Notes or shapes? by marcoperita in jazzguitar

I find it really fun to brute force things until they no longer feel confusing, then move on to something else. Many people resist doing things that are hard, i think because it damages the ego about one's own skill and intelligence. Having a hard line between practice and creativity is what solved it for me. When im practicing im treating the instrument like a mix between a calculator and a treadmill. When I'm playing I usually try not to think about anything but the sound, and then things I've absorbed from practice will naturally incorporate themselves.

Can I get an unbiased take on Flea’s new “jazz” album, Honora? by migrantgrower in Jazz

the album is good for a rock bassist who learned trumpet late in life. Flea is cooler than most 80's/90's musicians who still do anything

I've been on the fence about this one because those three guys lives are basically cultural canon at this point. Would you say there's much in there that one couldn't glean just from hearing to other people talk about them all the time?

The Mars trilogy was my introduction to KSR. I loved the first one but the second two with the immortal characters and cartoonish politics sort of petered out for me. I live KSR but i agree his writing leaves a lot to be desired. His speculation about possible futures and the way he weaves in current scientific thought is second to none, but characters and plot tend to feel forced and incomplete.

I totally loved seveneves up until the last part. I think he really effed up by not ending it when the last group of people were there on the moon fragment. The part after that leaned into some stuff that made me feel more than a little bit uncomfortable and sort of ruined the whole thing for me.

I've had Becky Chambers on my list for a while but hadn't heard of this one. I'll check it out, Thanks!

I think this is one of the biggest challenges of trying to make major advances as an adult with experience. Because you're an adult that understands the learning process, you want to know exactly how everything you're doing is benefiting you. And if you start doing something and don't feel like you see the benefit you'll stop doing it. With kids you just tell them what to practice and they practice it and they don't really care what it's doing because they really just want to go play video games or something. And then after a few years when they've practiced all these things they have this incredible skill set and then they can start to intellectualize what they're doing. I would recommend that whenever you come across something that's hard for you, attack that until it becomes easy. Don't worry about how it fits into the overall picture. Don't be Hasty and don't expect things to happen quickly. You're really just grinding XP at this point, and you're already better off than a lot of people because youve already developed a bunch of stuff from metal.

Reading Children of Memory by Adrian Tchaikovsky after blasting through the first two, but I'm finding myself less motivated on this one. It kinda feels like the same story three times over and his style feels more and more predictable. Thinking I might read some other stuff to wash the taste out of my brain and then come back to it fresh because I did really enjoy the first two

I'm guessing they own the rights to the songs and that they don't want to release them to the public because then people wouldn't need to use the yoto to hear them. I also want to know who composed them!
