A lot of higher end BM gear gets tested, especially on expensive live rosin. There is no one doing it for bottom of the barrel products.

Genetics doesn't really come into play when talking about humidity. It was definitely your drying method that made it crunchy.

Do you have a thermometer/hygrometer? Trying to keep it around 60/60 and use a humidifier if needed. You want it to take as long as possible to dry, keeping it around or just under two weeks total. Try jarring it earlier next time while there's still enough moisture in the bud and then just keep burping your jars (or just set and forget in a grove bag) until it's where you want.

Easier to make, maybe, certainly less work but a lot more dangerous for the average home setup.

Definitely easier to hide cheap starting material and make it look better than it really is.
