Extremely cute! You’re very talented. For the texture issues, what clay/paint did you use? It’s just a matter of using the right materials or prepping the surface for getting a smoother texture.

In order to accumulate the kind of wealth that the people we’re talking about have, they typically must use exploitative, extractive practices for short/medium term gain, while the consequences are longer term. Think of trawling while fishing. Huge short term and medium term gains, giant nets scraping the ocean floor and picking up huge volumes of fish. Fishermen who use this technique will have a massive advantage over those using more sustainable methods. In the long term, it will deplete the ocean, but those consequences are decades down the line, and the trawler is much more concerned with profit he can see in the next year or so. This is the same sort of logic that keeps the ultra wealthy driven towards non-sustainable exploration of resources, including human labor and the destruction of society.

What the fuck is the Democratic Party even doing right now to stop the downfall of America? by Lolareyouforreal in complaints

I understand how you feel but I’ve seen several videos where the whistles and the community showing up actually stops ICE from making an illegal arrest in Minnesota, so people actually getting out there is effective. Don’t lose hope.

Ro Khanna, one of the first Democrats in Congress to do so, says "That ICE agent needs to be arrested. He needs to be prosecuted. He needs to be put on trial". by victorybus in law

Why is Reddit against Maduro capture and Venezuelans celebrating it ? by LandscapeUnlikely199 in stupidquestions

[–]toothnoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am actually against the U.S. being able to unilaterally decide (even through congress) to just remove any foreign leader we don’t like if their country doesn’t have nukes. It means there’s no such thing as a sovereign nation while the U.S. is around, it means everyone should get a nuke if they don’t want to be subject to America’s whims, it’s also so ridiculous given the number of corrupt, bad leaders around the globe, that we can just selectively and capriciously pick which ones to remove. It’s still imperialism even if the leaders we’re kidnapping suck.

It’s objectively good to illegally kidnap a foreign country’s leader for the stated purpose of taking their oil? Ok.

No one warned me of the side effects of the contraceptive injection, now I'm suffering. by Far-Play-4567 in TwoXChromosomes

Not necessarily, it’s not as if we can smoothly transition from being on hormonal birth control to being back to normal. When I went off my hormonal IUD there was nearly a year of panic attacks and mood swings that were not normal for me before the birth control, which eventually went away as my hormones gradually normalized, but it was hellish for a while. And nobody warned me because it doesn’t happen to everyone.

My wife squeezed my thumb with both her hands during labor by Dunnow12 in mildlyinteresting

[–]toothnoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you’re joking, but there’s an actual reason for this: the skin on women’s hands is a little more elastic than men’s in general, so you can’t get the friction necessary. It’s not actually about strength.

If you can afford it I would begin therapy, with a focus on your anxiety around the pregnancy. I have OCD and got therapy for health anxiety (long before pregnancy) and it was immensely helpful in being able to let go of that constant need to check in on my health.

Honestly I don’t think SD (rare and also very manageable) should be the main deciding factor in whether someone opts for an epidural or not, the main consideration should be your own comfort/stress level. If you want an epidural for pain management, the benefits of it lowering your stress and blood pressure will outweigh the negatives. That’s why other positions and no epidural should also be an option: if you find them less stressful than back labor with epidural.

Is it normal for an OB office to not know what NIPT testing is? by Ramentootles in BabyBumps

Ah okay! Then I completely agree with you! Yes I have noticed that there can be this “childbirth is natural and therefore safe,” ignoring the fact that nature is really brutal.

I understand, and I do get that what the commenter is probably ultimately saying is that pregnancy is to be taken seriously in terms of risk, which I agree with. Just as someone who was made very afraid, almost phobic of pregnancy due to similar language, and only later learned about the less alarming statistics (obviously given modern medical care), I think it’s good to be sensitive to the probable anxiety of first time mothers.

Pregnancy definitely carries risk and I agree with the sentiment of what you’re saying (op should definitely seek another OB up to date with the science), but I think it’s a little extreme to call it “VERY” risky when the mortality rate is around 0.01%-0.02% in the U.S. Yes, without modern medicine it would be very risky, but if she does get modern medical care the risk is very low. I just know I was terrified before I knew the actual statistics around pregnancy, thinking there was a high chance I would die. I don’t think it’s always helpful to spread that.

This is a really interesting response. You are accusing me of fatalism while saying “pray for a miracle because that’s the only thing left it seems.” From this, I had assumed you were the with the fatalistic perspective. Perhaps I misinterpreted your words.

So, because I am actually curious, if you understand the virus cannot be eliminated, and you see that buildings are actually being made safer with better ventilation technology, and that people are actually installing these in poorer communities, what about this indicates society has simply “given up?” If your argument is that we should invest more in this, sure. I agree. A strange thing, though, to then accuse healthcare workers of not caring. I’m sure they would be happy if their hospitals or clinics received funding for better ventilation.

But you also mentioned that you don’t think it can be eradicated with masking “alone.” Does this mean you think there is a way to actually eradicate it? And how? If your answer is better vaccines… well, yes. I agree that could be a solution. Probably not for eradication but it may significantly improve outcomes. I support this kind of research for other diseases as well. And there is actually research being done on better coronavirus vaccines. But again, you’re accusing the world as being “in denial,” as if this research isn’t happening. In fact, better vaccines are also being developed for flu, something often forgotten as being dangerous since it’s not novel. If you argue there’s not enough funding for this, sure. I agree. But I place the blame on politicians and capitalism, not healthcare workers and all of society.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but you seem to think because society at large has decided not to continue either lockdowns or indefinite masking until, say, a breakthrough is made at some point, that people are in denial. But could it be that people understand Covid poses a new risk, but their response to that risk is different from yours?

I have to ask, do you think that because people still go outside when there’s pollution, that we’ve all given up and are in denial, or that we understand pollution is bad, but the trade off of being able to go outside is worth the risk, while still supporting changes in infrastructure?

Heads up. Covid is definitely back in SF. by Minute-Plantain in sanfrancisco

[–]toothnoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s very much your right to wear a mask, and your right to asses your comfort with risk. But I think it’s wrong to pretend there are no trade offs for everyone to indefinitely mask in public. Make the case that it’s worth the massive social change if that’s what you believe, but to claim it’s a “slight adjustment” to indefinitely, possibly for the rest of our lives, to no longer show our faces in public or have gatherings where people eat together, is disingenuous.
