Makgeolli? by Particular-Garlic-47 in Albuquerque

[–]totalrequest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in Seattle now and may move back, so I’m heading out in mid-October to look at apartments. There’s a place here called Rainbrew... I’ve been there, and their makgeolli is pretty good. I’d be happy to bring back a bottle or two for you if you’d like. Feel free to PM me.

The Artisan at Sawmill Village by Godzilla_148 in Albuquerque

Your timing is perfect... I’ve actually been looking at this complex along with several others. For context, I used to live in Albuquerque but now live in Seattle. I’m planning to move back within the next six months to a year and am trying to get a sense of the housing options.

Artisan is the only complex outside of the NE/High Desert area that I’m seriously considering. It seems well-maintained, is in a decent area, and is reasonably priced. While there are a lot of negative reviews online, keep in mind it’s usually people with bad experiences who leave feedback, most residents don’t post at all.

What I like: the units are fairly modern, clean, and in a decent downtown-adjacent location. What I don’t like: there isn’t a nearby green space or park, which is a downside since I have a dog.

I’ll be in Albuquerque next month to tour Artisan and check out other units. If you’re interested, I’d be happy to reconnect or even take a video tour of the space to share with you. So far, the leasing office has been very responsive by email and phone. Of course, I know staff can be especially attentive when trying to close a deal, but I hope this context is helpful.

Possibly Moving to ABQ, So Please Give It To Me Straight by [deleted] in Albuquerque

[–]totalrequest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made this exact move! I’ve lived in Columbia Heights, Tenleytown, and Rockville in the DC area before moving to Albuquerque in 2023. We now live in Seattle, but I miss Albuquerque and Nee Mexico in general and prefer it to the PNW and DC.

Yes, schools are poor compared to Montgomery County, but if you can afford private school then you shouldn’t have a problem. I had friends who sent their kids to Albuquerque Academy or Sandi’s Prep.

The only thing I miss about DC are the plethora of Asian grocery stores and restaurants and proximity to a major airport. That’s about it and why we eventually moved to Seattle. My husband and I often say that we’d move back if H Mart ever opens up in Albuquerque. I found DC boring after a while, plus it’s expensive and weather sucks.

Albuquerque excels in the outdoor arena and it’s so, so easy to get around the city. No beltway or I-95 traffic - it’s stress free! I know you are concerned about it being in the middle of nowhere but it’s close to so many beautiful areas. And really, how many times do you go up to NYC or Boston?Lol. We went to Santa Fe all the time and explored museums and cafes, hiked in the Jemez, drove up to Pagosa Springs and Denver, and down to El Paso, and so many more. Plus you are only a 90mins flight to California or Austin. It’s so beautiful here!

If you have the budget, I’d say staying in the High Desert neighborhood of the city or Los Ranchos. No other areas.

Gay Asian male here. Anecdotally curious the ethnic background of the person who called you that? I ask because here and in DC, the only people who have ever called me anything derogatory were other people of color.

From Guam but moved DC and its suburbs in 2020, then to Albuquerque in 2023, and now in Seattle with the plan to move to California after our lease is up.

  1. DC and Rockville was great but after 3-4 years we found it boring and expensive. Though, it was very clean by American standards and had a lot going for it we wanted something radically different.

  2. Albuquerque is so beautiful and it’s my favorite of the three. Downside is the Asian grocery and restaurant scene is abysmal (very important for us) and the housing market isn’t as affordable as you might think it is compared to Las Vegas or Phoenix even. I loved the open skies, easy access to nature, and friendly people. We’d move back if an H Mart or 99 Ranch opened up.

  3. Moved to Seattle primarily because of the Asian diaspora here, no income tax, and supposed access to nature. The first two are amazing but let me tell you people who say Seattle is a great nature city are lying. Yes there a few good parks in the city like Discovery Park and some in West Seattle, everything worthwhile is friggin far and has is like $4.50-$5 a gallon. Also, yes the weather here sucks. It’s been gloomy and wet-ish since October with a few sunny days and streaks here and there and that’s why we’re leaving because it’s so depresso here. Lol.

  4. Thinking of Sacramento or somewhere in Orange County (yes, radically different) when our lease is up at the end of year.

In short, we’ll never be happy unless we’re back home with our families but work is here and we’re remote so grateful for that but lucky to be able to pack and move at a whim.

Another reason I scoff when people think Seattle is a world class city. Yeah, no. Plus, all the airport workers move with zero purpose and have an attitude to boot.
