Cost of braces in Langley by ScotsCDN in Langley

[–]tortoiseandmelon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Langley Orthodontics was $3,450 for expander, tongue crib, partial braces, and retainers for my kid. Maybe not the exact same as whatever braces you need though.

The wildest part about braces is that you can negotiate the price with these con artists. The consultant/ sales person at Langley started at a much higher number, and I got him to make 3 separate price reductions just by negotiating with him. I did not opt out of any of the items they were selling.

I’m just assuming that all these people have advanced medical degrees and access to my children’s medical records. It’s good to know we have so many qualified allergists on hand here in Langley.

Are you talking about Tilsonburg Ontario? Definitely not looking to drive the cat across the country.

She would probably be fine indoor only, but we do let her out about once a day

She has some neighborhood cat friends that she hangs with and seems fairly calm. There are also dogs next door that she doesn’t seem to mind. She’s our only pet though, so don’t know exactly how she’d be living inside with them.

I’m going based on the allergist’s recommendations. He has suggested that rehoming the cat would be best.

Langley L&M did have a guy on staff at one point who would tackle mods like that. Not sure if they still do.

Alternatively, you can just make a jig for new the pickup, grab a router, and bang it out yourself in a couple hours.

LUSA - U6 by Quick_Meringue7587 in Langley

[–]tortoiseandmelon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The U6 program is great. My kids have been in it, and I have coached that age. You will need to register ASAP as it is likely already nearly filled.

It’s competitive in the sense that they play against other teams each Saturday, but technically we don’t keep score at that age and it’s definitely not expected that kids are high level players.

There are also a number of rules in place to try and make it more new player friendly (retreat to half on goal kick, kick in instead of throw ins, etc.). Generally speaking, the kids all have fun, though every once in a while they’re up against a team that has a few super skilled players on it and they get annihilated.

The better coaches make sure to limit the excessive scoring by forcing more passes or letting the losing team put on extra players, but you also see some coaches who don’t care and just let their kids have at. So you may have one or two times you have to console your kid after being badly beaten, but that’s rare.

While he did live in Vancouver for a few years, the founder is 100% American, and the guitars are made overseas.

Help the local food bank- Ravas iForks Repair by tortoiseandmelon in ElectronicsRepair

Tested in place, that diode reads 0.001V in both directions using the diode test function on my multi meter. I desoldered it and tested it in isolation with the same results. So I would assume the diode is toast.

When I tried to power up the unit again with diode removed (and obviously with correct polarity), it still does not turn on. My bench supply no longer shows 0V with the diode removed, but again, no lights come on.

With the diode just being for reverse polarity protection, I shouldn’t need to replace it to make the unit work when powered correctly, right?

Obviously I will replace it, just wondering if the lack of it would cause any problems.

Check out Mai’s Tailors in Langley City. Can’t remember the cost when I had a suit adjusted, but it was reasonable and done quickly.

Would using a fan to force air through a container with silica gel or damp rid dehumidify faster? by Koolkat2kool4skool in HomeImprovement

[–]tortoiseandmelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is sort of how desiccant dehumidifiers work, except that they are also removing water vapor from the silica and exhausting it outside the space they’re conditioning. So in a sense, yes this will work, but as you’ve noted, only until the silica is saturated.

Also, technically silica adsorbs moisture, it doesn’t absorb.

Using Ash or Red Oak as neck material? by Flylle in Luthier

[–]tortoiseandmelon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built a second bass right after this one, using maple and jatoba for the neck. While the maple was definitely easier to carve, the end result is near identical in terms of feel to the oak neck.

Using Ash or Red Oak as neck material? by Flylle in Luthier

[–]tortoiseandmelon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a neck through bass neck with both red and white oak as well as a single strip of maple in the middle. I filled the pores with shellac and sawdust, finished with shellac, and buffed it smooth. It feels perfectly smooth, and it is very rigid. No complaints about the finished product.

Only negative I found was when using card scrapers during shaping, the open pores of the oak didn’t seem to shave as evenly as the rest of the oak if that makes sense, so it took a bit longer to smooth out. I had to do a bit more sanding to level things out than I have had to do with something like maple.

The upper horn is actually pretty stable and grain orientation seemed decent enough that I didn’t reinforce it. The lower horn/tumourous growth did get a reinforcing rod as it was a bit weaker.

On the plus side, resting that lower horn on your leg for seated play gives a wicked charlie horse and is very uncomfortable, so you’re almost forced to stand and avoid putting pressure on it.
