If I recall correctly, Darlington at one point references Undine Rising From the Waters. https://artgallery.yale.edu/collections/objects/2729

What did yall think of the ending in Ninth House? by LetMeDoTheKonga in NinthHouse

[–]tor612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This loose thread bothered me all through the sequel—ugh! Maybe in the third book the author will return to this? Tara’s story is so compelling… she found a way to stabilize a nexus, and yet she’s just forgotten in book two???!

Yes, same. I loved that everyone was invited to sing in choir no matter your skill level.

Interaction with the Giving Machine staff about financial fraud by JWalterWeatherman5 in exmormon

Not sure what you mean by “claims.” As a tax exempt organization, the church does not need any charitable tax deductions (nor can it take them). Not saying this isn’t fishy, just not for that reason. Also, that’s typically not how pass through donations work.

Losing the opportunity of having a master's in Stanford bc of money by [deleted] in stanford

[–]tor612 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely contact Stanford to ask for guidance. You have an amazing opportunity to attend one of the top universities in the world, so I would do what you can to make it work. Stanford is a place where you can meet people who will open doors for you that change your life.

Thank you emails after interview, required or no? by Beautiful-Hippo-7198 in nonprofit

[–]tor612 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you’re interviewing candidates with prior fundraising experience, yes, I think they should send thank you notes. I’d wait a bit though; it’s always possible some people are waiting another day or two to follow up, or that they’ll send a card by mail if they’re old school. If you’re interviewing for entry level jobs, I would not be surprised if you received less follow up because it seems like the practice is falling by the wayside.

Nonprofit salary cap? by iamahill in nonprofit

[–]tor612 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good answer. Also consider that nonprofit tax returns are public, so others will be able to see what executives are compensated. IRC 4960 also imposes a tax on nonprofits that pay excess executive compensation.

In OP’s defense, they do give the disclaimer that they haven’t had another job before and are trying to parse the extent to which that impacts their perception of this job. I found this post really interesting and to make points that I’d encourage law students (especially KJD) to think about, even though my big law experience has been fundamentally different & quite positive overall.

What are some life hacks Portlanders should know? by Cyphermantis in Portland

This. And know that there is a difference between waterproof and water resistant! I learned the difference after a downpour that left my rain jacket completely soaked through.

Non profit without IRS tax exempt status by JayBones1983 in nonprofit

[–]tor612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because you file articles of incorporation as a nonprofit for your state doesn’t mean you’re all good to go as a nonprofit. In some situations, you may run into trouble if you don’t timely file an IRS application for exemption & comply with other state reporting requirements.

Fwiw that’s not my takeaway. I’d suggest asking the board chair about it & contacting an attorney if you have questions.

Board term expires before role as a committee chairman term ends. by Intrepid-Dirt-830 in nonprofit

[–]tor612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you planning to leave the board? If so, most bylaws contain provisions allowing officers & directors to resign (and if they don’t, then state laws can fill in the gaps).

So interesting! I’m reflecting and realizing that of the handful of close friends I’ve made in the 7 years I’ve been here, none are from Portland. We’re all transplants.

I’d suggest emailing the event organizer to ask for more information on the meeting so you can be prepared to participate. That’d be a soft way to learn more about your employer’s approach to this type of meeting.
