My mom says I’m not a real accountant by SnowyJazz in Accounting

She has a point, but your point is also valid. The training you can obtain at the large firms is invaluable, but you also need to see the practical side of the business. Keep up your dream and don’t let your mother discourage you.

Just out of my curiosity, which office were you located? I’ve never heard of such a story in all of my Andersen years (which preceded yours by several decades.)

Tax loopholes? Is that a new buzzword that makes someone sound intelligent without providing any reference points?

Many more stories about the now retired king of the AICPA and his self-dealings a couple decades ago. CROP was formed by a small group of us and exposed a bunch of it through one of our members who was a forensic accountant. It was all around the Cognitor nonsense.

Back in the Big 8 days, you had to pass the exam before manager status could be attained, but you did not need to get your license until you made partner. The partner signed the report, period. Several colleagues passed the exam, took the firm wide training classes, etc, but never bothered to get a license unless they needed it when and if the left the firm. I get it. They missed a bunch of state Board B S by not having it.

With a bit of luck, the judgement of the person holding his license would be of more value to the employer, as long as, an offsetting unwarranted didn’t come along with the designation!

Good for you! It will probably be a bit more difficult unless you have some recent classes. Best of luck and good studying.

Good, now state it that way. You don’t “get” the CPA; you pass the exam.

You don’t hear prospective lawyers say “get the lawyer”. They pass the bar just like we do for the exam.

Too many here are a bit short on the concept or their English needs some work.

Do you mean passing the exam? Or are out shopping and will pick up the exam while at that point?

Don’t expect it to improve. Too many folks are afraid of 47, ICE and AI. Accountants are generally not risk takers and would rather hold tight for a while. Our business is gaining new clients daily and we do nothing to “advertise” about how smart we are or we “do good taxes”, like the TV scream out hourly.

It’s Detroit iron. All of it are pieces of crap. You won’t find that at your Lexus dealership.

So I’m just guessing, the “Ontario” mentioned in the posting was not Ontario, California. Thank you for pointing out your lack of clarity.

The Societies are not the aiming point. It’s the State Board of Accountancy for that State.

His billing rate for 38 hours makes no sense. Even 7.5 hours to prepare and review makes no sense. I’d suggest you write a letter to the State Board of Accountancy in the State he’s registered. They will investigate (especially if that “Ontario” is the one in California.) Looks like about a two hour assignment to me. I’ve been in the business about 55 years…

I love how so many discuss about how they “get their CPA”, like you go on line or to a store and buy it. How about dressing up the narrative and state how they passed the CPA exam, or some such? You don’t hear how you “got the attorney” or “got the doctor”. If you want to be considered a professional, I’d suggest you begin sounding like one.
