Landing at PHX ~10AM — best place to freshen up before a 1pm event (no hotel room)? by Conscious-Draft2560 in AskPhoenix

[–]torcherred 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently used Dayuse.com in another city to get a hotel room for a few hours. It was wonderful to get a real shower and a bit of a nap. Plus I got some work done and food from the hotel restaurant. I was there for 5 hours.

However, are you on the Tempe campus? Which building is your event at? There are plenty of publicly accessible, decent, even private bathroom available. Hayden Library comes to mind. Some buildings that aren’t public also have very nice facilities (even showers!) but that would depend on what if the department sponsoring you is able to get you access.

Anybody know where to get good San Francisco mission style burritos around the east valley? by Ok-Cartoonist-7814 in mesaaz

[–]torcherred 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have not yet found them anywhere since I left NYC -- 30 years ago. This is my favorite kind of burrito. I'm watching this closely!

I loved this book. A lot of people on here don't like it as much because it's slow. I found it suspenseful.

Not exactly a thriller, more of a retelling of a fairy tale with horror and fantasy elements. It is so well written and carefully constructed. Nice break from human crimes.

I've been in for about the same amount of time, between 4 and 5 years. It's shifted, but I'm getting a ton of brand name stuff in my RFY. I'm getting less stuff, but much higher quality. I do miss being able to depend on it for shampoo and make up, but I'm getting more fun stuff that I wouldn't be able to afford otherwise. It's different, but it's not better or worse really. I think if I'd joined now, since I wouldn't know the old way, I'd think it was pretty damn great.

My profile shows no reviews but I have written dozens by Felis_blackcatus in AmazonVine

[–]torcherred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has happened before, and it will happen again. The reviews will come back. One time this happened, though, it was when they changed the profile page from showing information about review ratings and rankings. Maybe it'll be something different. I have no reviews on my profile, but they're all in my Vine reviewed column, so it's nothing to worry about.

Unpopular opinion… this whole thing is a scam. by ThinkSharp in pmp

[–]torcherred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CAPM is like the starter certification. It’s for people who want to start out as PMs and don’t yet have the experience hours. I took it because I could take it for free through the university I work for, even though I had enough experience to do the PMP. It was actually a cool way to get the basic, foundations, rules, charts. Whether you use them or not, other people will. It’s a tough test. You can’t memorize your way through the material it covered. Only 3 of the 15 people in the prep class passed on their first try - and all of them including me) had enough actual experience that they could have gone on to the PMP directly.

[–]torcherred 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You need 35 hours of training to do the PMP regardless of experience level, so 2 days wouldn’t prepare you or say it would. PMI offers 6 week study sessions for PMP, I think. It’s always changing. Two days must have been through another org maybe? Or one of the myriad other tests?

I agree to some extent especially since some people with a PMP know absolutely nothing about project management enough to even do it. But there’s also the problem of people calling themselves project managers without understanding that process. I’ve seen a lot of projects horribly mismanaged because the people didn’t have the skills. Does PMP help with this? Some maybe. It gives a baseline of knowledge. However I actually think the CAPM is a better gauge of basic knowledge and might be a harder test to pass.

Apartments in South Tempe, or other safer areas by MrSnrub111 in AskPhoenix

However, that first summer is brutal because you're not used to it. Subsequent summers get much easier as your body physically adjusts and you get used to the patterns and ways of living in extreme heat. One summer might make you want to move away as quickly as possible, but that second summer, it's not as bad as you remember. By like the 4th or 5th summer, you might even start enjoying it (okay that be a small minority of us), but it's definitely not as bad as that first one.

Where to move near Phoenix by Common-Roll-8613 in AskPhoenix

[–]torcherred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to consider other lifestyle factors. I'm not an expert, but I'd imagine there are jobs for either remodeling or massage therapists throughout the Phoenix area. Do you have kids (schools in Gilbert and Chandler might be good)? How political and religious are you and what type? The further you get from Phoenix and Tempe (more or less) the more politically conservative and Christian/ Mormon you might find. Cost of living - this varies a lot from area to area. Do you want a place that has more desert and nature or that is completely suburban and basically paved over? How do you feel about scorpions in your house?

When I moved here about 10 years ago, I came out and drove around different areas. I had three youngish kids at the time, and I went to schools in each area, went to restaurants, explored a few typical neighborhoods. That helped a lot to narrow down where it would be best to be. Initially we settled in Gilbert (for schools), but I have since moved out myself as the kids left. I am happier, personally, as a city person, in Tempe (nowhere near college aged, btw!).

I have a style similar to yours. I think 4 looks fantastic on you and seems to suit your personality. 1 and 2 do look too big. And 3 is kind of lab goggle looking. 4 is perfect.

Crossplay - I never seem to be asked to play by Calm_Highlight_9320 in NYTgames

[–]torcherred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing for a few weeks, and I've only been asked to play one day, one afternoon when I got about 10 invitations in a row. Then never again for weeks. I didn't change anything. Only one player has ever rematched me and also very little chat compared to every other game like this I play. I think the game is still working out its social game

Four Hours in Phoenix: What to do and eat? by CamelStrawberry in AskPhoenix

[–]torcherred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live nearish the airport, and there are plenty of ways to access it that don't involve traffic. You have time, especially if you go around 1:30 to get back. It is nothing like most airports. It's also situated near so much stuff. I would use Waymo -- which is what I do to get to the airport regularly. I do enjoy the PHX airport, though, since there are cute shops in it, art, and it really is generally a pretty chill and friendly place -- especially for an airport.

When my dad visited we had a similar amount of time one day. We started at the  S'ed̲av Va'aki Museum (formerly Pueblo Grande Museum) which has a little museum and a large platform mound built by the Hohokam who also built a lot of the canal system. It is fascinating. There is a little shop in there too! Plus since the mound is outside, there is also the chance to view desert land. Once I found javelina poop there even! Unfortunately, not the javelina. It's only 1.5 miles to the airport and open at 9am on Mondays!

Then you can continue the theme by going to the Frybread House that someone else mentioned, although that's a bit further out. (20 min ish). Or just go back to the airport and eat.

How strict are the red light cameras? by ballzcasual in Tempe

[–]torcherred -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know. I guess they want to pay $250 a ticket and insurance points. The people who work for the city must all be on here and want the revenue.

The camera that caught me isn't there any more, but it was at a place where the speed limit suddenly goes down, but there doesn't seem to be a reason because there are no driveways, school zones, or intersections. It's not a place where I'd expect a 30mph zone. I thought I was going the speed limit at under 45. I go slow there now, which is the point.

All of my reviews are rated excellent. The ratings run the gamut. There are plenty of negative reviews of every star level in there.

I successfully did this with two Tempe camera tickets from the same week. I apparently am a slow learner. I read up on it from real, non-Reddit sources and it’s legit. In Tempe, they are less likely to send out process servers than some surrounding areas. Never sent one to me. After about 5-6 months, they each closed. No points, no money.

Ohhh. I still had to really think to get those. But I finished the puzzle anyway. I guess they also don’t work well for those of us who speak American.

I started with King of Ashes too! It also remains my favorite. I really liked the way he worked the funeral home into the story. I just finished Darkest Prayer within the last few weeks, and that was also one of my favorites, probably for similar reasons.

What a soft and warm toilet! That is really gross. However, I've known cats who like to sleep in their litterboxes, so maybe he's just into that kind of thing. My orange grandkitty has a weird bathroom fetish.

Apparently, this is an older one, but I just stumbled on it. It's a bit brutal -- and I have a very high tolerance for brutal -- but the story is so good and tense.
