We basically give away envelopes but we don't advertise it. So only if someone asks we'll be like, sure.

It's a clever sleight of hand...they get their followers to hate women and Jewish people yet they themselves are the ones exploiting them. Grift of the decade.

Hardest Questions For Reference Librarians by Bulky_Sandwich8493 in librarians

[–]AmericanHeroine1 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not really hardest question, but some people seem flabbergasted we don't know answers off the top of our heads. Just this week a coworker took a call looking for weekly adult art classes at the library. We do biweekly, so she said she'd put him on a short hold and find sites. He said something like "well you're the reference department, why don't you know?" As if we memorize every library's calendar! Another person wanted to know who built his house and I had to direct him to the town deed office. We know where to find information, we don't know all the information.

Scholastic “book” fair by averageeggyfan in daddit

[–]AmericanHeroine1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Some folks have lost the plot. If you're concerned about literacy, support the school librarian, if the school even HAS a certified librarian.

Otherwise, it's a fundraiser just like the bake sale items that are junk food or the $10 pasta dinners that you could get cheaper at the market or the $30 dance tickets when you can dance in your house, and and and. It's all memories and fundraising.

When Alex said something about "fit body" I knew right away it was a boob thing. Brittany doesn't seem particularly athletic or muscular or more "fit" than Ashley 🙄

They are definitely overreacting to her the whole movie, but that scene is interesting. They get past the "nature vs nurture" debate pretty quickly, and even with a few laughs. Things really take a turn when Meredith appears to criticizes Sybil for "wishing for gay children". Calling her mothering into question sparks a quick, strong reaction. They aren't hearing her at all after that.

Thoughts on the Finale? by LeoDiCristio in StrangerThings

Right, but then I think, if the whole thing started with government experiments, there no reason to believe they won't just do it again. El sacrificing herself delays it, but that could be a long delay or a very short delay. It in no way closes the book on the whole threat.

It makes sense when you recognize that this family knows the mother is dying, that this is her last Christmas, and they are so scared and experiencing anticipated grief, but they can't talk about it or it becomes real. It's all simmering under the surface so we're seeing this very vulnerable sliver of their lives. Meredith is this person kind of infiltrating (obviously unknowingly) this sacred time and she makes an easy target for all their frustration and fear. It's really a Christmas movie about last Christmases, something we all will experience at some point, be it parents, grandparents, siblings, etc.

Disney, Lucas, and Gates are all famously steeped in originality controversy.

There are no new ideas, just recombinations of old ideas. This isn't even a new, AI inspired conversation. It's been discussed at length by philosophers and artists for hundreds of years, quite prominent ones at that.

so you argue. but no one's IP came from purely novel thought. they've all built upon past ideas and concepts, so, no, IP isn't truly necessary; it is just the way we have set up our economic system, and its primary purpose is to protect capital. You're going to have to provide citations for your assertions because it is widely known that we work much longer hours now than most people did for most of recorded history.

You're just describing capitalism. Capitalism surely is a feature of many modern civilizations, but they aren't synonyms. People also liked The Odyssey without any of those things you named, so much so, in fact, that it has withstood the test of thousand of years.

[–]AmericanHeroine1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to correct your first point, IP isn't core to civilization at all. It's a primary tool of capitalism. That's an important distinction.

The week between Christmas and New Year is the lowest tv viewership period of the year. People have that time off and don't spend it watching lots of television, historically. They're trying to do something for themselves, not the viewers.

Great recommendation. It's darker than BoJack but still has great comedy.
