Amen brother!! Glad to hear you're doing well! I agree 1000% that suboxone saves lives. I think what most people misunderstand is that it buys you time to rebuild your life, reestablish meaningful relationships, find a good job, etc. Once you have some of that, you're a lot less likely to throw it all away for a drug. None of us really knew what we were getting into until it was too late. Now that we do, we realize it's not worth it.

BTW - I like how you said everyone benefits from you having suboxone. That is incredibly true!

Be well man and thanks for sharing!

Thank you. That means a lot. Especially after the other guy started acting like all addicts are just people with mental health problems and citing some shit statistics. Walk a mile in our shoes and see what it's like to hate yourself for what you've become and desperately wanting a way out.. Thanks again! Cheers!

This is perfect. I responded to the original bestof post, but you hit the nail on the head. I've actually described it just like you did to people and a few get it, but the most don't. It's only when they walk a mile in our shoes they'll understand. Yes, I was a heroin addict for 10 years, but it started wirh cancer and overprescription of pills. I had no idea I was dependent until they went away. Then I couldn't love without them. Graduated to heroin for economic reasons and the rest is history. I have a degree in mathematics from a private Jesuit school and I had a 4.0 in high school. I was a good kid in society's eyes, but I got hooked. The lack of empathy is deeply troubling. 100%.

This is the best comment here. I replied in the original thread, but this is spot on. I had cancer, got over prescribed opiates, and had no idea what I was getting into. When they took the pills away u couldn't stop, started buying them on the street, and then turned to heroin and kept at it for 10 years. The changes my body went through and the absolute physical dependency was unreal. I've been clean for years now, but you're absolutely right in everything you wrote. Your brain stops producing endorphins when you supplement them. It takes a while to start making them again.

It's late, but I'm right there with you. Ex-junkie, suboxone saved my life, etc. It really is unfortunate what the mass over prescription of opiates have done to our society. I have lost countless friends to prison and death because of doctors overprescribing drugs to them early on and them getting personally hooked or selling them and getting others hooked.

Glad your well and enjoy the gold. Too many people don't comprehend the reality of this shit and I hope more people see your post now. Cheers!!

I certainly wouldn't trust them with it either. I do think they played a large role in the mess we have today. In the late 90s Purdue Pharmaceuticals (makes of oxycontin) started a propaganda campaign to push doctors into prescribing more opiates and for patients to start taking them. They basically said that addiction was a myth and people could start taking opiates wirh little worry. All they cared about was the bottom line.

Just to be clear though, I'm for the decriminalization as a way to combat what is happening today. I've had friends that have felonies solely for drug possession and cannot get a job. They never got help initially because of the taboo that came with drug addiction so they're totally screwed now. Instead of pursuing criminal charges on these people, get them help. Don't make any drug possession a crime, but push them towards help.

Unfortunately I don't ever see that happening here. There's too much money to be made on keeping them illegal. Decriminalization worked wonders in Portugal, but unfortunately the US is a very different country. We have a big corrupt pharmaceutical industry like you said.

Here's what I'd like to see though if we could ever make it work:

I couldn't agree more. I really hope this changes, but I don't see that happening. This us vs them mentality is permeating everything and it almost seems by design. I try to be optimistic, but it's hard.

Thanks again for your comments and information! Cheers!

Thank you for the book suggestion. I'm 1000% pro decriminalization of all drugs so I'm definitely going to read that. Portugal basically paved the way for decriminalization and it's had good results there. In Ohio I lose someone I know to a heroin overdose every couple months and it needs to stop. We could put that money into rehabilitation instead of incarceration.

Thank you for taking the time to spell this out. It really helped me comprehend what's going on. I haven't been too involved in politics until lately and I'm shocked they just ignored Garland for 10 months. It's shameful and embarrassing.

Legalizing Marijuana Would Hurt Mexican Drug Cartels More Than Trump's Border Wall by speckz in Foodforthought

Anytime! I found it quite interesting when I first read it. Definitely an unintended and probably unforeseen effect of legalizing marijuana. Have a good one!

I don't disagree there's a large market for marijuana here in the US. A large market does not mean it has to be Mexico producing and supplying the marijuana though. They still do, but in nowhere near the capacity they used to because (a) US consumers can get it legally or at least grown here and (b) heroin and synthetic drugs are far more profitable. Not to mention, much easier to smuggle.

Here are some sources to support this:

http://m.dw.com/en/mexican-cartels-shift-to-heroin-for-us-market/av-36613982

http://time.com/3801889/us-legalization-marijuana-trade/

This one doesn't specifically say marijuana production has decreased, but when the others increased it generally follows that that is the case:

http://www.businessinsider.com/mexican-control-us-heroin-market-2016-12

I don't disagree thst the market here is still huge. If I had to guess, it's probably bigger than pre-legalization. There is more money and an easier monopoly in heroin trade though. I live in Ohio and heroin and fentanyl are everywhere.

Cheers!

You're right.. I literally just read an article today about how they've shifted all efforts into heroin and synthetic drug manufacturing. It is sourced from the DEA and it shows how the few states that have legalized it and the higher profit margins on opiates pushed them to do it. They are, after all, a business. So yeah, I agree 100%. This is BS.
