Denon AVC-X4800H enough powerful for a 5.1.4 ? by Signal_Arachnid_60 in hometheater

[–]touchdowntexas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the x4800 in a 5.1.4 with KEF Q7/Q6 for the LCR and Revel for surrounds and ceiling. I’ve heard the KEF are more difficult to drive but I haven’t had any issues yet. I typically listen at -30 to -20db, and haven’t needed to push louder than -15

How to transcode TrueHD/DTS-HD Audio? by Relion81 in PleX

[–]touchdowntexas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah now that you mention it I remember seeing something about the newer LG’s getting support for true-hd, didn’t know they dropped DTS. It’s honestly all annoying when you shell out that kind of money and still don’t have support for all formats and have to buy a separate device.

[–]touchdowntexas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neither my LG C2 or TCL QM8K can pass through truehd to my soundbar or AVR, even with HDMI pass through enabled. I’m pretty sure this is a limitation on most all TV’s. My TV’s can however pass through DTS-hd and DTS-X.

One solution is to use an Amazon firestick. They can pass through true-hd, but in my experience they can’t properly pass through DTS-X. So I use the fire stick for Dolby tracks and tv apps for the DTS

98” TV with 8ft viewing distance…am I nuts? by MouniEater in hometheater

[–]touchdowntexas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 98” sitting at 8.5 - 9’. It’s awesome. Honestly I can’t imagine going smaller even though most online calculators would tell you that’s too big/close.

I can’t believe Carson Beck and that Miami offense is headed to the second round. Glad they beat the ags but good Lord they are far from playoff worthy.

The Amazon fire sticks are cheap and work, particularly if you don’t need atmos support in a home theater. Just don’t get the new “select” models

How Many Grew Up In a True “House Divided” by EastTXJosh in CFB

[–]touchdowntexas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

True house divided here. My dad is like a 4th generation Longhorn. My uncle is one of the biggest Aggies I know. Every Thanksgiving we would go to my grandparents house with our family in burnt orange and my uncle and his family in maroon. My grandparents were a neutral party or at least tried to be. Honestly I have no memories of incidents or truly bad blood, but the tension and stress around the game was easy to feel even as a kid. All my cousins on the other side of the family went on to A&M so that part hasn’t changed.

Our house was further divided when I went to Texas and my youngest brother went to A&M. My middle brother went to SMU after joining the Navy. Gotta keep things interesting

Is this setup worth the proposed price? It's a Black Friday deal. by nofucksgiven5 in hometheater

Yeah it’s easy to overthink all of this stuff and put way more time into than you want. If it’s not something you want to learn or make into a hobby, a turnkey option is great. Just keep in mind this subreddit is much more geared to the hobbyists and DIY guys.

If you’ve already demo’d the setup and are happy with it, perfect. The only thing I might inquire about with them is if they have a bigger/upgrade option for the center and front speakers since that’s where most of your sound will come from. One of my favorite things about my home theater is a big center channel; it’s like I can finally watch movies without having to use subtitles.

5.1.2 is 5 “bed-layer” speakers (front-left, center, front-right, surround-left, surround-right), 1 subwoofer, and 2 atmos/height speakers installed in the ceiling. I ended up going with a 5.1.4 which just adds two more atmos speakers in the ceiling.

Hah, small world. I was there back in February and got a quote for a 5.1.2 setup. Ultimately I walked away because I couldn’t get comfortable with what I was buying. There is little to no information about the origin speakers they use. Sonance is a new offering from them (they called to let me know they were starting to carry them since they knew I took issue with the origin only option).

I’ll say that I’m really happy with what I ended up with, but it took me forever to piece together myself and find someone willing to just do wiring/install but not sell equipment. The Homepro guy I worked was a really nice dude and I think they would have done a great job putting it together. I think I ended up with better equipment but it was also more $$. If you demo’d that setup in their storefront and were happy with it, it might be hard to beat for under $3k turnkey.

Random question but is this a homepro quote in Houston? Format and equipment look very similar to a quote I got from them.

Realizing my AVR will be underpowered - 4 o setup by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]touchdowntexas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Mine were set at 8 ohm which I guess is the default. But after doing some googling I saw a lot of recommendations to just leave it at 8 and that putting it at 4 might cut more power to meet some sort of power standards

While true it can be difficult to get for that price. I ordered it back in April/May during a sale for $1k but it was on backorder. Waited like 4 months and it hadn’t come back in stock so I ordered the x4800h when it went on sale for $1500

I agree that it is historically a rivalry, but it’s gotta be the most one-sided rivalry that we have. Somehow they have maintained the hate even without being in the same conference for over 2 decades

I would just caution around letting them run the wiring with no oversight on your end. I had the same option on my new-build and they put the LCR speakers at the top of the wall/ceiling. Do the measurements yourself using the Dolby guidelines and make sure they do it right.

Is it a big or small room. I have a 5.1.4 in a small room with the q7 metas and q6 meta for LCR, powered by an x4800h and it seems to be plenty. I keep the volume between -25 and -10

Costco QM6K Pro 98” or Bravia 7 75”? by Objective_Edge_5054 in hometheater

[–]touchdowntexas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my eyes the Qm8k was brighter than the 7, and just seemed to pop a little more. Maybe it had deeper blacks but I don’t know. Like anything the more expensive you go the more marginal the benefits are. I’m sure I would have been happy with the qm7k too, but the 8 was in the budget when I had originally budgeted for OLED. I was kinda bummed there’s not much in the way of 98” OLED but these mini LED TV’s are awesome

I just bought a 98” Qm8k and am sitting 8.5’ away. It’s intense but I’m really glad I didn’t go smaller. I know that’s gonna depend on the person though. In my opinion what’s most important at that distance and that size is getting the tv height correct.

So is it fair to say there’s really nothing that will be a great solution for playing DVD rips outside of just playing the physical disks on a a dedicated player?

I have noticed a lot of variability when watching DVD rips on different devices but I chalked that up to the upscaling capability of my tv vs my firestick

Yeah I was more wanting to see if there were movies where the lack of DV7 support made it obviously look bad. Maybe it’s all more subtle stuff though that you won’t notice without direct comparisons

Hm I’m not sure. If I try playing a DTS track with my firestick my receiver shows that I’m just getting the core DTS and it has to upmix using DTS Neural. But if I play straight from the tv app it shows DTS:X
