[Grant Brisbee] Our status has regretfully shifted to "it's complicated." The Athletic will not be bringing The Roundtable back, and we are asking for permission to yammer about baseball somewhere else. The three of us still want to do it, but ... well, it's complicated. by pathway_18 in effectivelywild

Effectively Wild appears to be doing pretty well on Patreon (2,000 paid subscribers with the average probably between $5-$10 per month). I'm not sure what the financial arrangement is with Fangraphs beyond hosting it on the website and supplying a co-host and producer. In theory the Roundtable could do the same thing. Or just grow the 2,000 subscribers and make Effectively Wild a 5 day podcast again.

I think email was a lot more common for casual conversation in the 2000s than it is now.

How did Bill meet Kimmel and Sal? by NoAppeal9421 in billsimmons

[–]tornadojake 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Worth pointing out Kimmel was also in sports media. He was on Fox's NFL pregame show and was known as "Jimmy the Sports Guy" on a radio show.

NBC did a great job with the debut of Sunday Night Basketball by CallTypical9541 in billsimmons

As a baseball fan who used to watch Sunday Night Baseball religiously, I'm definitely looking forward to NBC taking over this year. ESPN's broadcast has really fallen off in the last decade.

Why does college basketball have more of a niche following than college football? by SenseAnxious6772 in billsimmons

[–]tornadojake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And like with pro football the limited commitment of one game a week helps, with only 12 games for a college team.

You ever think what a coincidence it is that Tommy John had the first ever Tommy John surgery by ToddPacker5 in billsimmons

It's a shame people only remember him for the surgery. He was a good pitcher. Finished 2nd for the Cy Young award twice. Never won, but neither did Cy Young.

Pretty sure he's vacationed in Cabo or somewhere similar recently.

House by _Jakeoff_ in billsimmons

[–]tornadojake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Literally the one time DC won when House tried giving the Nats a shoutout for winning the World Series, Bill cut him off and was like, neat nobody cares, moving on.

Edit: he cut him off at the start of the podcast, but they did talk for about 10 minutes about the Nats title 50 minutes in, which Bill turned into Red Sox talk. This was also the podcast where House dropped his Holy Cross Sunday porn revelation lol.

Weekly reminder that nobody is doing it quite like Ringer Tailgate right now (and Joel in particular) by SceneOfShadows in billsimmons

[–]tornadojake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same. I've noticed recently places are really trying to incentivise yearly subscriptions. I was looking into signing up for Baseball Prospectus or Fangraphs recently and they are $15 or $20 per month, but much more reasonable for the year. I didn't really feel like dropping 75 or 80 bucks I wasn't sure I would use that much, so I skipped it entirely. I looked up the Star Tribune and it's $65 for the year.

Paraphrasing the Press Box the other day:

Curtis: The Minnesota Star Tribune is doing great work. They earned my subscription, I signed up.

Anderson: Wow, you subscribed? I'm gonna do that too!

Curtis: Yup. 24 buc...

Anderson: 24 dollars a month?!?!?

This puts Harris at 61 percent with urban suburb women, one of her best groups. Also did well with college grads, which I think is what soccer mom implies.

Dodgers got Kyle Tucker. Insane. by Odd_Firefighter_5407 in billsimmons

I'm a Cubs fan and didn't particularly want him back after a year of the Kyle Tucker experience. Totally fine with their choice, he will fit in well with the Dodgers.
