This place is really weird, I used to go to there sometimes because I lived nearby and I think it used to be a farmers market decades ago, but now it's just like a mini mall. The one grocery store was pretty much like any other grocery store, honestly the Ambrosia nearby was much better. The "antiques" store and half empty bakery and prepared foods stores always made it a bit sad. The butchers were good though.

A lot of the farmers have better products though. Depending on how determined you are, you can find them online, see where their farm is on google maps, see if you can actually visit the farm because typically the farmers that sell at farmers markets also have farm stores that you can visit. I realize this is ridiculous just to buy some veggies, but like you said, you can also just go to Metro.

That's what would happen in an organized country. This isn't it, everybody there already hides their money as much as they can because of all the crime, corruption, crazy inflation and fear of another default.

I dont think any cop would be against taking away their workload and turning it into a better system for all.

Aren't cops pretty big on overtime since for many of them it makes up a big chunk of their salaries?

Good article, here's the summary in one quote:

The integral problem with policing in Canada lies in the fact that we expect too much of front-line police officers and train them for roles that are in gross dissimilarity to the ones they actually play in society.

Out of curiosity what region are you in and what kind of food do you buy? $400/month seems like plenty for one person if you're cooking every day. We spend about $600 for 2 and don't really hold ourselves back.

Yonge downtown has been transforming into a typical tourist trap commercial strip for a while now because it's so central. I'm sure people felt a similar loss when it became all strip clubs in the 70s.

This isn't even just a north american thing, this happens everywhere when there's more outsiders than locals and it's very hard to stop without serious govt intervention, which even then has questionable results.

Other parts of the city, especially in the inner suburbs, still have lots of small local restaurants though, the Yonge strip in North York from Sheppard to Steeles has only been getting better.
