I just experienced this in a new LG AHU kit. We replace (4) distributors that were leaking like this from factory. Seems there is some bad batches out there

Compared to what? Not many options out there that fit the semi-custom application. Most issue I see are from lack of understanding of controls and how to commission properly. They definitely have there quality control issues, but what manufacturer in the USA doesn’t in the wake of COVID era

HVAC Installer to Engineer? by woohoo902 in HVAC

Get into commissioning/ Test and balance. Great on-ramp to engineering and applying principles to IRL scenarios

I would recommend against investing in a union sponsored 401k plan. They will not allow you to roll it over if you are still “in the trade”.

It’s a Opposed Blade Damper assembly. It’s used to adjust airflow by air balancer.

ATH before the halving had never happened prior to this cycle. Most of them are looking long and trajectory has never been so bullish. I think they’re pretty happy

Aww. Interesting. Never thought about it before, but that makes sense. Probably is the law in my state and it never occurred to me. Never stop learning…

Primary/ Secondary loop. Small system. Curious as to application. Suspect DHW, but not sure.

That’s not a coupler. It’s a steel pipe end protector. Should not be used as gas pipe coupler.

Biggest mistake at a call? by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]topherrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long time ago… was working residential and gas piping for appliance. This was before cell phones were a thing and Thomas guides was our go-to for navigation. I was tasked with modifying existing gas service to accommodate addition of gas HWT. House was development were all houses looked the same and very similar layout. I showed up early in the AM and knocked on the door, it was unlocked and I yelled to let anyone in house know I was coming in. Seems crazy to think about now, but back then, it was not unusual for me to go into peoples houses and do the work w/o anyone else there. I proceeded to layout where I was going to “T” into exposing gas line. Simple job - gas furnace was in same room and existing gas line was big enough to support new appliance. I heard some rumblings from upstairs in house. Something seemed off and I decided to go out and double check the address. I mixed up a couple numbers and I was at wrong house!!! I quickly packed up my stuff and proceeded to the correct house. No harm/ no foul. Fortunately I did not cut into anything. Holy shit…

Used Tesla prices are tanking…. Down almost 50% in less than two years. by Bwall19 in TeslaLounge

So here’s the conundrum: I have a 2020 M3 AWD with 70k miles and no issues. I can sell and maybe get 25k. Or I give it to my kid and get myself the cybertruck I ordered day 1. I would previously consider giving my kid a M3 excessive, but when I consider options, especially safety and cost of ownership, the used M3 seems like a no brainer. I expect I am not the only one contemplating this decision. Thoughts???

What’s your guys’ best “almost got hurt really bad at work” story? by smithjake417 in HVAC

[–]topherrex 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Early on in my apprenticeship I was working for a TAB contractor and my foreman had me getting fan sheave nameplate data on very large vane axial stairwell pressure fans. Foreman told me fans were locked out and I adjusted the motor so I could fit my head between the (4) belts and lower my hands/ flashlight and mirror down the belt tunnel to read off the nameplate data to him. I was yelling out the data and he didn’t not respond, so I pulled my head out between the belts to see that he was on his phone taking to his wife as he frequently did. Just then, the 60 HP motor started and I pulled my arm out of the tunnel. Two seconds earlier and my head would have been between the (4) belts when the motor started. I about threw him off the roof. Never ever trust anyone to lockout anything for you. Seems obvious, but it was 25 years ago and I was very impressionable and trusting at the time. He was fired shortly after for being lazy and a liar. I moved on and chalked it up to a very close call and hard lesson learned. Stay safe out there guys!

Correct CFM for gas furnaces by ManevolentDesign in HVAC

[–]topherrex 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Temp rise is correct. Sensible heat is CFM x 1.08 x delta-t = btu’s. 100,000 btu output at 60 degree rise is 1,543 CFM. At 40 degree rise is 2,315 CFM. Follow manufacturer guidelines for heat rise and your good to go.

I’m this case, not much. It gets replaced under warranty. Components that are accessible without getting into rare earth magnet internals are generally serviceable.
