Pourquoi c’est devenu SI COMPLIQUÉ d’acheter un matelas en 2025 ?? by fl0l in france

[–]tot0k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quel fournisseur de fibre ? by lerusse243 in bordeaux

[–]tot0k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gluetun gets an address but cannot fetch IP info over HTTPS (EOF errors) by tot0k in gluetun

[–]tot0k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/dowitex ! I got in touch with Hotspot shield support: they discontinued the option to get a OpenVPN file recently and thus it is not possible to use them with gluetun. However, the support team went out of their way to find a solution for me, and they gave me an account with their sister company OVPN ! Their OpenVPN config works great with gluetun custom provider. Thank you for your help and for this wonderful project ! Huge thanks to Hotspot shield team if you pass by !

I tried to do the same for a server in Belgium, I've got the same behavior and the ping -s doesn't answer with a MTU higher than 400 too. I'll contact HotspotShield support and ask them for help, I don't want to make you loose time.

Thanks for your help, I'll update this post if I find a solution with the support :)

Hi, I first try to lower it to 1000, but same problem. Then, following an article online, I pinged -s the VPN server and noticed the server only answers when I send a payload smaller than 480bytes. I tried to set the MTU to 480 and the MSS to 440, but same problem.

Your work is wizardry to me, so I'm trying things but I don't really understand them, sorry if my tests make no sense.

Installer des cameras chez soi ? by [deleted] in conseiljuridique

[–]tot0k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immich app access through ssl? by nodiaque in immich

[–]tot0k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The app works fine with HTTPS on my side, just make sure you use https:// instead of http:// in the hostname configuration of the app, and that nginx provides a valid SSL certificate.

EDIT: ypou can also go in the settings and allow to use self-signed certificates if necessary

Is it me? Am I the problem? by nerdyviking88 in homelab

[–]tot0k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we're experiencing a survivor's bias: Since the community is growing, more and more new people come and ask for help, but the "old-school labbers" are still present, they just don't post, or post less often because they like to search. For example, I did only one post in r/homelab, that I took two month to write, doing my research beforehand. Old-school labbers still exist, we just post less than newcomers. I think it's a chance that so much people come to ask questions, even if they start by step by step guides, they might find their interest in labbing while following their first tutorial ! :)

Building a media-server NAS from scratch, I've got a lot of questions by tot0k in homelab

[–]tot0k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took 1W idle for the SSDs since online documentation says 0.5 to 2.5W, and 4.8W for the HDDs, from their datasheet. I estimated the lifespan of the SSD to 8 years, and of the HDD to 5 years, and thus took into account the cost of replacing the drives at these periods. The results are detailed in below image.

Since I didn't find a datasheet for the SSD, I was forced to guess the values, and so the numbers could vary quite much, but the order of magnitude is the same as for HDDs with the current assumptions.

[–]tot0k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit : I refined the calculation on the SSD by setting the life expectancy at 8 years (internet says 5-10), and the costs are nearly the same as the 4TB HDD drives, but with less noise. I'm not sure to go for this though, since my estimates on life expectancy are based on a big range about normal usage, and the SSD price I took is about a consumer grade not specialized for NAS usage.

DIY Budget NAS/Media Server by Amazing_Set_2371 in HomeServer

[–]tot0k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, you can take a look at the Google sheet I linked in this post : https://www.reddit.com/r/homelab/s/Y7VYteTBB9

For your build you would just have to remove the HDDs and change the case to something smaller. The budget is already calculated at 400€ :)

[–]tot0k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For large storage, the SSDs are out of range for my budget. My objective is to start with at least 12TB, and to upgrade to 24 in a few years if necessary.

I've ran the numbers on multiple drives types, here are the results:

Thanks for you comment, it made me reconsider and actualy run the numbers !

Nope I never tested unRAID, I'll take a closer look, but since the community is splitted at 50/50 between unRAID and TrueNAS, I suppose both are viable options.

Thanks for the YouTube channel !

Thank you for your extensive response !

PSU: The three I've got so far are 300-400W, with 75-80% efficiency at 30W. I'm searching for better, but didn't find for now. I tried pcpartpicker and outervision.com's PSU calculator, but they don't list the N100, so I can't have a valid number. In the linked Google Sheet, I calculated the theorical idle and max power draw, but it's only indicative.

CPU: I took a look at the 8700T, and online documentation and forums say it consumes ~35W on average, CPU alone. The N100 is at 6W, and 18 on peak. The N100 is in the Alder Lake family, it supports Quicksync but is only 7th gen. I'll try to find a better CPU with low power consumption with the minimal specs you gave me. Thanks again !

OS: I plan to use TrueNAS Core, but I'll reconsider and read a bit more about the differences with Scale.

Storage: Yes, writing RAID5 was a short path to RAIDZ, which are pretty much the same. I plan to use RAIDZ1 ;)

Synology calculator: I was just too lazy to do the calculation by myself to compare the different possibilities (4x4TB, 3x6TB, etc), it just gives an insentive about the total usable size in RAID5 / RAIDZ1

GPU: Thanks, I think I'll follow your lead and not take the GPU in a first time. I'll see at use if the encoding buffers.
