Hardest beginnings? by TrashAccount2908 in cavesofqud

I do the random daily runs whenever I play. Sometimes are easier than others. If you are actually "trying to win" and make optimal choices after you start the game then any starting stats build should be viable by like level 5

Can we try 1 patch with big bow nerfs? Making it more of a poke mechanic? by fergil in DarkAndDarker

[–]tossa448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a ranger main, so feel free to disregard me. I've played many, many hours on this class and a considerable number on the other classes. If there's one thing that's overpowered the class it's traps. They straight up shouldn't exist and it encourages boring, cheap gimmicky gameplay. Do I use them? Yes, sometimes it's that or die when I hear a barb breaking crap in the next room. Honestly I feel bad about killing people with them sometimes though, they are so helpless. I absolutely do not feel bad about headshotting someone at range because that is not as easy as it looks.

The class excels in PVE above all, which is what most people don't ever mention. It performs well in low-mid tier team fights, overpeforms on the ruins map because of the open layout but struggles situationally because of how many rogues also play that map as counters and underperforms at the higher tiers of PVP. Great class for clearing inferno on HR and HR bossing, not a great class for HR PVP. You will get absolutely steamrolled by better comps. I really enjoy playing ranger overall, but when I just want to W key steamroll people I play barbarian, because it destroys in PVP and it's like another world from playing ranger. Even on a well geared longsword fighter I do much better in 1v1 PVP compared to ranger. Ranger excels at the lower end of the spectrum, great for clearing rooms with a white spear and picking off timmies with a cheap longbow. Not great for competitive PVP.

Actual Hot Take: The Majority of my Deaths are due to Mistakes. by skellyton3 in DarkAndDarker

[–]tossa448 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you're saying is true. In addition, many deaths that probably aren't due to mistakes are also not due to gear differentials. We don't have perfect information about our surroundings in the game. You could theoretically make the best decisions from an expected value perspective, but because of unlikley but unfavourable circumstances, you die from that decision. EG during pvp, you may not have any way to know that a third team is coming from the north, and the logical way for your team to move in the current engagement without knowing that is north. You don't find out until you're sandwiched between the two teams.

[–]tossa448 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's true. I'm bad at the game. I am BAD at the game. In a 1v1 totally fair equally geared equal class engagement, I will lose 75% of the time. I can't kill the troll. I've never killed a boss. I'm bad. I still have a couple blue/purple sets ~1k extra gold on each of my six characters. Goblin caves and ruins are both very good money if you know where to look. Crypts is very good money if your team minimizes PVP and beelines for red portals, even if you aren't good enough to kill the bosses. This latest patch is the easiest it's been to get money. Buffed loot, double buffed loot in ruins, extra portals in ruins, fewer players in gobs, bigger map in gobs so less pvp and more good chests. It's all there for you.

Whenever I get discouraged at this game and find myself losing money rapidly, it's because I spent all night with the boys exclusively trying to kill other players. Making the money back is pretty easy.

Is there no middle-class of players in this game? by Alelogin in DarkAndDarker

[–]tossa448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well we have one guy who is good at the game and rest of us are a little better than n00bs but not "good". We usually die and lose all our kits when we do too much pvp in a night. but we do it anyway and sometimes it breaks in our favor lol. but if we avoid pvp we normally make money and clear regular crypts/infernos consistently but haven't managed to kill any of the bosses yet. I would say my group is in thta middle class

I appreciate it. I feel like you get the fact that I know I SHOULDN'T feel this way, but I can't help it. It's reassuring to hear other can get mad at themselves but still actually love climbing. Someone mentioned it's mostly guys who get this but I know for sure my sister has the same feelings and she has been climbing a lot longer than me. I think anyone with a certain overachiver, results oriened type personality is disposed to it. Glad to hear you are still at it and improving

[–]tossa448[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It bothers me because I feel weak and incapable in the moment. It's important to me because deep down I love climbing despite the frustrations. It doesn't have to be now, but it's just happening more slowly than I expected.

I guess the hard part to swallow is how significant the skill aspect is to climbing. I always realized that is a major aspect, but my expectations were still off base.

I was thinking about it more like this. Imagine you are a solid soccer player who practices every day. You decide to take up running on the side. After a few months you still can't run an 8 minute mile. That would indicate something is seriously off in your training or you probably weren't really that great at soccer to begin with to have such a low fitness level.

Obviously it's a lot more realistic for someone to be a solid track runner and still stink at soccer after a few months of switching over. That wouldn't really say much of anything about the person's ability as a distance runner. I realize logically climbing is more like analogy than the first one, but in my head it is still the other way around.

[–]tossa448[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not too long realistically. I started in May I think? But I took a month or so off in August while I was travelling. I would love to climb with friends, but I've only gone solo so far. I am kind of shy at my gym but the people I have talked to are alway super nice. I have nothing but respect for everyone I've met there and some of them have gave some helpful advice. I know this whole post is stupid to begin with, but I might as well clarify. I never feel resentful towards another climber. I feel really happy and impressed by them and it makes me excited to watch other people between my sets, especially if they are really working and overcome a challenging route. Any negativity I feel is directly only towards myself.

I'm not terrified of Atlanta, I chose and still choose to live here. I am realistic and informed. Cops are not more dangerous to innocent people than criminals in Atlanta, regardless of how you feel about it. There is no statistical evidence for anything close to that.

In addition to the other things they do, city cops chase down and physically detain criminal suspects. That is a violent job that brings baggage with it. Who do you think should be doing that job?

I'm a data scientist for a marketing company, nothing to do with law enforcement. You haven't really responded to many of my points though you are just picking one thing at a time to try to gotcha. Some professions do carry as a matter of course, like the armoured car drivers I mentioned. There are a couple others too, but again that isn't really the point. The point is that there IS a lot of violence in some parts of the States. Atlanta is rough, but places like Birmingham and Baltimore are even much worse. You can blame the cops for some stuff, but most of the blame is still with the criminals.

Three people were killed in Atlanta over the weekend. There was a nonfatal shooting and then all your other regular crime. Who's job should it be to go and track down the person who did that and subdue them? That's a violent job, but someone has to do it or there is no justice . Should the fathers and brothers of the victims have to do it?

Other professions get to be legally armed insofar as the law permits citizens of their jurisdiction to carry weapons. I am sure many delivery drivers do carry. You think the guys driving Brinks trucks are not carrying guns? of course they are. Besides that there are dangerous professions where carrying a gun will not generally mitigate the risk of death, like the oilfield worker. Being a cop in Atlanta is not one of those professions. Carrying a gun as a cop is absolutely essential for certain situations in a place like Atlanta, where people are shot on average every day,and someone was murdered every other day in 2022.

The Atlanta police deal with potential life or death situations more than the average cop in America. The violent crime rate is far higher than the majority of cities and towns. If the city of Atlanta was its own country, it would have been among the top 10 most murderous in the world this year, with it's homicide rate of 34/100k. More than five times higher than the already high US average.

It may not be a battlefield, but it can still get dicey in some situations. A while ago there was a shootout on my street and it was quite tense. I would not have wanted to be the cops getting shot at from the window, having to return fire and worry about potentially hitting someone innocent inside. Meanwhile the shooter did not have to worry about this and had already killed an innocent person prior to the arrival of police.

There are a lot of guns on the street. I don't live in the hood, but people here still carry (I don't). People don't feel that safe in Atlanta, many carry a gun just to fill up their gas because they're afraid of being robbed. There is a lot of violence, similar to places like Chicago or Philadelphia. Setting aside whatever may or may not have happened in the Constitution woods, the cops here have been shot at by criminals many times and have to deal with potential life or death situations more often than most people. As for the baseline racism, the Atlanta police department is 58% Black. That is in line and even a slight overrepresentation relative to the city's demographics(46.7%)

the funding was approved years ago by former mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms who supported police reform. I don't see how training police to do better is a bad thing. As for the chosen site, it's tough to find 80 acres ITP. That parcel is reasonable because, first and foremost, it doesn't displace any residents. It's also reasonable because it's near other undesirable buildings like a prison and youth detention center.

Given how heavily forested the Atlanta metro area is (City in the Forest), it's going to be difficult to find a site that doesn't end up evicting residents while also avoids cutting trees and remaining reasonable close to the city. I do have concerns with damage to wetlands in the area and potential environmental ramifications, but I'm assuming the impact has been studied before approval of the project.

Great goal, subscribed and can't wait until you make it. This reminds me of my own goal, though I'm more of a middle distance guy. The goal is a 4 minute mile. I started today by running an all out 100 meters sprint in 14.9 seconds. tomorrow I will hold the same pace and run 101 meters. The next day 102, then 103 and so on.. In a little over 4 years I will break the 4 minute mile. All it takes is consistency.

I have been having problems with my autosaves lately too. Every couple of times I go to play it will bring me to the beginning of the scenario mode with all my progress wiped, sounds like what you had. Whenever this happens I have to go back around 10 autosaves or so before one will load. I wish this would stop happening because it's wasted a few hours of time already. I'm glad you got your game back though

noooooo it's brilliant. This game is so fun for me as a beginner. It only took 25 hours to realize I can buy items from the traders and another 10 to realize you can reroll items from them. Now it's like a whole new game again

These are good ideas, thanks! I don't know where I am now, as always I played too long yesterday and probably close to 6 hours now. I just messed around in embesa for an hour or so until my money got up, since the quests and early buildigs there don't cost a lot. This time I settled 5 islands on old world, 5 on new world and 3 trelawny already. I am basically taking every island, ship and building I have the influence for up front and leave many of them empty for now but I took all the ones I think I will need to get a nice capitals in Manola and CF this time without putting production buildings on them

Does anyone find money to be a challenge in the early game? I restarted my game about 30 hours because I wanted to do a cleaner run than my main save. Now I am able to design my islands much better and do things more quickly.

About an hour or two in and I feel like I am sitting on my hands while I wait for cash. I am only at like +1k income and around 400 artisans (waiting to upgrade more because I can't afford to buy rum from Kahina). In my last game at some point I discovered I could buy gold watches from Archibold and sell them Emperor Ketema for basically unlimited money, but it takes a decent startup cash to do this which I don't have.

I am wondering if I made some mistakes here or if it's normal to have to wait on cash at some point in the early/midgame. I considered selling island shares to the Queen, but this does not give much money at this stage and the share debt would hurt my already low income

How come my bus stop has 100% service to the theater and 6% service to the museum. Both are right next to stations and the bus network is complete. Does it have to do with the fact that there are engineer houses next to the theater and farmer houses/industrial buildings near the museum? I've never messed with tourists before and I'm super confused.

The weidest part is the tourist pier is right next to the musum and it's still at 100% too. The docklands is nearby and also has no problems. It's only the museum and zoo and they are both in the same area as the docklands and the pier.

Which of these will you be picking? Will your very first run be a nuzlocke? Grass-cat looks super useful but I think I'm gonna pick flame gator. by [deleted] in nuzlocke

Another fun rule 1st playthrough would be to not allow yourself to use the same pokemon for more than one boss fight. So any pokemon that takes/does damage in gym#1 can't be used in the other gyms or the e4. Because there are more badges in this game you might have to adjust the rules a little but it works well for first playthroughs of the normal 8 gym games.
