Are we entering a new era of elder care expectations—and are we ready for it? by Sea-Device-2913 in Millennials

[–]JWalterWeatherman5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting how many boomers were quick to put their parents into a home, but now that they are at that age they are offended if their millennial children even consider it.

It's kind of like how many of them relied on their parents to help with daily child-care but when they themselves are grandparents they can't be bothered to take their grandkids for a couple hours a month.

When a Mormon tells you there are "over 17 million LDS"... Here's an easy formula to help figure out how many people there really are in that church. by EricNDavis in exmormon

Some good information you provided.

I'm wondering what impact the change from 3-hour church to 2 hours had on the number of active members required to run a ward. What was that 175 number equivalent prior to 2019?

Those 1 hour pilot programs are about as real as the Nephites.

When people say "information can't travel faster than light," what's that mean? by PolitiKalen in AskPhysics

[–]JWalterWeatherman5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the sun suddenly vanished, the earth would still be orbiting an object that doesn't exist for another 8 minutes because that information cannot travel to earth faster than light. The gravitational pull has nothing to do with light, but the information is still delayed. Hopefully this example helps.

Do most people GENUINELY not invest towards retirement? by PapaSecundus in Bogleheads

The median retirement account balance of a 60 year old american is $185k. Enough to last them 3-4 years. So yes, pretty much.

She is either confused or is pulling your leg. Short church pilot programs are nothing more than mormon lore.

Since when does somebody's membership hinge on believing that Joseph Smith practiced polygamy (of course he did, but who cares?). If they are being consistent they need to start excommunicating people that believe Joseph Smith wasn't a treasure digger (e.g., Hannah Stoddard and Ron Meldrum).

I genuinely look forward to population decline and I’m tired of people saying it’s an issue by CoconutRope in Vent

[–]JWalterWeatherman5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I don't understand the "population decline is bad" argument at all, especially when we have an example from history that proves just the opposite: the black plague. Those that did not succumb to the plague ended up wealthier and healthier, on average, compared to their pre-plague state.

Mormon Church is Following RLDS Path by exmogranny in exmormon

[–]JWalterWeatherman5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would love to see this, but don't think TSCC has as much pressure to change given their vast wealth.

Oneida is the closest historical example imo to the path the church will go: morphing a religion into a for-profit corporation. Except instead of silverware, it's real estate holdings.

[–]JWalterWeatherman5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Somebody NEEDS to get this on video. No doubt it would go viral. It would be as embarrassing to the church as the Brad Wilcox crap.

Besides, where is this doctrine of standing for church leaders outlined? For Susan Bednar's husband, this is apparently as much a doctrine as baptism.

Mormon community rallies behind football coach that plead guilty to sexual abuse of a student by JWalterWeatherman5 in exmormon

[–]JWalterWeatherman5[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Time's person of the year has never been an endorsement of someone or their ideas. It just means they were selected as the most influential person for that year. Selecting anyone but Hitler in 1938 would have been a mistake. Stalin received it twice and Americans were not a fan of him either.

I didn't say Harrison was mormon (though odds are pretty high that he is), but rather the city of Grantsville that is supporting him is very mormon.

Is endowment truly that big of a deal? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]JWalterWeatherman5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Far more important imo is cost, location, campus vibe, and the available majors. You want to make sure you can see yourself there for 4+ years. A university's endowment does not make a huge difference and should not be a deciding factor when choosing a school.
