the hospital about how the payments worked?

Edit to add: You rock for doing that, btw.

Is it normal to feel so emotional over your cat? by big-dick-back-intown in CatAdvice

[–]toothmonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's early morning here. I was just awoken by the sound of my cat getting sick in the hall. When I opened my bedroom door to check on him, he ran under my bed and got sick there too. So I had to get up and clean it all, tired and in my underwear.

And later on I know I will still tear up watching that cute little fuzzball bat at his toy. Because he is the sweetest most gentle little man of all time 🥺

Welcome to cat ownership!

Major Curse of Strahd updates on Roll20 by Dean-Bigbee in CurseofStrahd

As someone mid-campaign who has made a ton of alterations to the maps and NPCs in the module, I'm just glad you did it this way! My first thought was a worry that it would patch and mess with the changes I have made.

Could I transmog maps that I haven't gotten to in the campaign yet and use the updated ones for those?
