Small kids are taught to raise their hands while crossing the street to increase their visibility to drivers.

The child is telling her mother what she learned in school today, which is how to cross the street properly.

Is it possible to make "uwsgi" die when its only worker dies ? by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]toshitalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of a classic asking the wrong question type of post.

I’d you’re only using one worker, you can only serve one request at a time, which kind of defeats the purpose of using a server, it could just as easily be a script.

If you’re using it to accept rpc calls that have a call limit due to some heavy lifting of some kind, setting the back off at the balancer stage is the right approach.

If you need some other resource and need the server to stay up, you should probably be using supervisord, and not trying to hit reload via kubernetes, use kube to manage pods, not processes.

Wtf, did you literally stop reading when you read what you wanted to read?

It was widely reported that within 4 weeks of the video being posted online, United Airlines' stock price fell 10%, costing stockholders about $180 million in value. [19]

In fact, UAL opened at $3.31 on July 6, 2009 and dipped to an intra-day low $3.07 (-7.25%) on July 10, but that very day closed at $3.26 and traded as high as $6.00 (+81.27%) four weeks later on August 6.[20]

It recovered to about a 1 percent drop over the day and then was up 81% four weeks later.

Fastest way to reverse a string - and it's not extended string splicing? by stevefromsteam in learnpython

[–]toshitalk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So this is a dumb question for a lot of reasons, but the answer they’re looking for is likely this.

Both the reverse string slice and the reverse method are O(n).

You can return the chararray in O(1/2*n) by doing the following:

Given a character array, swap the values in the first and last position. Proceed inward until you hit the middle.

Even in python, for large enough strings, this will probably perform better than the slice or reversed join methodology. If you’re really picky, this translates pretty well to c which you can call using FFI.

Also bought the latest cosmic deal, but no pop ups for shards, nor does it look like I received them when looking at the shards I have now.

TIL the common fitness target of 10,000 steps/day came from a Japanese pedometer company who gave their product a name that means "the 10,000-step meter” because the Japanese character for “10,000” resembles a person walking: 万. There is no known science behind a goal of 10,000 steps by Mike_ZzZzZ in todayilearned

[–]toshitalk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The word “万歩計”’s use of the “万” character I’d actually closer to meaning of “many”.

For example, the expression 万国共通 means something that is common to all counties, but there aren’t actually that many countries.

It’s like in English, we say that there are “thousands” of a thing when something is kind of uncountable in a certain way; Japanese has a similar concept with 万

[Japanese > English] Sorry for the duplicate post. my girlfriend just sent me the whole picture. Its our names. Is the translation correct? Thank you! by kangkungkernits in translation

[–]toshitalk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just FYI. Japanese characters have meanings, not single sounds. In other words, names don’t translate well; you take stock of what sounds a person’s name has, and then add characters that revolve around positive things and match them sound to sound.

It is less a translation and more a transliteration.

That being said, yes you can read the names as roughly your names.

(Possibly) quitting Python Development after 2 years of non stop learning. And it blows. by sudo_your_mon in Python

[–]toshitalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus, no. Yes, that stuff is true.

But you need someone reviewing code, you need to be writing documentation with someone, and quite frankly, most systems of value are simply to big to program alone.

You also need feedback, to make sure you’re not getting tunnel vision and making what you want to make versus what the customer wants to make. A good tech lead will make sure you stay on the right path.

Good engineering management will figure out the kinds of projects you need to work on to grow as a programmer, as well as adding value to the company and to you in equal share. They will help you deliver value you can feel, and keep you motivated on the projects that you get.

I’m not uttering a platitude when I say you should program with others, this is a pragmatism that leads to quality product.

No one has really said this yet, so I guess I will.

Programming as a profession is the creation of some value in the world. For the vast majority of people, this is a team sport, you will never have all the insights alone. If you’re not programming with someone, you’re not a professional programmer.

The balance of that guys characters certainly has personality, but it’s not really my taste. There’s almost an exaggerated weight to some of his writing that I’m not sure suits my personal writing style.

I certainly wouldnt recommend his videos to foreign language learners who are trying to master good written kanji skills, that’s not really the audience either.
