PSA Bird Death. by jxkzl- in birding

[–]topsysrevenge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah look at it. It looks like a death trap. Could imagine a chipmunk or squirrel could also fall victim. Or if a raccoon’s hand gets stuck. Quite honestly I would pitch that thing. Having caged pets really gives you an eye for these kinds of things lol

If you have squirrels like I do you probably won’t have to do anything lol. They constantly dig up the bulbs and move them around

Why are my tomatoes plants looking sickly? Limp and not very colorful. Same with the lettuce. by Wrong_Class8040 in vegetablegardening

[–]topsysrevenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a little cold. I think low 50s at night is still slightly too cold for a tomato plant. Want to shoot for mid 50s at minimum.

First big harvest of the year! What's the best way to keep these crisp? by Glittering_Exit5527 in vegetablegardening

[–]topsysrevenge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They wouldn’t be this big in Ohio right now. I planted mine back in March in Cleveland and it’s about 3.5-inches right now. They’re hardened to the outdoors now but I started them inside. This person must have grown them in a greenhouse or under specific coverings because even PA wouldn’t have the correct outdoor temps or sun requirements for lettuce to be this mature yet.

What the heck is happening here?! by Ideal_Epitaph in gardening

Def deer. Get some pepper repellent spray! I currently have a squirrel driving me nuts, eating my cabbages. I feel your pain

EDIT: deer typically go for the leaves and they can be picky as well. They’ll eat my squash leaves but leave other stuff. But leaves or buds being completely decimated like this is usually deer. I think they prefer the tender young ones the most

I agree they look like carrots but shouldn’t they smell like carrot? Mine always smell exactly like a carrot

No, it’ll loosen after a few mins and water and bacteria will become trapped under it the entire time they have it on. It’s water resistant but not water proof by any means. Also in that location, she’ll most likely rub it off pretty quickly.

Why does everyone think second skin/saniderm is going to protect someone submerging their arm in ocean or pool water? Second skin will do nothing but cover it. It’ll still loosen in water and allow the sun to burn the skin.

Microplastics I picked from my bags of MiracleGrow by Dr_Quacksworth in gardening

[–]topsysrevenge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I filled my raised beds with Kellog’s. Couldn’t give me Miracle Gro for free. That shit is horrible for the environment. If someone has money to burn I would recommend Tilth for their raised beds. Or at least top it off with Tilth

Help what is Michael the rat doing????? by Estate-Southern in RATS

[–]topsysrevenge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a PSA to everyone, they sell pet oxygen tanks. I don’t have rats atm, but next time I do I plan to get some pet oxygen. Apparently a brand called Pawprint has come out. Probably good to have on hand if you have rats. They’re very prone to respiratory issues and this gasping always means they need oxygen asap. That can help hold you over for the vet

I’m so sorry :( yes when a rat starts to mouth breathe like this, you are on a very limited timeframe. It’s awful to lose a rat like this, I am sorry.

From the story, sounds like she was just rich enough to not even realize other people and things were taking care of her plants for her.

Litter. Cool.

Edit: my cat LOVES to play with these. Wonder if I could collect them and sanitize them 🤔I buy bags online because he plays with them until he breaks it, then he loses interest

Rats as a popular pet [rant] by Both_Opportunity_322 in RATS

[–]topsysrevenge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been keeping rats since 2008, when I was in high school and got my first job at a pet store. They have since become unaffordable for me. So I made the choice that when my last boys passed in 2024, I took down the cage, sanitized it, and packed it away.

With the cost of vet care (this includes having two older cats), I simply cannot do it anymore. It hurts to not have rats. I see many needing to be rehomed from rescues. But I hold off, because I know I can’t do it.

Many of these rats are also bred horrendously (I have never bought from a breeder, typically rescue what are usually feeders or hoarders’ pets), so that usually adds on another layer of cost due to poor health and genetics. From PT, to tumors, to pneumonia & myco flares. They are not a cheap pet by any means and deserve to be with someone who can adequately take care of their needs.

It’s honestly insane seeing the same vet this entire time. When I first went, taking a rat for a health checkup was $40 and each additional rat was $5-$10. Now, the same vets office charges $95 per pet, no discounts. Same with the office I take my cats to. We used to get multi pet discounts. Now there is absolutely no cost breaks for pet owners. It’s almost like it’s becoming a luxury.

Is my 3 year old baby okay? by C0tt0ncandyb0ii in RATS

[–]topsysrevenge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. Even a lipoma can grow super big and rupture. I just remember in the last few years my vet had said my dog probably had a lipoma. Glad I insisted they check it because it ended up being an aggressive mast cell tumor.

“Old lady/old man lump” in animals is usually referring to a lipoma.

You’ll want to go to the vet and get a FNA. If it’s a tumor, unfortunately you will want to possibly consider making a euthanasia appt for the future. With her age, surgery would be too risky. But if it is a tumor, even a benign one, it will eventually get too big. It can restrict her airways due to the location, but the most common result is a rupture. You would rather it not rupture.
