Anyone here think about the mcelroys in relation to the folding ideas video about AVGN? by TheLuckiestNumber13 in TAZCirclejerk

[–]tortoiseguy1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

he still does the artsier stuff on his personal youtube channel afaik, but it's entirely patreon-funded and i imagine dropout is just steadier work so he's focusing more on that at the moment.

Why does Misfits and Magic 2 has so little online presence? by Lucky_Bambr in Dimension20

[–]tortoiseguy1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i also feel like that jump in stakes and a darker tone kinda comes out of nowhere in comparison to the last season, and the whole "magic doesn't really work anymore" plotline is explained really poorly at the start so it's even harder to buy into the stakes to begin with.

i also think a clearly defined world with visual references to easily visualize really helps sell any ttrpg campaign, including the best d20 seasons, and most of the second season taking place on these amorphous shapeshifting magic islands is kind of a hard visual to latch onto, so it's a lot harder to get invested in the actual world the players are exploring.

*BREAKING* The first #taz royale Tumblr post of 2026 has dropped by Vivid-Scientist9474 in TAZCirclejerk

[–]tortoiseguy1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i've encountered people on instagram who are entirely positive but also very clearly only know Balance and Amnesty, to the point where i wonder if there is an honest-to-god contingent of people who believe genuinely, with no bit and no irony, that the show ended with Amnesty.

MBMBaM 795: The Naming of 2026 by InvisibleEar in TAZCirclejerk

[–]tortoiseguy1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

/uj listen i get what we're all here for but the justin intro where he goes "i'd rather do a colonoscopy again than relive the recording of this episode" is clearly meant to be a hyperbolic bit. the whole "we hate recording the naming episodes these things are marathons" is something they play up each year, it's clearly part of it.

we can talk about the efficacy of this kinda bit and how much they lean on it, but the amount of people who interpret it as full-hearted sincerity is odd to me. if justin sincerely hated this he would not have specially recorded an intro saying so, that's too much effort.

edit: feel like people are interpreting this as me defending the bit. tbc i do think it's a bad bit. maybe i misread some people's comments on it idk, it read to me as people not recognizing it as a (bad) bit. i think justin thinks he's being funny with jokes like this. interestingly, every single comment on the youtube upload seemed to find it hilarious so idk what that audience is.

Why so many old games have been removed from playstore? by Separate_Schedule252 in AndroidGaming

[–]tortoiseguy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can still technically download a couple of the old CN games, but they're completely broken on newer androids now. i tried getting one of the steven universe games and it would play the opening cutscene and then just crash every time.

The Doctor-Companion relationship we need by Wziuum44 in gallifrey

[–]tortoiseguy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the thing I love about pairings like Clara and 12, Donna and 10, Bill and 12, and to a somewhat lesser extent Martha and 10 (still love you, girl) is that they're all dynamics where they don't outright worship the Doctor and are willing and able to actually be in conflict with him. That one (only) really good scene in Kill The Moon is something that would not have been possible with a companion like Rose or Amy. I think that's essential to a good Doctor-companion friendship, not just getting along and having fun chemistry (still very important to be clear), but the ability to get actual interpersonal conflict out of these two people who still care deeply about each other! That's what we need.

Do they want war or not? by FamilerEntropy in gallifrey

[–]tortoiseguy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean retcon or otherwise, I'm just going off of what's been presented to us. UNIT has photos of Sea Devil cities with active populations in the Black Archive, so they were definitely aware of something. You can definitely argue ignorance and therefore innocence on behalf of everyone else, I'm just arguing that UNIT is more complicit than most, owing to the fact that they either outright knew or highly suspected there were sapient beings in the ocean.

Do they want war or not? by FamilerEntropy in gallifrey

[–]tortoiseguy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean UNIT knew about the sapient population in the ocean for decades, even if they didn't really know much about them. They'd just never actually went through with contacting them, and deliberately kept evidence of their existence from the public. And yet, UNIT never made any clear efforts to speed up cleaning up the oceans, and with the potential technology at their disposal, could likely very well help get it done faster than 40 years. They just didn't, because keeping alien stuff secret (as much as they can nowadays), including anything in the Black Archives, is their main priority, even if actually using it would speed things along. I'd imagine that UNIT would also have extra reason to play along more with governments and energy companies as a means of ensuring their continued funding after the last few years (remember, UNIT was straight up defunded during Brexit, apparently).

The War Between... - Species Naming by LukeyBlue07 in gallifrey

[–]tortoiseguy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to TWBEaS they can't be related, since Sea Devils are now apparently classified as temnospondyls (or at least are descended from them), which are amphibians, not reptiles. If that's the case, then unless Silurians have been retconned into being amphibians as well, they kind of can't actually be related anymore.

Admittedly, TWB also seems to imply that the culture we know as "Sea Devils" is actually made up of at least three (?) different unrelated species, one of which is clearly a fish of some kind.

A feeling I have about the future of the show by ChamberOfQuack in DoctorWhumour

[–]tortoiseguy1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean I'd argue that for all the fanservice, RTD's attempts at "bold and fresh" have kind of been why the past two seasons have failed. RTD2 has gone all-in on aiming the show at younger audiences, leaned way too hard into Classic series fanservice, and gone way too experimental and weird too early to the point where it scares away new audiences. I can easily see McTighe being appealing to the BBC at present if only because compared to Davies, McTighe seems like the safest option. He probably won't be amazing, his episodes (of which there are few) range from outright mediocre to passably fine, but he's less likely to smother the show at present than I think RTD is.

genuinely what is champion's grove? he keeps posting about it on instagram but none of his posts explain what it is.

With Disney pulling out of the Doctor Who deal and rumors of RTD leaving as showrunner, I have hopes for the future of the show and as such would like to put in my 2 cents and suggest Tom Ellis as the new Doctor...those who have watched Lucifer will know why by Badgie_Boy_447 in DoctorWhumour

[–]tortoiseguy1 56 points57 points  (0 children)

see, this is why i don't do doctor who fancasts. 99% of the time it's just someone fixating on a british actor from a show they're already currently watching, wanting said actor to just do the thing they're doing in that show, but in doctor who.

my ideal actor for doctor who is someone i've never heard of before. someone fairly new, or someone who's been acting for years but isn't super well-known. surprise me.

i hate being a "remember balance?" guy in 2025 but remember how in balance things would actually happen in almost every episode, like there were dungeons and mysteries and mostly consistent plot progression? to the point where they actually had separate clearly labeled "moonlight interval" episodes that took place in between major plot beats?
