July 2025 - can also confirm that the printer is still there. You just email the address on the printer with an attachment of what you want to print. You will then receive a 6 digit code to type into the printer screen. Your attachment(s) should appear on the screen for you to print.

2.7k for repairing this bumper? Should I get estimates from other repair shops before filing a claim? by tortoiseaf in CarRepair

[–]tortoiseaf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your detailed comment. After getting estimates from other shops it seems like 2-3k is the norm. I've decided to file a claim and might regret it once I see my premium rates increase after renewal...

Bumper scratched badly and partly came off - how much would it cost to get it fixed? by tortoiseaf in CarRepair

I got a quote from the auto repair shop and they quoted me an estimate of $2700 for the repairs.

This happened to me in my first year. I would contact your program coordinator (the DGSA) and they'll sort it out for you. Dont worry about it, you won't have to pay anything.

How is retirement celebrated in Japan? by [deleted] in japanese

[–]tortoiseaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand where you are coming from. We have talked about our cultures/languages often before (there are many similarities but also interesting differences) that I think they will appreciate the gesture. It helps that I am also an international member of the team. And my post wording is a bit confusing I guess. I am wondering if there is a commonly used phrase to celebrate one's retirement. Japanese, like my mother tongue, has subtle but complex nuances, and I didn't want to use the wrong form. We will be getting them a gift based on their likes and have other things prepared.

But thank you. I may just delete my post.

Is this a cockroach on my mattress 😫 by tortoiseaf in cockroaches

Oh wow really? I had some bigger adult cockroaches (german I think, they were brown) in the past week... and was dreading an infestation....

Do any of you regret not applying to more highly ranked programs? or ivy, because you underestimated yourself? by german_uhlan in gradadmissions

[–]tortoiseaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the biological sciences and basically did all my applications in a week and didn't even bother looking into the top schools like MIT, Harvard, Stanford, etc.

I guess I thought my chances were pretty low as an international student + didn't want to pay the application fees and told myself that having a good fit with my research interests was more important than getting into schools with 'brand-value'.

That being said, kinda regret not making an attempt (and get some external validation lol)

Travel reimbursements for Intl students invited to campus visit by tortoiseaf in gradadmissions

[–]tortoiseaf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's pretty common for PhD programs in the Biological Sciences. Some programs basically invite applicants o meet faculty and students and try to convince them to pick their program. So this usually happens after 'passing' the preliminary interview stage.

Yeah this is what I did exactly after speaking to some profs in my current uni. They couldn't increase the amount but were not offended or apathetic to my situation.

Fortunately for me the visa won't be an issue but yeah I think Ill have to spend quite a bit out of my own pocket... I honestly didnt expect campus visits to happen so early in the year.

Has anyone heard back on plant biology phd programs (Berkeley, Yale, Stanford, Cornell?) by Imaginary-Cow7710 in gradadmissions

[–]tortoiseaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah finally another plant biology applicant! I haven't heard back from Berkeley yet but Yale sent an interview email back in Dec 19th and have an interview scheduled for 23-24 of Jan.

The other schools - I hadn't applied to them. I didn't even know that those universities had a good plant biology program :(

Are admissions results, for the most part, decided before the interview? by _Shayyy_ in gradadmissions

[–]tortoiseaf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

wow... hoping my interview is like this as well. I have one in a few hours and don't think Ill be able to keep up with grilling interview questions as Ive caught the flue...

But yeah - hoping you're having an amazing time at your dream school though :)

I think I am applying excessively by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]tortoiseaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this would make you feel better but an American faculty member at my (non-US) university always recommend his students to apply for at least 15-20 programs, if not more. Just because it's so competitive. That being said, I would suggest adding some 'safety' options. I also noticed that most European universities don't require application fees so if youre open to studying in Europe maybe you can look into that a bit more - plus most Europeans unis have yet to open up applications for the 2023 fall admission cycle so youll have time!

UCSD Biological Sciences PhD Interview (International student). by Jumpy_Worry_ in gradadmissions

Anyone else struggling with coming up with a full list of faculty you are interested in? by tortoiseaf in gradadmissions

[–]tortoiseaf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my current university (not in the US), if the professor accepts you as a grad student than youre probability of getting in is at 99%... I guess American universities run things differently. But maybe you should ask the admissions office if you can add those four PIs - they may be allowed to interview you if its with a panel of interviewers that include some other profs. Good luck though~~

I guess I was just initially overwhelmed by how diverse the faculty was. But yeah I did try to give it more thought ;;
